A Summer Glau fansite states that they were alerted to the video's existence by one "Paul Probo." Kind of a weird name, one that brings up nobody when Googled. We've seen unofficial sites brought into the viral marketing fold before... perhaps this is a clue?

Well, as someone brought up on another board, URL is in that name...So...Maybe take out the URL and try and Anagram it? *grasping at straws*

EDIT: Which comes up with only four choices..

A BOP OP
ABO POP
BOA POP
PAP BOO

All of which make no sense to me.

I tried looking through the .mov file with a hex editor and notepad, but didn't find anything. Of course I'm kinda in a rush since I'm leaving for work in about 5 minutes...

I also saved the JPEG from iFilm.com and opened it up in notepad, but didn't find any hidden text. Again, that doesn't mean it's not there, just that I didn't find it.

Anyone know anything about stenography in video files? Is this possible?

EDIT: Oops, I meant "steganography." I should've known better than to think so hard before having my morning coffee!! Wink

I wonder if the clip is a sort of Easter Egg, playing to the mystique of River's true abilities as demonstrated while under the "care" of the Alliance. (i.e. why they want her so badly)

I would hazard a guess that "Paul Probo" is part of the Firefly universe. Almost sounds like Pro bono.

Interesting crossover. Interlaced Reality as it were. Certainly the stuff of ARGs.

Here's hoping.

Paul Probo? All promo? I googled it up, and got two results in spanish, and probo' (last o has an accent over it) seems to be a word there. Maybe try searching P2P client with that name?

While not unheard of, it's virtually impossible to steg a video file. Well, I shouldn't say that... lets just say it's really hard. A more likely "steg" for this movie would be something hidden in one of the frames like the symbol in the first few frames.

I found a session416 website, but before anyone gets their hopes up - it was created (judging by the whois) by that theonetruebix guy that is on the Whedonesque site that Omnie linked to. Today, actually. Seems he also set up the Yahoo group.

Sigh.

Be it ARG or viral marketing, where's the fun if there aren't sites cropping up which drag people from "Ooh!" to "Ah, crap" in the span of a few seconds or less?

I heard a rumor, however, that there's a strong possibility that if Serenity does well, they might make another Firefly movie.

Anyone heard anything more definite?

Of course, what I really want is the series back, but multiple movies would ease my pain somewhat.

The original speculation was that the movie had to do well but not TOO well. The reasoning was that if Serenity does badly, we get nothing. If it does extremely well, the studios will milk the franchise for another movie. There was some ambiguous level of success in the middle there that had a chance of leading to the revival of the series. If the brand has enough value to be worth continuing but not so much that it'd bring in $200M with a movie sequel. That sort of thing. That was all from before the movie even started shooting, so I have no clue if that matches the current situation.

This middle level, I believe, is unattainable at this point. I think the contract with Faux ties up the show pretty tightly for the next 7-8 years. It's possible that those stupid bastards the executives at Fox might try reintroducing the show or sell it to Sci-Fi- but considering that the cinematography folk are all busy with Galactica I'm not sure if Fox can get them back, or if SF will want two shows with the same camerastyle.

I can only suggest holding your breath if you have a large life insurance policy with me as the beneficiary.

Don't mess with the Tam.

"Also I can kill you with my brain."

Eeep. Guess she wasn't bluffing.

If I don't miss my guess, it looks like the lab-coated man committed "suicide". When his left hand returns to the table, he drops what looks to be a scalpel coated in blood.

So, the question is... is River a teke or a pusher? Or both?

L.

Actually I think the current consensus is that the item dropped on the table is a pen (or some other type of writing utensil). River most likely thrust it into Mr. Labcoat's throat, given the blood on her hand at the end of the clip.

I've been trying to look for other clues in the video but haven't had any luck so far. I ripped the audio track and tried slowing it down, playing it backwards, etc. but to no avail. Also tried playing with the brightness and contrast of the movie to see if there was anything hidden from view but again, my efforts are thus far fruitless.

I'm not giving up hope though, there must be a clue in there someplace!! Confused

Also I was thinking a little this afternoon about the end of the clip. River says, "I can see you." - who does she see? The obvious answer is the people watching and recording her... or US... but I wonder, if she's in an interrogation or observation room, she could be looking into a 2-way mirror and what she's actually seeing is herself. We don't know at what point in River's "conditioning" this took place, so she could be conscious of two different versions of her personality. Probably isn't important, but I wanted to put that out there for y'all to chew on.

It has never been established that she is anything other than a reader. And I highly doubt (presuming, as I do, that this is an authentic and sanctioned piece of viral marketing for the film) that Joss would introduce some other ability in this format/context.
