Well, I believe you need a sony erricsson cell phone to figure out the answer. You try typing in the message and see what words you're given to choose from as you type. Not that I have a cell phone with text messaging to try it out with, but that's my impression.
you dont need a sony erricsson phone, just any mobile phone that has t9 (predictive) text messaging on it. or if your phone doesnt do texting or doesnt have t9 (dont need it with a qwerty layout on my nokia 5510) or if you dont have a phone, you can still work it out as long as you know what letters are on each number on the phone keypad (e.g. abc are all on 2, def on 3 etc.) so you can work out how the t9 might have got confused. either way, unless you have deliberately put smirnoff, carling and barmaid into your phones dictionary, they wouldnt all come up automatically anyway.

The author could have sent a text message asking for a 'shot' but entered 'pint' instead

strange... actually, if you look closely, the "f" in "after" is strange. It actually looks like a "t" or a cross ( you know, the cross with Jesus... or something.).

Nah, that's just the grainy image. Once you combine the image quality of the phone screen itself, then the print, then the low-res scan, things can start to look a bit funny.

I agree with Strange. Looking directly at the card itself (not the scanned image) the "f" in "after" is definitely odd and looks more like a cross.
Should there be more of the text message? The bar on the right hand side suggests so along with the "More" option in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Looking a little closer it does appear as though some of the characters are a different shade to the rest of the text (it's very difficult to see from the scanned image).
As with most of these cards you don't know whether you are over analysing things but it did seem a little easy for a green card.

All sony-ericsson phones have the "more" button on the right hand side. It brings up a menu.

What about the scrollbar? It looks like it is at the end of the message and that there may be text before it. Is that normal Eriksson behaviour?
Sorry these may be dumb questions but I've only ever had Nokias.

I do not know about this phone in particular, but often they have a header of some kind--who sent it, date/time stamp, etc.

you can use any mobile phone really, I used my Siemens one (the cheapest one I could find) as long as it has predictive text. My phone, at least, didn't have a lot of the words needed, like smirnoff, carling, and barmaid, but using a bit of logic and deduction, I worked out the answer EVENTUALLY.
Brilliant puzzle tho! Ingenious use of modern technology (that wouldn't go over my head!).
Oh, and the digits don't mean anything when typed in as a message. On my phone (maybe it's different with other makes) 0 is the punctuation key and so wou;dn't work in a message.

Might not mean anything at all, but the header date hasn't happened yet. As September is month 09, the numbers give us 24-09-05 14:04, or 240-905-1404. Can't pull anything off a reverse phone lookup though, other than 240 is an area code in Maryland, USA.
240 is also the country code for Equitorial Guinea. 249 (removing the 0 from 09) is the country code for Sudan.

hey all,
i tried text messaging the number +44 240 905 1404, didnt get an error message but didnt get a reply either. i've also tried to text the clue line (44 7781 474 199) with a similar response(or.. lack of response i guess, hehe:-), so maybe its just me/my phone/my country's cell network and the numbers not a complete dead duck just yet... would be interested in hearing others results of texting

To date, I haven't heard of anyone getting a message back from the hint line... I think Von must be asleep...

Perhaps the hint line isn't going to go live until the first wave proper?
