[UPDATE] Sentinel: Earth Cuisine/Blue Heron Aug 5

Quote:
Restaurants Embrace Earth Cuisine
By FOSTER LIDDELL
As the city's enthusiasm for all things Earth-related reaches unheralded heights, restaurants are starting to cash in with speciality dishes concocted to replicate the varied tastes of Earth. Prominent restaurant critic Wayne Cordoba said that the interest in Earth cuisine is a fairly new development. "Fashion is one thing, it's very disposable. But what people choose to eat, that is a very intimate decision," he said. "Our people are only now becoming ready for that kind of familiarity with Earth. ... Before now it would have been very uncomfortable."

Hot curry enchiladas are the highlight in the Mobius Strip bar Mexi's Place, which serves traditional South American dishes. The enchiladas are spicy and creamy alike, swimming in a brightly-coloured hot sauce. The bar offers a free meal to anyone who can eat an entire dish of their hottest rendition. "Nobody's done it yet," boasted the owner, Maxwell Ayala.

Authentic American pemmican is an increasingly popular snack food sold, especially among students, who often stay up to all hours. This high-energy snack consists of dried meat and fruit pressed into durable bars. Pemmican bars were first introduced in the Bridge Restaurant earlier in the year, but their popularity is making inroads in even the trendy Dalia Way shopping district.

Even haute hotspot Conundra has bowed to popular pressure and introduced Earth-style hot dogs, consisting of a heavily spiced beef sausage on a soft baguette, with such traditional Earth toppings as fermented cabbage (also called kimchee), mustard sauce, and tomato paste. "For a true taste of Earth, we create even the condiments in-house," said chef Heidi Halawa. "We have gone to extreme measures to ensure that our Earth-inspired dishes are absolutely authentic."

Blue Heron Unveiled
Sculptor Aisha Mpongo has unveiled her new work, 'Blue Heron.' The giant sculpture is composed of corrosion and stress-resistant metal alloys, and is located off the coast of the city, where Mpongo has calculated that it is visible rising over the horizon on a clear day.

The earth food article is great - it is a parody of how one culture on earth mangles the cuisine of another and pronounces it authentic.

Not so screwy my dear- curry's made from chillies! Mind, I couldn't say anything about kimchee, I've never heard of it before...

H'm, maybe I oughta tell them that fermented cabbage is called "sauerkraut" (which is German for 'sour cabbage' IIRC)?

Sauerkraut? Now we're talking. Yuk. Nasty stuff.
A cabbage by any other name...

Yeah, but it's the wrong kind of chili sauce for Mexican food! You need jalapenos, or habaneros, or chipotles...

As for kimchee: It's a Korean food, produced traditionally by burying a cabbage and letting it rot (I'm sure they have more sanitary ways of making it now, but it's still damn nasty). What the folks at Conundra probably wanted to put on their hot dogs is sauerkraut, which is a PICKLED, not fermented, cabbage product. Different process, different taste.

Kimchee isn't too bad. Just make sure that when you open the jar you only have people that really like you (and can forgive the smell) or really hate you around. Anybody in the middle ground will become part of the latter group.

Someone really needs to do a 'view from earth' to put them right! Very Happy

One thing that puzzles me (well, one of many things! Wink ) is that I am sure we have been told that the only point of communication between our world and theirs is through the Academy? So what the heck are they doing swapping cooking tips when there is a missing Cube they are supposed to be seeking!?!?

Of course it could be that some enterprising individual in PPC is just making up these things and passing them of a genuine Earth recipies. That may explain why they seem to have got things so wrong...
