[SOLVED] #210 Black - New Notation

Not sure where this came from, but it's on Brian's card catalog, but not here... Filling it in, I don't think the picture is clear enough to make out though..?

The Entertainer

No good with music personally, but those circles must represent where the fingers/thumbs go on the keys? GL to those more musically gifted Smile

Find me a pianist!

Does The Entertainer need only one hand to play? Because there are only five finger-indicators. Or what I assume are finger-indicators. Maybe the instructions are the same for both hands.

<Thinking aloud> Does the position of the dots up or down the keys indicate when they are to be played?

And the black keys are indicated by placing a dot on the line below, because otherwise they wouldn't show up. Very Happy

Just stating the blindingly obvious.

the entertainer (not sure which key it is in, this is just in a key - you can transpose to another:)

D, D#, E, C', E, C', E, C', C', D', D#', E', C', D', E', B, D', C'.
D, D#, E, C', E, C', E, C', A, G, F#, A, C', E', D', C', A, D'.
D, D#, E, C', E, C', E, C', C', D', D#', E', C', D', E', B, D', C'.
C', D', E', C', D', E', C', D', C', E', C', D', E', C', D', C', E', C', D', E', B, D', C'.

That's copied from an ocarina book. octaves go CDEFGABC'D'E'F'G'A'B'... (ie C' is one octave higher than C).

Hope that's useful

Jeb

Doesn't look like the entertainer to me, starts A, B, G, E, F#, D. Of course, I know very little about music so....

Jeb's right with the notes. I don't play piano but I can read music (sort of). I thought maybe it was a case of the score being 'placed' over the keys but looking at it more closely I dont think that's the case. The white circles would indicate fingers I suppose but I cant get my head around all the loops!

Is it possible to get 2 blown-up scans of the diagrams? If so, I'd be able to look more closely at the notes and orders of the second tune ...

Well, it's obvious that the first diagram is The Entertainer. I mean, after all it says in bold letter right above it The Entertainer. We're supposed to be worried about the second diagram, though. I somehow doubt they would make them both the same song. I think they included the first diagram as an example

Yes, but understanding how "The Entertainer" example works should help decipher the unknown. Reverse Engineering one to understand the other basically.

I'm no musician either, but I can vaguely sight - read because I can sing, and Jeb's transposition makes sense to me as well, given how I recall 'The Entertainer' sounding. It should do what that transposition does:
which is start off, repeat in part with variation, then repeat fully again, and then go into a new set of sounds.

I agree that the circles must represent the fingers on the hand - not that I know much about playing the piano, but some pieces are simple enough that you can play them one - handed, whilst others demand a stretch worthy of two.

The loops are there to make us confused - they don't seem to represent anything other than the fact that the fingers of the hand have to move to different keys during the period of playing.

The dots, as has been pointed out, represent the keys played. The black keys are the sharps and, indeed, you have to place the dot to one side otherwise it wouldn't show up.

What's missing is any real indication of what order the notes are to be played in - which is what makes the puzzle difficult. Doubly so, because the lower piece is a two hander.

With a closer look at the card (or a better knowledge of the piano keyboard than I have), it wouldn't be difficult to transcribe the notes to be played and/or experiment with them on an actual piano (if you have one of those - I do, but sadly, I'm not the piano player in my house).

The awkward thing is to work out what order the notes are coming in, because there's only a finite set of notes.

I'd like to think it was 'Ode to Joy', anyway, just because I like that on the piano Smile

Woohoo! Jeremy has come through with the goods, and there is now a detailed scan (along with low-res front and back, and some comments) available here. You might need to squint, but you should be able to make out the numbers on the black circles.

Edit: And OMG!!11!!eleven!! The good fellow has also transcribed both pieces into yer regular old fashioned sheet music.

/me straps his musical jetpack on Jetpack
