In most RPG's you succeed based on creativity and dice rolls. In an ARG you succeed with your puzzling skills and your ability to utilize the multiple talents of the group. In a large enough group, somebody will either have experience with a puzzle type, or have a unique enough way of looking at it to crack the code. It is the concept of the collective detective.
In RPG's focus is given on the characters behaving like main characters, accomplishing mighty deeds, the center of the action. In ARG's there is more satisfaction in succeeding as a group. Being included provides the rush as opposed to standing out.

well said Jonny10. I think this is one of the better bits I've read in distinguishing ARG and RPG.

Only in less sophisticated RPG's. The point of most advanced RPG's (even going back to AD&D) is to encourage teamwork. Alone, no single character stads a chance. they're good at certain things, not at others. Only when they work as a team do they realise their true potential. The real satisfaction when I roleplay is knowing that together the individual characters will become far greater than the sum of their parts - obviously, this holds true for ARGs too.
but hey, I'm getting off topic here.

I was lured into it by I love bees but I quickly switched to Urban hunt which is by far my favourite one so far. I worked on the one with the keys, i forget what it was called and then I just sort of quit after that. I couldn't find a game I could get involved with but here I am.

My first ARG was City of Domes (well fraction of an ARG.) I find the whole concept fascinating, both conceptually and on a puzzle solving level. I just received my Orbicon brochure and am looking forward to becoming involved and helping where I can.

just sending a 'welcome to unFiciton' out to all Canadians here...
I was heavily involved in ILB too, but for some reason nothing really captured my attention as much as that arg... I tried PPC, but it got so non-linear that it was too much work trying to keep up with everything that was going on , so I just lurk now. I was of OurColony for a while, but that wasn't as much of an arg really. I'm hoping Orbital Colony pans out into a good ol'arg along the same lines at ILB
So I guess of the two args I was most involved in, they'd both be associated with MS

My first ARG was Ilovebees. It's reach was even able to reach out to South Dakota, even if it was just through a payphone.
After that, I participated in the Synagoga subgame of Wildfire Industries.
Since then, my own concerns have pretty much kept me out of the ARG scene, but now I'm trying to return - to fit it all in.
I named my rock Legba - after the Vodun Loa that guards the borders between various worlds, and crossroads. Not exactly a rock-based theme I know, but considering that one might say Orbicon and its station stands at the threshold between Earth and space... eh, I feel it fits.

Hey everyone, my name's Lauren (don't be fooled by the UN, it's an Ocean's 11 reference). Yet another one of those new kids to ARGing-- this is my first, and honestly, I'm already a bit overwhelmed. I'm trying to get into the swing of things, though.
I first got interested when I saw ourcolony.net and someone had to explain what it was to me... then, I went on and wikipedia'd all the stuff about ilovebees.com. I got interested, and here I am.
Looking forward to it.

I'm a complete newbie to ARGs. I hope to slowly become more involved as I gain experience.
