Apologies email from VirtuaQuest This morning I (and likely almost all of the registered players) received this email.

Subject: COD Status
COD Player:
I would like to inform you about the status of the City of Domes ARG. As many players / observers have suspected, VirtuQuest.Com (VQC) was hired to develop and run this Alternative Reality.
In the fall of 2004, our client contacted VQC in regards to develop an ARG
based in the 1976 movie Logan's Run. After several contacts and meetings, VQC entered into a contract to develop and run the "City of Domes" open ARG. After several months of development VQC presented the final ARG to our client who then approved all components, puzzles, storylines, etc. After the initial launch on June 1, 2005 we were pleased with the pre-game player count at 300+ players with 40% from outside the United States. However, our client did not fulfill their part of the contract for compensation. We have been extremely patient and tolerant of our client's excuses for the last 8 weeks. After several communications, we informed our client that we would stop the game in progress unless they fulfilled their aspect of the contract. In one response they said, " You (VQC) have too much invested in this ARG to stop mid-game". These events have taken a toll on the entire VQC staff, and our decision to suspend "City of Domes" was not taken lightly. We have great respect for the ARG community, players, and entities such as ARGN.COM and Unfiction.com. We realize that many players have put their own time/energy into "City of Domes" and are being left feeling very dissatisfied. VQC has been developing ARGs for the last 4 years and have
never had a situation such as this occur. VQC past up several other development opportunities to take on "City of Domes" which makes this that much more painful.
At this time VQC is taking the high road in regards to publicly naming our client. However, they (our client) are more than welcome to tell their side of the story. We would be happy to see their view of these events since they will not respond to our questions at this time.
Thank you for your efforts and play in the spirit of COD. It is because of players like you that ARGs are so fun to develop. Please accept our deepest apology for this unconcluded effort.
Sincerely;
Jacob Trasky
This is a really terible situation to be in: the client refusing to pay for creative services. I would like to see a confirmation on the VQC website sometime soon.

Barring any unofficiality of this email, I sent this in response. I'm posting it here to make my feelings known.

Thank you very much for your candor. We are all dissapointed, but I'm sure most of us will not hold any ill will on future gaming exercises. The efforts of both VirtuQuest and the PMs are appreciated and were enjoyed, and I wish both VQC and your errant clients the best of luck in future endeavors.
I will be posting this response to Unfiction in the interest of publicly endorsing your honesty and your endeavor.
Thank you for providing as much of an ARG experience as you could.

Of course the obvious public information checks out. Although I would like to see a confirmation on the VQC website sometime soon.
Yep, got it this morning.
Well, that is sad to hear. I can totally understand VQC's reason for halting the ARG. To have compensation for your work withheld, and then have the client say: "You won't stop this mid-game" is a situation that can happen in that context in any business. Sometimes a client in a business does this, and that business (VQC) needs to handle the situation appropriately. If the events did happen the way VQC states, then I have no issue with how VQC handled it.
It is sad to see City of Domes officially in a suspended state, but perhaps the client will see this and uphold their end of the contract. I believe if this were to happen, City of Domes would pick up where it left off.

Having been in this situation in a previous life as a web developer, VQC's plight is thoroughly understandable.
Hilariously, more than one past client of a company I worked for tried to offer us "stock" in their sure-thing bazillion dollar dot com idea after the funds dried up. Just like the Simpsons episode where the dot com issued stock on toilet paper rolls.
Here's my question - what was the promotional tie-in with COD? It obviously can't be cheap to do a project like this, so I find it hard to believe that someone would just fund a game out-of-pocket without having some tie-in to a larger campaign of some sort...

Well, I assume they got at least a little payment up front, but who knows what their business practices are.
I'm sure they'll be asking for a much bigger deposit up front next time.

A real shame about this, and kind of a negative experience for my first ARG
I agree with everyone else that its no fault of VQC, and it's not going to stop me playing any more of their games.

That's the real shame; people should be able to look around, choose a decently presented ARG and have a good time for their maiden voyage. I'm sorry it worked out for you this way.

Im sure the VQC organizers have been agonizing about how to come forward, even without our griping. It's a standup thing to do, and if things really did go down how they describe, then they have my sympathy and my rapt attention for future games.

VQC have systematically released a whole host of various different games which have all been fun and even the Corporate Edition versions that they let us get our teeth into (Even though it is a company team building exercise!). I am still looking forward to the next CE which should be coming soon and from time to time still look in on the evil virtucube I can understand their predicament and at least they had the guts to tell us what happened as they didnt really have to remove the curtain at the end of the day. Good work with the COD pregame and look forward to more like it!
Phew that was a mouthful

VQ is a top notch provider of ARG (remember THX last year?).
It was evident that CoD had some major work behind it (good website, multiple live phone call interactions). Tough luck that the corporate sponsor (I'd love to know so I can send them my own feedback, but in a polite letter of disappointment) backed out like that. Up until DomeCentral went quiet, we all spec'd that it was VQ and knew this would be good. Then, with no contact for two weeks, that was the start of the Grassroots spec.
It is pretty well known that VQ would monitor sites like UF for feedback - so they knew we were losing interest and needed closure. I'm glad we got it. I'm sure this is not the last time we'll find another VQ rabbithole.
Meanwhile, Orbital Colony has begun. While grassroots, I'm sure these folks have been working hard all year and they've had quality/experienced PMs as mentors.

Well, this is dissapointing news. Ah well, guess I'll check out that new OrbiconCorp ARG. It looks promising for being so low budget.

Yes Konamouse,
I remember THX last year, that was actually my first ARG, and this was my 2nd.
I pick ARG's to play, based on my interests, both these films are 2 of my favourites, so I had background knowledge before I even started.
I am hoping that this game has just suspended and may continue at some point in the future, even though that is very unlikely.
VTQ have not actually stated that the game is totally closed yet, so I will hold a glimmer of hope here.
I really would like to know who their client was as well, if they could'nt afford to compensate VTQ for all the hard work they put into this ARG, then they should not've started it in the first place! They must've known that they were gonna upset loads of ARGers all over the world, and also discredit VTQ in some peoples eyes.
I still have trust in them and would play another ARG created by them in the future.
Lastly, I would like to publicly thank Virtuquest for letting us know the score regarding COD.
