[Omnifam] AUG13 Call for help - Arcanum-Ultor

Hey guys, some of us in the Omnifam ARG could use a bit of help, if you can spare it... We're currently on a puzzle trail, and the latest one we have (the second) is boggling us all. Check it out here:

http://www.arcanum-ultor.com/pretznoki2.php

The numbers/letters change, and the following phrases will randomly appear over and around the puzzle, one at a time:

Patience is a virtue
21 square moves restores the order
Convert the curse to a bucket
Additive magic works well
Dig out the dutch poison
One is fat and one is not
Decompose the first of puzzle

The numbers/letters look to be hex code characters, but I haven't found anything that might decode yet. The "patience" phrase lead us to think that maybe the numbers STOP changing, but I haven't seen that yet. The "21 square moves" bit might point to sliding each colored block to a new position to put them in some kind of order, but again, not sure on that. The curse/bucket one? Not clear. "Dutch poison" is a kind of weed, I found, but I don't know if that's what we're looking for. Razz It might refer to an earlier mission in this ARG where we got a datacard sent to some of us via someone in Amsterdam. "One is fat and one is not" - might refer to some numbers/letters being bold, and some not. As for the last message, maybe something to do with the first blue box of the puzzle, or the letter "p"? Not sure (kind of like the rest!). So yeah, if anyone has seen something like this before, or has some insight, please let us know! Thanks!

PS - I know there's the Omnifam section on this forum, but when we contacted the organization we report to, they suggested finding some experienced puzzle solvers. In other words, no hint for us! So I wanted to reach out to people who don't know of this particular puzzle.[/url]

Re: [Trailhead/Omnifam] Help needed please! Stuck...

I'm no puzzle wiz, but I like a challenge; and this seems to be one. Smile

7. Decompose the first of puzzle

Just on first look, the above seems to be the directions to solve this one. I've added the numbers just for clarity.

1. Wait. Maybe it eventually stops? If someone reads the code who knows Java, maybe they can tell us if it will stop.
2. As you've pointed out, it does look like one of those slide puzzles. So my guess here would also be that 21 moves in the slide box, puts the puzzle in proper order.
3. A curse is a hex... a bucket.. Dunno So, yeah, convert from hex, I guess.
4. May have to add some numbers together... or it may be another play on words... or maybe an anagram.
5. No clue here, except that something might have to be eliminated or extracted.
6. As you've said, I think this is about separating the bold from the unbold.
7. Decompose is rot. So, I'd guess rotation Caesar cipher comes into play at some point.

The properties show it's called pretznoki2.php. I've only tried pretznoki1 and pretznoki3 and got 404's.

Well, that's all I've got. I'll keep trying.

Com'on puzzleheads. Let's get crackin' Exclamation Smile

Tis a quizzle.

http://www.puzzleworld.org/SlidingB...zles/quzzle.htm for example. Solve is:

A1236 63266 A4578 87588 A6623 A8857 A8821 46628 31286 64218 63A75 26814 2A318 642A6 6836A 2488A 66756 6753A 88428 8241A

apparently. So I guess do the first 21 moves? and take the state from there? Question

Oh man! Yeah, that's it. I'm not sure about the link you posted, but I kind of dug around from there to get to this link:

http://johnrausch.com/SlidingBlockPuzzles/quzzle.htm

That looks familiar! I'm playing around with it now... Thanks for finding that, strife!

OK, now this starts to make a little more sense - the moves restored the puzzle to the correct order.

Then, separate the bold & unbold series?

Convert the hex to bin(ary)?

Dig out the dutch poison = take out the weed? (No idea on this)

This is still going to take some time...patience is a virtue, after all. Sad

My $0.02

1: "Patience is a virtue" seems to just say wait for the end of the list of instructions, to me.

2: "21 square moves" has already been figured out, I believe

3: "convert the curse to a bucket"... The curse is obviously hex, as drizjr pointed out, but the "bucket"... There don't appear to be any obvious synonyms, but apparently it is a computing term, equivilant to a variable-thingy. So my feeling here is a hex --> denery conversion, not least because of the next line.

4: "Additive magic works well" - Add groups up... I have no idea how though. Presumably to get vaguely coherant numbers to do the next bit with Dunno

5: "Dig out the dutch poison" - dutch poison is a type/name of cannabis, or so Google tells me. They want us to get stoned?! Or, some relevant term for it means something here. THC, perhaps? There enough slang words for the stuff to fill a book Wink

6: "One is fat and one is not" To me this is like a Bingo call; simlpy, the number 10. Binary?

7: "Decompose" - ROT - "the first of the puzzle" No idea. Well know more when we get there, I suppose

FYI, one of the square pieces (6) moves 21 times in that puzzle...as long as I didn't count wrong.

Paulzilla -- I soo did not catch that ROT reference. Nice job!

Bucket might be "bit bucket"

A "bit bucket" used to be where the "bits" were put after being punched out of punch cards. More recent references to "bit bucket" point to /dev/null.

So, after that bit of history lesson, I'm pretty sure this indicates Hex to Bin.
I'm probably wrong though.

Does that mean you solved the quizzle and "restored the order"? I can't freakin' even get the quizzle worked out! I suck... I keep getting stuck. If you got it worked out, could you at least post an image of what the solved puzzle looks like - ie, the order of the blocks in their final spots? Thanks!

Slide puzzle after 21 moves

Does this help?
I used the first 21 moves from the solve that stifey posted above and got this. If someone with better skills could cut and paste the numbers inthat pattern, that would be great!

johnahue42: All is forgiven. Smile

UGH, i'm having trouble posting the pic...please stand by
