EDGE magazine (UK) - Perplex City

From spugmeistress here:

Quote:

Before raising the idea of investigating this issue, I realise that you mentioned in a previous issue the emerging aspects of Alternate Reality Games such as the BBC's Jamie Kane game. I feel, however, that a more in-depth look at these games should be given by your writers in a forthcoming issue, especially with online games such as Perplex City (www.perplexcity.com) providing new and potentially revolutionary ways of looking at the ways in which we engage with games. Perhaps even a glance at websites such as the Alternate Reality Gaming Network (www.argn.com) would suggest that the emergence of these games is perhaps a move into the mainstream, and that these games provide a level of interactivity unseen in other conventional formats.

Edge:
Interestingly, alternate reality gaming, despite being initially perceived as one of the 'geekier' offshoots of traditional gaming, is one that is drawing in many new players. Expect more coverage in the coming months.

Alternative Alternative Reality Gaming
Today, 01:23
Alternative Reality Gaming (ARG) has taken an interesting turn, after confirmation from the makers of Perplex City that the game is a completely stand-alone project rather than a glorified commercial. Until now, the real world-based games have either been home-grown amateur efforts, or promotional material for large companies. The previously most prominent game, I Love Bees, was eventually revealed to be a marketing build-up to the launch of Halo 2. Others have unveiled themselves as advertising for companies such as Stella Artois, BMW or movies like Spielberg's AI.
The people behind Perplex City, London-based Mind Candy, told Wired.com that they intend to fund their $200,000 prize for the person who discovers the game's missing cube through the sale of game cards that will help players get closer to the answers. Mind Candy's CEO Michael Smith explained that the $5 packs will further integrate the web-based game into the players' real lives.

The reason we think this works is that the game is very sociable. You can take the cards with you to the pub or do them at work on your lunch break.

Perplex City has been running for a couple of months already, but the game will start proper over the next few weeks as the cards go on sale around the world. Packs are available at £2.50 each from PlayLounge on Beak Street in Soho.

For more information on ARGs and their current incarnations, check www.argn.com.
