Or perhaps he's referring to the chess automaton "The Turk" from the 1700's. It was a clockwork machine that people actually believed could play championship chess.

One of the more famous games played by The Turk was when he/it was challenged by Napoleon Boneparte in 1809. I'm not sure if it's important, but here's a copy of that game.

i'm not mapping out these moves, and can't see them in my head. Could they be spelling letters or semaphore or something else on the board?

Attached are the games played on Yahoo! Chess. Notice that xover222 plays similar moves each game.

Note: xover222 resigned each game.

Before he played on Yahoo! Chess he was playing a game with me through messenger. I wrote the moves down that he played, which are very similar to the moves he played on Yahoo Chess:
