I'm also reminded of Norse legend, particularly the story about Thor being tricked into trying to drain a cup that contained the sea - see here for the full story.

So, we got Madna stealing apples like Hercules stealing a golden apple from nymph-type things in task #11, and slaying a bird demon, like his Earthly equivalent encounter with Stymphalian birds in #6.
As for outwitting tricksters, this could be the perplexian version of winning a battle, like Herculian tasks #1-4, #7 or #12 to name a few - they do favour intelegence over physique after all. The same could be said about filling the river, or could even be compared to other 'impossible' tasks like (#5) cleaning the stables of hundreds horses, etc.

That's a good point. Just to add to that, Hercules accomplished his task of cleaning the Augean stables by changing the course of a river so that it flowed right through the stables (somewhat similar to Madna's Mazy River task). Also, Hercules wrestled the giant Antaeus who gained his strength from the Earth. Hercules outwitted him by lifting him off the ground to deprive him of his power (like Madna's outwitting of Losik). I guess to make the similarities complete, you could liken Madna's first task to Theseus and the Labyrinth.

Well, indeed, these are pretty much the things ancient heroes and heroic gods go in for; there are plenty of parallels all over the place. In Greek myth alone, for instance, although Herakles was the only one with as many as 12 Tasks to get on with, there's lot of similar stuff - Theseus ,after all, had to navigate the labyrinth, kill the hideous Minotaur (maybe *he* just had some especially bad PR - eh?), and then get home safely without causing his anguished father to jump off a cliff, believing that he was dead (er...he didn't achieve that one actually...). And Jason had to do a fair bit of rescuing blind men from Harpies, and sowing dragon's teeth in fields while ploughing ridiculously lengthy bits of land (I'm not sure that they turned into animated skeletons in the original - that was Ray Harryhausen), and Perseus had to kill Medusa, resplendent in his magic boots and hat and with his mirror shield, before hooking up with a nice young lady who he'd rescued from a sea monster. And so on.

So what I say is, yes, it's good that Perplex City has someone who did a number of rather pointless things in the dawn days just in order to show those Perplexians that you can do anything if you set your mind to it. And I particularly like the idea of an apple - eating crocodile, because it appeals to my absurdist side.

I still say that there was never a better rendering of the heroic drive to compete seemingly 'impossible' tasks, however, than the bit in the '12 Tasks of Asterix' where that particular cartoon warrior had to undertake the task of getting a form filled out for him in an impenetrably buereaucratic hotel, which was just genius, and still is, as anyone who has had to go through customs at Chicago Airport will be able to appreciate.

haven't had time to delve into my myth library, but in my mind Losik = Loki.

Noh Tower

Quote:
Ascendancy Point is located in the commercial centre of Perplex City. Its main entrance is on Ascendancy Way which runs parallel to Fivebridges Lane. Constructed in 259AC, it is the tallest building in the city, surpassing the Noh Tower by more than 400 metres.

Would this be the Naidra Noh Tower?!

Unsure whether we knew this but it's from Alesandro Mere's automatic response when emailed. I did a search but couldn't find anything.

Quote:
Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately all the units in the building are
currently let. If vacancies become available, residential apartments are let at
the following rates:

Floors 40-60
Single-level apartments at PCL 30-35,000 a month.
These apartments benefit from the pools and gymnasiums on every third floor as
well as communal wind-buffered patio gardens.

Floors 80-100
Single-level apartments at PCL 45-50,000 a month.
These apartments benefit from pools and gymnasiums on every floor and communal
wind-buffered gardens.

Floors 120-140
Single-level and duplex apartments at PCL 65-85,000 a month.
Duplex apartments benefit from private terraces, while single-level apartments
may benefit from private gardens.

Floors 150-170
Duplex and triplex apartments at PCL 100-150,000 a month.
These high-prestige apartments all include private terrace gardens and private
pools. Several of the apartments include rooms which take up the entire
floorspace of that level of the Point, affording 360-degree panoramic views of
the City.

These benefits are of course in addition to universal Ascendancy Point benefits
including 24-hour concierge service, access to the arboretum, public gardens,
art galleries, large screens, laundry and cleaning services, and the wide
variety of Point businesses which provide their services to residents at a
substantial discount.

Please contact your licensed real estate broker who will be able to provide you
with updates as and when one of our exclusive residential opportunities becomes
available.

Strange that the following...

Quote:
Floors 150-170
Duplex and triplex apartments at PCL 100-150,000 a month.

...seems to contradict the Cognivia web site that states...

Quote:
Ascendancy Tower
The corporate headquarters of Cognivia can be found at levels 140 to 160 of Ascendancy Point. Our board, human resources, sales, marketing and planning divisions are all located here.
Nearest subway station: Ascendancy.

...???

I suppose it's possible to have living and business usage on the same floors but that high up the floor space cannot be that extensive because, as we know, the tower is cone shaped and narrows to a point?

Ah, but what's the gradient? And how wide is it at the bottom?
