So what the heck are they doing swapping cooking tips when there is a missing Cube they are supposed to be seeking!?!?

I'm inclined to think it's not the whole population of Perplex City who is looking for the Cube. The Cube seems to be missed solely by the Academy, the authorities and by the various religious fanatics who understand its importance (whatever that may be). Everyone else is getting dressed up in their khakis and heading down to the Mobius Strip for some food and drink.

Liken it to the fact that neither I or probably you are actively searching for Osama Bin Laden. I just want a beer.

Welll, no I agree that not everyone will be hunting the Cube and that life has to go on as normal. However, my point was that, if communication to Earth is only through some strange device at the Academy, then logically use of this device will be limited either by the number of people that have physical access or by available 'bandwidth' of communication. Given that it is the academy's stated aim to retrieve the cube then it just strikes me as odd that such trivial information is being passed.

Basically, they're telling us about everyday life in Perplex City, and that includes the local delicacies, don't it? According to those 'in the know', we'll find it easier to find the cube if we know more about the place it disappeared from.

What the folks at Conundra probably wanted to put on their hot dogs is sauerkraut, which is a PICKLED, not fermented, cabbage product. Different process, different taste.

You've not been reading my previous series of bacterium of the week signatures...sauerkraut is indeed fermented by Leuconostoc mesenteroides, which produces lactic and acetic acids, pickling from within (with a little help from Lactobacilli)

Mmmm love those bugs Smile

Ahem, now back to the serious subject of mixed-up Earth cuisine . . . does anyone have any recipes for sauerkraut or anything like that? I can provide a couple good recipes for cheese popovers, barbecued spareribs, and the like if someone wants to work with me on a View from Earth about *real* Earth cuisine . . .
