Perplex City Forums

Now that perplexcityforums.com is up and running, I was wondering if we should consider shutting down the puzzle card discussions here (it'd really cut down on the number of places we have to check for updates). Obviously, the meta discussions should be kept open, but having the puzzle card discussions here and there seems redundant. Anyone else agree/disagree (or just hate me for suggesting it)?

Also, if we do end the discussion threads here, is there any way to transfer them all to the new forums? Sort of a pre-perplexcityforums.com archive?

Edit: added poll as suggested by AppleTRON

I, for one, am reluctant to leave the safety of our little forum and go anywhere with Perplex City in the URL.

What you say, though makes sense. There will be a lot of repeated information, and who really wants to look in multiple places for answers?

I propose a poll.

I tried to register on the new forum hours ago and have yet to receive my confirmation email... Dunno why.

I personally think the freedom of Unfiction is nice. The rules of the "official" forum seem a bit strict. I think the biggest benefit of the official forum will be to drive people here.

Now if the official forum had 72dpi PNG scans of all the cards that would be nice Very Happy

Either way, it looks like PPC is going to be around for a LONG time, so having forums under their control is probably a good investment for Mind Candy.

My vote would be to just let things happen organically. We already have a lot of inertia built up behind the Unfiction card forums, and it will be difficult to say "okay guys, stop posting here, sign up at Perplex City's official forums and post over there." Similarly, it will be difficult to just transfer the threads from here to there.

Personally, I am going to continue to monitor and post here--entirely for the reason that we have RSS feeds and I don't have the time to manually check forums all the time. I will manually check over there every once in a while (especially if a link to something important gets posted over here *hint* *hint*.) If more people start using the official forums, I will re-evaluate the way I am doing things, but the lack of RSS is pretty much a deal-breaker for me.

Me too, apparently. Right after posting that I went and tried to log in and it let me post. Guess the board isn't completely configured yet Smile

This isn't really the sort of thing that needs a poll, IMHO. If people keep posting about the puzzle cards here, those forums will remain. If they stop posting entirely, well we'll probably collapse them into an archive of sorts. Anyone is free to decide to continue or stop posting individually.

As for moving threads to their forums, that becomes problematic due to copyright issues. I have no problem with allowing threads to be copied over wholesale, but uF doesn't own any individual's posts. In order to transfer these forums, we would need specific permission from every person who has posted in any of the threads. This would include any anonymous guests who have posted and there is no guarantee we could track them down.

It's not just me then! I spent the last 15 minutes looking for an RSS link on the new forums and didn't find any. I thought the little "assistant" window would be ok, but it doesn't seem to be working right since all the messages from today show up even though I've read them all.

I'll second the motion to add RSS to perplexcityforums Smile

I think the perplex city forum would be a good place to start to post solutions and to bounce ideas the same as here, but to totally ignore this site for puzzle cards would probably not be for the best.

The Unfiction forum is a wealth of resources and a lot of effort has been put into the puzzle card section. I agree that it contains a lot of waffle and duplicate information but to totally disregard its usefulness would be foolhardy. I suggest leaving the forum open and using it to gather the majority of the information (and waffle), but also post the more important information on the new forum. Hopefully this would allow the ease of discussing puzzles on the unfiction forum while conveniently having all other related information a simple click away, resulting in having all superfluous information filtered out and only the necessary posts in the PCForum.

But to make my opinion clear, the new PCForum is there and clean and should be utilised. I like the design, especially being sub-divided into topics about individual cards, a large improvement on the organisation of this forum. If it is possible that this organisation will prevent the current difficulty in reading this forum (being a puzzle in itself) then I say go ahead and use it solely!!!!!

EDIT: OK! Just went over and had another look and to check out any posts. So far there is little to see, but one particular category did have 6, namely red card #14 "Cracked Crackers". I was shocked to see the only topic in this category was on swaps! I assume the first post was in reference to a duplicate of this particular card, but the rest had nothing to do with it!! This is the exact thing I think we should keep the unfiction forum for, to keep irrelevent information separate and prevent flooding of posts.

I agree that the lack of RSS over on the forum is a problem. I vote that we keep things as they are at the moment over here and see how the forum pans out.

The fact the each card has its own section is nice.

The main problem I can see with the PCforums is the lack of general topics that trading etc. would fit into.

Surely MC not discouraging trading?!

Without this people will end up just posting things wherever, especially those unaware of the boards over here where the threads already exist.

Regardless of which boards are used for the card puzzles themselves, I feel posting other card related topics, be it trading or meta topics spanning multiple cards will need to continue on these forums unless the PCforums gain some new sections.

I asked Adrian this question at ARGFest, and he said (if memory serves correctly) that at this point he doesn't expect everything to move over to that board.

For players new to ARGs who find the cards at a game store, though, it makes sense for them to be able to have discussions over there. That being said, I'm going to stick over here for talk, since we've built this card forum. Plus, I hate needless redundancy. So those boards for the next few months will be dreadful Wink And here, as mentioned, everything's in one place. I was also under the impression that the forums really weren't going to be properly accessible until the solve function was intact, but I see I'm wrong..

I also don't like having top ten poster lists. It often encourages irritating post-whoring, and that's the last thing anyone wants in an ARG.

cards forums

Closing the forums? Stop posting here? Check more than one board?

You're joking right?

Yeah, though I can't wait to see all the new kids gumming up the works with their Forever Foe 'solves'.
