The worth of a poll is what it will bring

My poll thread was locked.

My boycott of Stella Artois was not a threat at all, but a statement of fact. 77% of those who answered the poll said that they would also boycott Stella until such time as the Sable and Shuck game was resolved in some way. And yet the thread gets locked.

The people who didn't want the thread to continue would have done better to just stop posting in it.

The thread was doing nicely as both a statement of dissatisfaction and a countdown to the end of the 6-week period by the end of which the results should be announced.

If that thread broke the rules or TOS of this forum, I would have appreciated it if someone had mentioned it to me If it didn't, please explain why it is now locked.

I know we're disappointed that the game sorta fizzled, but I have to wonder if this type of thread is a good thing. The company took a chance on using an ARG as marketing and that's still a good thing isn't it? Could you imagine if an Audi exec had pulled the plug on Heist because they saw people boycotting a product because of an ARG that didn't quite turn out the way we wanted?

You know, a boycott is one of the most damaging things you could do to this genre.

You don't know what's going on behind their scenes, you don't know if anyone even has the authoritative "rights" to post anything anymore. Maybe someone quit. Maybe someone died. Maybe there are Non-Disclosure Agreements binding people from doing anything further despite WANTING to post something. Maybe someone owns copyrights and has decided not to let a word of anything be posted because they - not the company - are doofusburgers. There may be a completely innocent reason why they haven't done more right now.

Instead, what such actions constitute is a threat - it almost guarantees that you will scare off PM's both corporate and grassroots, that you will hurt them if they do not entertain you sufficiently.

You're entitled to dislike a game, and you're even entitled to be disappointed. But please don't make threats like this because you're going to hurt all of us as a genre in the long run.

Thanks Sin for giving us more good reasons why we might never hear from the creators of this game. I remember the night one of the PMs from Search4Ed came into chat and very reluctantly revealed who he was and and told us things were not good behind the scenes. He mostly hinted at all of this because he had signed a non disclosure agreement. It was hard for him to watch us floundering and begging for someone to tell us what was going on.

So the game is over and in 2 weeks we'll find out who won and maybe we'll find out the solves to the puzzles. But in the meantime please can we let this thread rest?

I think if you carefully read the above it will answer all your questions.

It doesn't matter how many people said they will or will not boycott. You did not break TOS or anything like that. It's very simple really: Unfiction is a place where we care about the ARG genre as a whole. Your post has the potential of hurting the genre. We don't want that to happen.

Try to look at the bigger picture, it's not just about how someone hurt your feelings and you wanna punch them in the face. It's about showing that we are a mature community that can handle things like this. We don't need a countdown, we can check the calendar very easily. It's not that hard just to wait to find out what happened before jumping into conclusions that have a negative impact on the genre.

The three people who replied above have been here for almost three years. You have been here for almost three month. They KNOW what they are talking about, so please trust them on this one and don't take it personally. I can understand your feelings and your need to vent, but let's stay focused on the whole picture and not turn this into something that will needlessly hurt the community.

I don't mod this forum, but eh, I'd have locked it.

It's just a bit... overdramatic, spiteful, malicious, unnecessary, and most of all futile. Whether you think the game sucked or not, I really think it's much more fun to move on and have fun with a new game than bitterly kick your enemy's corpse. I don't think it was an attempt to limit your freedom of expression (sorry that you felt that way) but the thread encouraged more post-game bitterness and moping. I do think it is important that advertisers and other groups realise that ARGs are complicated, demanding, risky things to produce, and that it ain't necessarily all sunshine and roses, but I think it's finally gone too far. While I've been as frustrated as the rest of you guys at moments, I've frequently been taken aback by the sheer vitriol that's been unleashed by some players, in response to the same flaws that have merely left me non-plussed. If the PM's have been reading the forums (and they almost certainly have been) then it really isn't any surprise whatsoever that they aren't interested in making contact with us.

Sin' is definitely on the mark when he suggests that the situation behind the curtain is probably much more complicated and difficult than you imagine. So, guys - time to move on! I'll see you all at the "They've announced a winner" thread in two weeks. Then off for a long holiday in Perplex City Smile

(Maybe whoever locked the thread in question would like to offer a comment?)

I locked it because of the reasons listed above and because I agreed with dashcat. Let's just wait and see what happens, hey?

Well, there was a poll there. If you wished to disagree with the idea, you could have voted "no".

I don't mind telling you that I am pissed off about this. Just because you disagree with me doesn't mean that it's fair to go locking my poll. I don't expect everyone to agree with everything I say, but to treat me like some sort of troll is unacceptable. I have been a contributing member of this forum for a while now, and I am unhappy to be subject to what I believe is abuse of power.

I, like the moderators, feel that a poll of that sort may damage the ARG genre. While I have no problem with you expressing your view, and other people agreeing with it, it does seem that you are encouraging people to boycott Stella on the grounds that you got angry at the end of a game. I am sorry to say this, but companies are hardly going to invest in a game like this (which, i imagine you enjoyed until the end), if they think that it will result in fewer people buying their product. There was probably a legal reason that the person couldn't be named and the solution couldn't be given for six weeks. Just get over it, you may have damaged the genre, but we forgave you, if you continue to rant, we may turn against you again. COntinue like this, and you will almost certainly be banned from UF.

hey... about that poll... I understand the reasons behind it and I don't think the community was turning against you at all. We all understand your frustration.

It isn't personal, just a sortof paranoid self-protective view we have that if sponsors/clients see games failing cause bad publicity (which, you know, they probably think through carefully before they sign up to do game anyway--because obviously a game failing isn't going to leave people with an entirely positive feeling) they will stop supporting games.

At the end of the day, we want people to make games. So that overriding concern was the focus. Not you personally. Smile

At least some notice about this game should be forthcoming. Maybe someone did win after all.

Thanks Rose, I understand what you're saying, and thanks for saying it nicely. Smile

@oliverkeers, I'm not going to dignify your post with a response.

Yeah, it doesn't really work like that. But thanks for playing! Razz

I'm overjoyed to see that there's now some movement from the PMs about the game, and even a suggestion that they'll be indulging us with some PM chat and suchlike. This will be my last comment about this matter.

I imagine, also, that the 6 week period is the period required by law by some sort of lotteries commission in the UK, because no one outright won the money.I would say they probably already know who came the closest, but their judgement has to be confirmed/audited by this commission / governing body before the prize is allowed to be given - I *imagine* (as that's what happens with Lotteries and such aswell).
