[QUESTION] How many levels does a puzzle have?

Now we are starting to get more puzzles made available to us, I think it can be safely said that there are many that have been solved convincingly in terms of the particular puzzle involved. The answers we've given to cards involving the Sphinx's Riddle or Gauss's mathematics are, for example, virtually impossible to gainsay, in the sense that the answers to these puzzles are well - established. Within reason, it seems like the spread of card difficulty is about what we've been told it would be: red are pretty easily solvable, and as we move up the ranks it gets a bit more difficult, purple's tricky, and silver is so far proving to be pretty baffling.

In addition, there are certainly cards where it seems clear that we've come near to finding a meaningful answer ('Where?' 'Not Here' - Jigsaw, for instance) that isn't actually informing us of anything much.

Increasingly, I'm of the theory that we can end up looking *too hard* for meaning in the cards when there isn't meant to be much. Maybe getting hold of the basic answer is all we need to do, particularly for the simplest cards. The Leaderboard may well end up operating on the simple criteria of who has purchased what cards and how many answers they can provide.

We *were* vaguely promised by Adrian and the MC Team that the cards would give us more insight into Perplexian society as a whole. I guess they sort of do that simply by introducing us to incidental details, and, perhaps, giving us more information on characters we encounter elsewhere. I think the map that the cards will piece together to make could ultimately be useful for tracking the route of the Cube heist, and maybe even a few are *directly* germane to the wider investigation in hand. But it could just be that the puzzles exist for the sake of being puzzles and little more - from an in - game perspective, this may even make sense. The Cube Retrieval Team have put these cards together over the last year and a half (?), so it's unlikely (unless deliberate planting of info was going on) that the cards relate information relative to the Salk murder, say. They would probably have gone to press before that happened.

So, maybe the search for the Cube and solving the cards will turn out to be two very separate endeavours. What do people think?

I think we've had quite a clear reply from MindCandy the the cube puzzle will be solveable without actually solving any of the puzzle cards. These are simply to help us build up an image of Perplex City, and give us something fun to do. Oh ... and finance the whole operation of course Razz

I don't think that's quite what they said. I believe they said you could play the game without BUYING a single card. The cards have already led us to sites we otherwise never would have found (e.g. Violet's Blog).

I think their point was that since people who purchase card packs are likely to scan them in and post them, you don't have to BUY anything to play. On the other hand, the card solutions themselves are probably going to be very important in moving the game along.

While I agree that not all cards are going to have multiple levels of solves, I do think that the harder the card, the more likely it is to have more than one. I also think that combining certain cards together in different ways will lead to additional solutions (there is spec that the silver cards might require many other cards to solve for example).

It'll be interesting when the leaderboard goes live to see if it gives us any insight into what different kinds of solves are available.

On the other hand, I might be reading far too much into all this Smile
