[UPDATE] Kurt's Blog 18 July 2005

Kurt wrote:
HTML problems and tech

Seems like people have started to find this website now, judging by the hits and emails I've been receiving. Most emails are about one of two things - firstly, that the HTML or CSS isn't correct in this page, and secondly, questions about Perplex City tech.

About the HTML. I can't get my head around it - it seems like a perfectly reasonable standard, and so does CSS. I just don't understand why it displays wrongly for some people. I've been designing this site using a virtual machine on my key at the Academy, running Firefox, and it looks fine to me. Anyway, if anyone has a suggestion on how to correct it (preferably easily!) without changing the look, I'd appreciate it.

So I've also had queries about our use of VR, immersive UIs, the Centre for Reality Research, replication technology, robots and more. As I'm sure you're used to hearing, I can't tell you about any of that. There are some seriously strict rules governing communication between Perplex City and Earth, and high up on the list of forbidden items is technology transfer. I'm not sure whether I agree with it, but I can tell you there've been some pretty vociferous arguments on the subject here at the Academy, and at the Council. So while I'm able to talk in generalities, especially about tech that you are already currently exploring, any specifics are definitely prohibited - sorry Rena and Night Watch!

Firefox user...I knew it!

OOG - I wonder if MC have been a bit sneaky here by fouling up the CSS in such a way that it wouldn't work on I.E?

AFAIK Internet Explorer is still the predominant browser out there (if not the Browser of choice) so maybe MC thought they'd test the waters, put up a slightly fouled site (Nothing too bad, just a slight design error) and then see how long it would be before they started getting mails and also how many mails they got. That could be a good way of judging how many people are taking part in the game? (Of course is could just be sloppy coding that wasn't checked on anything other than Firefox but??)

Dear Kurt,

Very pleased that you're a Firefox fan, maybe you could add a button to your website?

<a href="http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&amp;id=0&amp;t=83">Get Firefox!</a>

complimentary colour scheme, look!

May I take it upon myself to recommend the tinyurl extension...invaluable.

edited out some random nonsense berating him for mailing sixsidedsquare and asking after Violet

Hey..

My RSS reader says someone named "Melody" wrote those posts, not Kurt. I use Safari's RSS feed reader. Anyone else notice this?

Safari says Kurt wrote it for me, might have been changed.

Also in IE it seems to work fine now.

It must have been changed, because it shows as Kurt for me now as well.

Are the PMs reading this or something?

This anti-technology transfer stance PPC has adopted seems rather unfair.
Even if their defence was a 'Prime Directive' like non interference policy, it would seem to have been broken given that we are actually playing this game. Basically, PPC can violate any copyright or patent on our world that it feels like violating and co-opt and assimilate technology of our world with absolutley no benefit coming back. It has an air of hippocracy about it, they can use any of our tech they wish, even those that come from fields they did not develop themselves, but the moment we want to know the specifics of cognitive enhancers, or inter-universal communication technology, or replication devices, they get all non-interference on us. [/rant]

Hmmm, this could be a view from earth topic.

Careful you don't reveal your source of info tough, Kurt's is the only one that we have confirmed as being unknown by anyone else on their side (at least, according to him)
