Treasure Hunting books with prizes

Here's one coming soon:
http://www.maranatha-puzzle.com

The site states that within the book there is hidden a key which will unlock an ancient secret. The first to uncover the secret will win 1 million pounds (1.8 million US).

[Someone I know on another message board] sent an inquiry to the site and was told that yes, there is a key within the pages of the book, that the money was real, that there would be a winner and that 1/3 of all profit would be donated to charity.

The book is entitled: 'Marnatha Et in Arcadia Ego' and is due for release on October 13, 2005. They are currently taking preorders at the website above.

Oh, and this is another one, completely unrelated:
The Oracle: Lost in Time

The prize is a minimum of 1000 GBP (about 1760 USD) and rises with the sales of the book . i.e 10000 copies sold means the prize fund increases to 10000 GBP.

Here is a link to the website:

Oh wow! An ancient secret that references 'Et In Arcadia Ego'?! No way! </satirical excitement>

Another Holy Blood, Holy Grail rip off? Methinks yes....

"Maranatha and I am also in Arcadia?"

Someone mixing up their references? Confused

geez, what's going on today? If you don't have anything nice to say, why say it at all? Confused

Because I don't understand what it says in Latin. So I'm wondering what's going on with it -- i.e. whether someone is mixing up their references, or whether the weirdness is intentional.

According to the wiki "Et in Arcadio ego" is the title of two famous paintings by Poussin. Supposedly the painting was used in the Davinci Code and/or Holy Blood and the Holy Grail. Since Maranatha can mean Our Lord is Coming, I guess it sort of fits.

fixed the typo Rolling Eyes

Actually, it's Maranatha. Razz And depending on how it's parsed (maran atha or mar ana tha/marana tha) it can also be an imperative ("Come, Lord").

Which still doesn't explain to me how it makes sense.

"Come, Lord, even in Arcadia I am"?

"Our Lord is coming even in Arcadia I am"?

"Our Lord is coming even though I am in Arcadia"? Shocked Now that'd be interesting. Considering the ego in Et in Arcadia ego is generally assumed to be Death.

I may be wrong as I haven't read the book and only seen the cover and read the site, but I don't think it's supposed to be read as one latin sentence. On the site it says "Maranatha - Et in Arcadia Ego". Also on the book cover and site it appears that Maranatha is the title and Et in Arcadia Ego is the subtitle.

But who knows? Since this is a puzzle book I'm sure every sentence, word and piece of punctuation will be discussed in great detail and we'll find out soon enough Razz

Ah. That would make more sense.

Ah, obsessive-compulsive attention to detail. I love ARGs/puzzle trails/etc. -- I'm free to explore my OCD side. Wink

I like the way the title is written on the book; using the pigpen/royal cipher to write the "r" in Maranatha.

PS, I've pre-ordered a copy, as it sounds interesting.

That one sounds pretty interesting. And it talks about Nicolas Flamel! All this time, I thought he was a wizard from Harry Potter... Razz He made the Sorceror's Stone (Philosopher's Stone) and could do all kinds of alchemy magic with it. I guess he was a real life alchemist. Shows what I know...

stumbled onto this at "remote central"

Quote:
The words 'et in arcadia ego' have appeared many times in different places - in a painting by Poussin, an episode of 'Millennium' in which a miracle birth takes place, and another in an episode of Brideshead Revisited - and still nobody really knows what the original phrase without a verb actually means, other than something like 'and I am in heaven, paradise or arcadia' - and the real mystery at the heart of this is the identity of 'ego' - who, or what, could the 'ego' be referring to, and why are they suggesting that even somewhere like paradise, along with other realms, was not immune to visitations from whoever or whatever.

The book itself will be published, fittingly on October 13, the very same date that in 1307 saw the apprehension, and subsequent execution, of many Knights Templar across Europe, including their leader Jacques de Molay, all at the behest of Philip the Fair, and the then Pope, both of whom felt their power undermined by the Templars, and who wanted to learn from them whatever secrets they could extract. However, there is evidence that there might have been prior warning, as many escaped, by boarding a ship, or small fleet of ships, and taking with them the alleged Templar treasure - which I guess might well be a central theme of the book.

sounds interesting...
