[UPDATE] Sentinel - July 6 - Ocean tremors
Quote:
Tremor Recorded on Ocean Floor
By JEREMY CLARIDGE
Geologists at Perplex City University indicated that they recorded the strongest-ever tremor felt in the region last night at around 3:40 am. The epicentre of the quake was roughly 800 kilometres to the south-east of Perplex City, registering 509 Brigham-Horne units. "The tremor was just barely strong enough to be felt in the city itself," said University geologist Meredith Woolsy, "but we did experience some high waters as a result."
Woolsy further said that the shaking was mild enough that most city residents probably were not disturbed from their sleep. "If you were up and about, you perhaps lost a bit of balance," Woolsy said. According to the Office of the Council, no damage to city structures has been reported; Woolsy insists the likelihood of finding such damage is quite low.

Workers at the Portside Docks indicated that they did observe particularly rough waters during the early hours of the morning. Fortunately, the quake-related waves approached during low tide, so no unusual flooding appears to have resulted. "The city was lucky on a lot of counts," said Woolsy. As a result of the quake, one city resident, Johanna Lowell, 54, a gardener, lost her balance on her way back home from enjoying an evening out and suffered from a badly sprained ankle, as well as some other minor injuries. Even Lowell herself counts the damage as light. "It could have been the drink as much as the tremor," she joked. Lowell's was the only quake-related injury reported.
Geologists have long known that that area of the sea floor contains an elaborate network of faults, but it is rare for activity to register more than 180 Brigham-Horne units. This quake is the largest on record for the area, and the first tremor of any size to be recorded in the region since 262.
and Bear in Fivebridge
Quote:
This week, there have been several sightings of a large black bear in developed areas just outside of Fivebridge. The bear has so far attacked one pet dog, who is now in a veterinary hospital recovering from serious injuries, but no people have yet been approached or harmed. Wilderness experts are at a loss to explain why the bear has entered an inhabited area.
More deconstruction......literally and metaphysically?

This may all just be an unfortunate concatenation of events, but if not, it's going to be hard 'watching' Perplex City fall apart and its inhabitants die if we can't find the Cube quickly enough...
Just spec...

does anyone know much about the richter scale? "509 Brigham-Horne units" is probably pretty close to, what, 3.0?

/me starts doing calculations for distance out and how much of the tremor is felt, then realizes he has no idea what he's doing and waits for a seismologist to pipe up

i agree that this is all happening because of the cube- the mobius stip cracks, the ascendancy point problems, now this- as i said somewhere else, it's like the tower of london falling down if the ravens leave-
doubtless we'll see some high-profile deaths (scarlett perishing in an ascendancy point catastrophe?) before the cube is returned.

If I were the Perplexians, I wouldn't be about to sue us if the City is falling apart in the Cube's continued absence. I'd want to have a word with their liason, who have thus far managed to put the release date of the Cube Retrieval's Team work back *twice* in recent months
And I do wonder how the hell the City held together before the Cube arrived, if our hypothesis is correct. Yes, I get the idea that it was probably a mite unsophisticated, lawless, even in those days pre - Cube, what with the rugged silver miners, the rampaging bears, the reliance on astrology, and the drunken Academicians of the Old Town, but I'm not quite sure that's tantamount to saying that the entire social structure failed to hold together...
Unless of course the City *has* only existed since the Cube arrived, and it came complete with a population of non - people impregnated with memories of a past that hadn't actually ever been

Someone's tunnelling underground. Maybe a secret genus of pre-perplex city creatures who want their cube back. Their patient, but their plodding, and their angry. Soon, everything from PC to Gladstone will be underwater - except the cube, which doesn't like water.
