[Puzzle] Purple #182 Transit THIS IS AN EXCERPT FROM ONE OF PERPLEX CITY'S BESTSELLING NOVELS. SET IN OUR WORLD
Chapter five
November 10th 2084
After weeks of arduous climbing, I finally summitted today, a scant few hours early. The sun was a brilliant chip of light, like a diamond among a sackful of gems carelessly strewn across the sky. You wouldn't believe how far I can see from here, there can't be another view like this anywhere in the world. i didn't bother setting up camp before unpacking my 'scope and tripod, so i could watch that bright little star as it fell towards the Sun.
The transit itself...i felt so close. You're not supposed to cry in these suits, they say it interferes with the oxygen filter, but I couldn't help myself \- don't laugh! Anyway, I have to sign off now and make some measurements. Keep a seat warm for me at Underhill base.

May I suggest Olympus Mons as the location. Mars is dusty, and this would obscure viewing conditions unless you were above the (rather thin) atmosphere.
A couple of other mountains on mars are tall enough, so i'll try to confirm which ones are in favourable locations for the transit.
Edit (added spoilers)

I agree it's on Mars..I found this while looking around for Underhill base references:
This is the same type of structure as the "Underhill" base that was featured in Kim Stanley Robinson's book Red Mars.
it's from this site:

considering she's on mars, what does it mean when the start bit says 'set in our world'? further clue to the relationship between spacial/dimensional relationship between earth and perplex city?
rach =)

If " she is seeing earth transit the sun from mars" then I would call it a syzygy. The date might reveal whether it's a Earth, Venus or Mercury.

Transit of Earth I'm 100% certain it's a view of the transit of Earth from Mars.
And ariadne_ac is right about that Red Mars reference.

It's definitely the transit - see the attatched image which shows exactly where each of the inner planets are on their orbits - Earth and Mars are perfectly lined up. I'd also agree that it's probably Olympus Mons since that seems like the most dramatic thing to climb (this is a bestseller after all). The mountain goes into night-time after about 7am GMT and goes back through dawn after about 5pm GMT so as long as the transit doesn't happen between these times Harris would have a good view. Couldn't find anywhere that said the exact time of the transit (and unfortunately it's difficult to tell on my model) but the orbital speeds of the two planets are fairly close to each other so I'd guess the transit lasts quite a long time.

lines at top of card The block of the image at the top that has the card information - the name, number, points etc is unique on this card. It has a series of lines that look like clefs for music notation.

So perhaps PXC is on Mars? Or does the fact that Harris is an Exploration Scientist gives her the right to travel beyond the bounds of Perplex City...

I just assumed the header of the card was written from the point of view of MC, with 'Our world' meaning Earth. Though I guess we can't be 100% sure because there's no puzzle artist, scribe or architect mentioned on the card. Looking through the other cards that I've got (I'd guess about 80% of a full set) the only others with no puzzle artist credited are #015 (Milo), #082 (Sharp Red), #176 (The Lake, though it's really Sam Loyd who did this) and #185 (Spin Cycle, also a novel extract). Whether this means anything is anyone's guess.

transit Does it bother anyone that her description of "so I could watch that bright little star as it fell towards the Sun" doesn't at all match what a transit looks like? Or are we just writing this off as fiction?
Also, I don't know about this transit but the last transit of earth viewed from Mars wasn't visible from the Olympia Mons. I can't find the reference I read but it was linked as a reference at the end of the wiki article. Perhaps all we need to answer is Mars and syzygy.

I just ran the date through Redshift 4, and for the best view of the transit, you don't want to be on Olympus Mons. The Sun/Earth hit the horizon at 20:24 Earth Universal Time, almost at the end of the transit, as it started many hours before.
The text mentions
Quote:
so I could watch that bright little star as it fell towards the Sun.
I try and find the correct mountain.
