I guess we're all in the same boat?

I know I sound like every other person who steps for the first time on this forum, but I've read all the articles, seen all the wikis, read all the press coverage and interviews...but I still have some questions.

First - what is this 333 business that everyone keeps talking about?

Second - Regarding the scoreboard (or what you use for points), I read an thread earlier saying something about using the scratchoff code at the top of the cards to register your points. I have three problems with this theory:

-- I read that ARGs are supposed to be free - granted, you get more out of it and have a higher chance of "winning" if you put money into it, but in the meantime, if I want to solve puzzles on my own, shouldn't I be able to view the cards and keep track of my score? Your socioeconomical status shouldn't affect your ability to play the game and score well.
-- Is every single scratchoff code on every single card different? Because if so...then that would be okay. But if the code is the same on the same cards, that kind of defeats the purpose.
-- If you get the puzzle wrong, does this kill the code for the card? That is, you obviously don't get points, but you can't re-enter your answer in again? That would be terrible, because you'd have to buy packs of cards and hope for duplicates (which is quite possibly the worst part of trading cards).

Thirdly, is the Receda Cube a real, physical item? Like, can I go walk to a certain latitude and longitude and dig and find it in the ground, and physically hold it?

Fourthly, am I correct in saying that basically every card holds a puzzle - you solve that puzzle, and the puzzle somehow gives you a (hidden or not) clue to solving the mystery of the cube?

Fifthly, how do you people afford all these cards, and solve these puzzles so quick?! Don't you have jobs?! Haha.

Thanks for your time, energy and patience! I'll do everything I can to aid in our quest to find the cube...

Cheers,
Katie

amen!

Your socioeconomical status shouldn't affect your ability to play the game and score well.

Well, really, ARGs are classified as either grassroost things or ads fFor something. This one happens to be both. It's an ad fFor itself. If you like playing the game, go out and buy more of the game. Or play along at home and dont buy the game. whatever you like.

Thirdly, is the Receda Cube a real, physical item? Like, can I go walk to a certain latitude and longitude and dig and find it in the ground, and physically hold it?

Yes. yes it is. And if you know where it is....

Fourthly, am I correct in saying that basically every card holds a puzzle - you solve that puzzle, and the puzzle somehow gives you a (hidden or not) clue to solving the mystery of the cube?

so fFar we have seen 3 kinds of cards: Simple answers multi answers, and Plot-based answers. The simple answers appear to be fFun things to play with. The multi answers are fFun too, but have more steps to them. The plot answers might otherwise be a simple answer, but somehow involves a bigger question or mysetery in the Perplex City world.

Fifthly, how do you people afford all these cards, and solve these puzzles so quick?! Don't you have jobs?! Haha.

that's the beauty of distributed thinking: a lot gets done very quickly. amazing, no?

Wow, lots of questions....

During the initial launch or pre-launch or whatever nomenclature you want to give it, people were sent parcels containing sample cards, a letter (as in a piece of paper with text on it), and a coded letter (as in A..Z) as a footnote. There were 333 of these. Plus, 333 is a very cubic number, eh?

...scoreboard and scratchoff questions...

We can only guess because it has not been released, but it would make sense that the scoreboard will accept answers for cards, but only for people who actually own the cards (as opposed to someone just grabbing all the answers from here and plugging them all in.) I have not seen anyone post anything about what's under the scratchoffs, other than it is a long alphanumeric code, but it is a good guess that they are all different, even for multiples of the same card. Once you scratch off the code and enter it into the scoreboard, it's used and the card is now a keepsake and can't be played again. The fact that it's under scratchy foil is really cool, though, because it means you can trade cards and not worry that a code has already been used. Again, this is all pure speculation based on what we have seen so far, but everyone pretty much agrees that this is the way it'll probably work.

So far, most of them have been free because they are either clever marketing campaigns or they were run by grassroots folks who just run them for the fun of it and don't worry that they're not recouping their costs. There have been a few that have been for pay (see: Majestic). As it stands, Adrian has said in an interview that paying for cards doesn't necessarily give you an edge. The cards are just cards and give you some background into Perplex City life. The real prize comes from finding the cube, which involves piecing together clues from a variety of sources.

Who knows? Probably.

Nope. The cards are just for fun, giving you background to the Perplex City world and characters. They may be useful in finding the cube, but because the cards and answers will be here and at the catalog, they are accessible to everyone.

Maybe some of us have good jobs that pay well and give us some spare time while parts are fab'ed and software is built and tested. Wink

RE the fifth Q:

Those that are still students (ie: me) can pick a work experience job (like me) that involves long periods of lounging on the internet while waiting for someone to remember you can lend a hand on a delivery or something. Now, what can I do... Twisted Evil

Wow, you got all of your questions answered but not even a proper welcome!

Well Katie, Welcome to Perplex City!

You've started playing at just the right time, everything is just starting to get exciting. Don't be afraid to ask questions, post theories, and speculate about the tiniest details. If you have any other questions, you can make a post or send a PM. Again, welcome to Perplex City.

PS.

Good to see another Columbusian here. Maybe the cube will be hidden in our neck of the woods! Wink
