ok, i can't really see the numbers, but i think the two possible answers are whether you count the digits that you yourself write on the card as the answers or not. a bit of a quandry if you have:

9 zeros and 9 nines, but your writing in 9 for the zeros gives you another nine, so 10 nines and that gives you another zero so 10 zeros but that gives you another zero etc Wink

If you're counting the digits you yourself write, wouldn't you hit a bit of a paradox around the third answer?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
If the number of times 0 appears is 1
and the number of times 1 appears is 2
That makes the number of times 2 appears be 2 as well.

But then 2 would have now appeared 3 times. But if you change the answer to 3, it's gone back to having only having appeared twice.

Or am I just not thinking far enough ahead?

I have a feeling this is going to be one of those puzzles where you have to be thinking roughly 4 moves ahead to get it correctly and avoid paradoxes - ergo, I ain't gonna touch it Smile I'll just hang around the yellows/greens... Good luck!

*shrugs* Shows what I know Smile Nice one. Just wait now as someone finds a third solution, and this grows to a Meta 20-pager...

so do the numbers initially printed on the card count towards number totals? I'm working from that premise, but it'd be nice to get a confirmation on that.

Yeah I got the same as helper, haven't thought of any more. Which, I suppose, is a relief.

Minor revelation: As expected, the background of this card is a magic eye picture. That is, it turns 3D when you stare at it in a funny way.

Minor disappointment: There's no message there. Not even a sailboat. At least, none that I can see.

So, do these numbers mean anything if you play about with them?

I'm directing this question at those who actually were able to solve this one (i was hopeless and gave up pretty quickly - I was watching the most exciting game of cricket ever! Ashes test at Edgbaston)

I don't really know anything about codebreaking other than what I read in Da Vinci Code, but I'm sure that those who do know stuff look upon that as a bit pathetic!

Anyhoo,

Yeah, Ashes match was amazing, almost like a one-day with Australia chasing at the end.....anyway back on topic....I'm specing here but maybe the list of numbers is supposed to create a phone number? I didn't manage to solve it, but I'm gonna take another shot at it to see if I come up with anything different to the rest of you (though if I do get something different it probably means I did it wrong!!)

There is one other interpretation of the puzzle, I think, though common sense probably rules it out.

You could treat the puzzle itself as being only the preprinted text and numbers. The numbers you write in are part of the solution, not the puzzle.

Then you get the stupidly simple answer:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 0 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 1 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 2 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 3 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 4 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 5 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 6 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 7 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 8 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1
THE NUMBER OF TIMES THE DIGIT 9 APPEARS IN THIS PUZZLE IS 1

I doubt that's a valid answer, though I do wish they were clearer in the puzzle rules. Smile
