[RESOURCE] The Puppetmaster Guide Wiki!

So, this excellent post got me thinking as to how we could really move forward in developing a comprehensive guide to PMing. It seems to me that a discussion board format such as this isn't a particularly suitable venue for creating a permanent resource.

Hence, The Puppetmaster Guide Wiki is now available! Kindly hosted by Bill of Deaddrop fame, it needs your input and knowhow to turn it into a one stop shop for would-be PMs. I've put up a front page and some potential links, but apart from that it's empty.

I'm going to ask various sites (Deaddrop, ARGtalk, etc) if I can put up some of their existing stuff on the guide, with credit of course.

A few notes to contributors:

CONTRIBUTE! THEN CONTRIBUTE SOME MORE!

Although it looks a little different to other wikis you may have come across, it runs off the usual MediaWiki format, so editing pages should be a familiar process. If you're new to doing that, don't worry - it's very intuitive to use.

Please try and keep advice as neutral as possible - the wiki isn't for advocating certain types of games over others, it's for teaching people how to create the game they want to make. If you want to discuss an issue, then there's a "discuss this page" link at the bottom of each page which will give you a space to do just that. If you want to give a certain perspective, please 'own' your comments. A little "In my experience..." or "In the past, I've found that..." can go a long way. Sorry if that sounds a little moany, but I totally get my fill of ARG politics (which, let's face it, I secretly love) from UF.

Hope you all like this idea and can find a little something to add! Very Happy

I assumed it goes without saying that Deaddrop content can be incorporated into the wiki.

To keep things above board, you must register an account on the wiki to edit/create pages. The registration is separate from Deaddrop membership and from the game wiki at http://deaddrop.us/wiki since they all run off of different databases.

Registration is free and quick. Anyone can browse and search the wiki anonymously.

Well this seems to make the "how can we best utilize the PM Guide Forum" chat a bit less relevant. We probably shouldn't have the PM Guide forum split into two different places as it just makes figuring out where things are a bit more difficult.

So, assuming we're going with the wiki (like the idea!), should we change the focus of the chat and, if so, to what? Should we postpone it until we figure that out? I know of one person, at least, that wasn't going to be able to make it on Sunday that will be thrilled if it's postponed. I, however, will likely be out of moderating it or setting it up as I won't have stable internet for a few weeks.

- b (who doesn't always deal with sudden changes well so forgive me if this sounds 'off' - i just want to know what i'm planning and if i'm planning it)

Good grief, I managed to completely miss the bit in your other post where you said:

Maybe not so much asking advice and what not, but perhaps we can have a bit of a chat on how we could best use the PM Guide Forum (as colin suggested in another thread).

...so I was imagining it was an advice session all along! That said, I reckon we should stick to the original plan - we can still talk about how best to use this forum, and maybe discuss if/how to use the wiki and other external resources too. Unfortunately the mystery person won't be able to make it, but I guess if we reschedule it then other people will miss it instead?

And thanks for giving the go-ahead about deaddrop stuff, Bill!

not a problem, it's not as if it was v. clear. An advice chat is fine by me. Perhaps we should start with a bit of a mention of the wiki & this forum, deal with any thoughts/ideas/suggestions on them and then move into a more general PM advice sort of chat. It would probably be a bit more productive. I just want to make sure we address the recent issue of how we, members of the indie arg community on whatever side of the curtain, could best support the indie PM community especially the new PMs. Anyway this thread probably isn't the place for all of this.

oh, and seriously, the wiki is v. cool... it was just a bit of a shock to see it and I was in quite a mood to begin with. I never know how things come across online and I hope I didn't sound bitchy.

Yeah, I missed that bit too. I had in my head the chat was "How to be a better PM."

Sorry imbri Embarassed

I totally agree. (I wasn't very clear - this is the "original plan" I thought we should stick to.)

Whew!

I'm glad plans have changed, because when I saw the discussion on the board about having a discussion in chat discussing how to better use the board, well...

Dammit, where's the exploding head icon?

Sorry it caused head explosion.

As there have been more than a few tense threads on the matter of the indie community and the forums, it seemed that chat might be a productive venue. Sometimes it's easier to come together as a group in real time for a brainstorming & support session. I still think that it should be addressed to a degree in the chat which I would hate to see disolve into a few lecturing the many on how to best PM... not only is it condescending, it's rather antithetical to the inspiring post and the intended purpose of a collaboritve community.

I think the wiki structure could work great for this, however it does somewhat come back to the orginal point. if we have a wiki why have this here? (Not meaning to say one is better, or right, just that the duplication doesn't really help. As previously stated, both are flying under the argn banner, so imo it would be better if everything pointed to the same site)

Well, I'm not sure they're designed to serve the exact same purpose.

I see the wiki as a neutral source of information for puppetmasters, something that will hopefully stand on its own as a technical guide to creating the game. On the other hand, I think this forum serves a great purpose in providing a forum for debate and Q&As about creating an ARG, although I agree it could be better utilised and "Puppetmaster Guide" may become something of a misnomer.
