It's definitely the transit - see the attatched image which shows exactly where each of the inner planets are on their orbits - Earth and Mars are perfectly lined up. I'd also agree that it's probably Olympus Mons since that seems like the most dramatic thing to climb (this is a bestseller after all). The mountain goes into night-time after about 7am GMT and goes back through dawn after about 5pm GMT so as long as the transit doesn't happen between these times Harris would have a good view. Couldn't find anywhere that said the exact time of the transit (and unfortunately it's difficult to tell on my model) but the orbital speeds of the two planets are fairly close to each other so I'd guess the transit lasts quite a long time.

I just assumed the header of the card was written from the point of view of MC, with 'Our world' meaning Earth. Though I guess we can't be 100% sure because there's no puzzle artist, scribe or architect mentioned on the card. Looking through the other cards that I've got (I'd guess about 80% of a full set) the only others with no puzzle artist credited are #015 (Milo), #082 (Sharp Red), #176 (The Lake, though it's really Sam Loyd who did this) and #185 (Spin Cycle, also a novel extract). Whether this means anything is anyone's guess.

I just ran the date through Redshift 4, and for the best view of the transit, you don't want to be on Olympus Mons. The Sun/Earth hit the horizon at 20:24 Earth Universal Time, almost at the end of the transit, as it started many hours before.
