Metacortex has gone live

Site went live shortly after midnight. First message changed from "stand by" to "finalizing" then site went active. Now displays a home page with News, product, contact, and login tabs. At least two new sites:

http://www.metadex.net/
http://www.theaquapolis.com/

Oops wrong button...

Punched the wrong button and started a new topic. I reposted to Matrix revolution. It'll be confusing if we post both places, so ignore this one...

Underscore Hosting, as some of you may have guessed, is not the actual hosting company for metacortechs.com. Underscore is clearly part of the ARG.

I don't know how far they typically go with these ARGs... but if you're really curious, here's the real Metacortex DNS, whois and traceroute info. Looks like the site is hosted in San Antonio, Texas.

I got all melancholic and, um... sentimental?... but also sorta filled with that mega-adrenalized can't-think-about-anything-else launch sensation when krystyn posted some stuff in #uF tonight:

Quote:
[02:06] <vpisteve> ok
[02:10] <vpisteve> ok, ready to go??
[02:10] <krystyn> Yes yes
[02:10] <vpisteve> holy shit this is scary
[02:10] * krystyn love dis part
[02:10] <vpisteve> here we go
[02:10] <vpisteve> !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

, and I felt compelled to diso... ooops... to share, I mean.

Man, that was the DAY!

heh, krystyn left out my favorite parts of that log. She captured the start but didn't capture the essence. There were some real choice bits just before or after that. Its filled with this strange mix of silence and panic and there are quite a few places where you can really get a feel for the tension that kept it all together. Prior to going live, that tension was created by the fear that we wouldn't get everything done in time. After it went live, it was created by the realization that we had gotten everything done in time and, at that point, there was no turning back.

It's always amazing watching a launch... we were observing you all so closely and we'd erupt every now and then with "omg! they found x!" and, for some reason, I always remember poor danny who was so ready to go to bed just seconds before Steve flicked the switch. Other rather vivid memories... Steve being all overwhelmed, a complete mixture of exhaustion and adreneline and Krystyn pointing out that it was just beginning. Poor Space about to fall over because he hadn't eaten anything all day aside from a donut which was hours and hours earlier...he'd been to tied to his computer learning the PHP required for Metadex to nourish himself. Oh and Clay finding strange images and such for "the urchins"

For those that missed this earlier, it was a part of a post that I made elsewhere.

Metacortechs Memories wrote:
I recently had the opportunity to review the chat logs for Metacortechs and the first logs that I analyzed were from both the PM and player chat channels the night that we launched. As I scanned the words on the page, I was transported back to that night and I could feel my body tense up and change from that pressure. We were all in the height of a massive crunch. We had had a little over six weeks to develop the game and most of us spent every free moment doing just that, but we still weren't quite ready. So that night, we finished getting a few of the sites up and their base content written.

We were launching at midnight pacific time and had just a few hours left. Every fifteen minutes or so, someone would post a time check and we'd all panic, but we knew we'd get it done on time… we had no choice! We were a well oiled machine that night and within moments of someone shouting, "I need an image of X" or "I need a paragraph about Y," someone would send it along. Steve was busy checking the server and making sure that all of the sites were unlocked and that the various passwords and such were working when he gave us the two minute warning.

We had just two minutes to upload our final work and then to check everyone else's to make sure that the edited copies were the ones that went public. The energy flowing through us at that moment was incredible and, had the story been true, I'm certain that Caesar and his friends would have noticed quite the "whomp". A cursory check of the forums and chat channels proved that a number of people were watching. It was time to flip the switch. Steve stuttered a few times, the tension was unreal. And then he came back and said "We're live". He didn't need to tell us, it was already announced in the player channels.

Their anticipation was high as they had been falling down the Rabbit Hole for several weeks and, fortunately, the world that awaited them did not disappoint. The intensity of the conversation was instantly switched from the PM channel to the player channels and, for the first time in the game, the players and the PMs were sharing an experience. While they were overwhelmed with exploring the world that we had dropped them into, we were overwhelmed with watching them explore. For the next hour or so in the PM chat, the only comments were things such as "OMG! so-and-so just found X!" "Such and such board just found Y!" "They've already figured out puzzles A B & C!" intermingled with the occasional pasting of a forum link or chat quote from one of the player chat channels.

After watching for a little over an hour, the realization that we were live was setting in and we began making mental to do lists and preparing ourselves for live game mode. The excitement of watching the player discoveries was turning into the excitement of completing the world. Yet, the extreme energy created by the surge of stress earlier in the evening finally turned into complete exhaustion and, almost simultaneously, we all went quiet and caught a very restless night's sleep. Just a few hours later, those mental to do lists flooded the PM channel and message board. We were back to work. We were filling in the world. The game was on.

Trust me, I was tempted to post more than the spamminess that I did. Smile

Very nice summation of that feeling, Brooke. You nailed it.
Yeah, no matter how much work you think it's going to be, doing one of these things, it will always, always be superceded by reality. The game consumes.
