Looking at the card again - the word CITY is written at the top.

Might this be the question?

The "Perplex" of PerplexCity is written in the same purple as the other cards (yes?) but it did make me wonder about masking the text to get the solution...like superimposing the Reimann function on the text, or extending out the two diagonal parts of the sigma onto the text, or...?

Y'know, it is possible that people who would put in a card based on Mornington Crescent would also be mischievous enough to put one in that genuinely was about one of the most difficult unsolved maths problems in the world. Perhaps this card is unsolvable. There's nothing in the rules to say that all the cards have to be solvable.

This would fit with

a) the premise of the story - perhaps the Perplexians have solved this problem already, and are curious to see if we can too

and

b) the mischief-making mindset of people who would lead us all on a wild goose chase and spend ages in the pub laughing about it. Laughing

Just a suggestion.

Using the zeta zeros to take one letter from each sentence (14th character, 21st character, etc) gets

rdlegtntg

which is ROT-11 for

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
cowpreyer

(a clue for "Beefeater"?)

Ok fine laugh =) But darnit that sounds like a clue to me, and look look!... the 5th character turns out to be the 'g' from the misspelled GFG Riemann. Out of a 1000 character story that's a pretty big coincidence...

Riemann

I don't know if any one else has suggested this but maybe the answer to this puzzle is the secret message which is created when you put all of the prime number cards together seeing as this card is all about prime numbers. Therefore you wouldn't be able to solve this card until all of the cards are released.

Card not up-to-date

I'm still unsure of what the question from the card actually is, although I do no that the problem has been updated since 2004 - mentioned at the bottom of the card.

As of Feb 18 2005, the largest known prime number is Mersenne25964951 which is 7,816,230 digits long.

No reason for this post though Smile

I just got my card in today and was wondering if anyones elses had a line running down it from top to bottom (it starts just over the 'M' in Riemann. Printing error maybe? It seems quite distinct.

Again, just noticed that the largest prime number was 7235733 digits long. Which seemed a bit dubious to me. On the other hand 7-2-3-5-7-3-3 are all PRIME numbers.

7235733 consists of:

7 prime numbers

2 x 7
1 x 2
3 x 3
1 x 5
All these figures are prime numbers. They add up to 30.

Does that make sense? Does that make any sense to anyone who didn't spend their time in maths looking out the window?

Does sound an odd figure, but it is correct, or at least it was in 2004. According to this page, the largest prime now is 7816230 digits long.

That all the numbers of the largest prime they quote on the card are prime themselves, is a nice point. And it has been suggested that maybe they are somehow a key to finding something about this card (maybe an actual question!).

mayhap the card uses RSA encryption... it reatures two large prime numbers (the numbver of digits in the largest prime, and the list of priems without commas) and two prime numbers are the keys for RSA encryption...

I just got this card today. In keeping with this theme, could it be possible we're supposed to name a *city*, that is 7 letters long, using a substitution cipher on *7235733*?

The word 'City' is *black* on all other cards, so far. I don't think it should be ignored that it *stands out* so white, or silver, on this one. A city in *which* country, though? Shocked

I know that seems too simple for a silver card, but look how hard some are making it seem, when maybe all the intentional *distractions* are all what's making it hard to solve. Does that make sense? Confused

Maybe they just want us to *think* it's $1,000,000 hard! Wink

(Interesting note: The name 'Riemann' is also 7 letters, a prime)

If anyone would like to know what the answer box looks like, here it is. The answer that is typed in on the screen shot, of course, is mine. Don't steal it because it took a lot of time and cheese to arrive at.

gotta be it

i was just reading this thread and it seems hutchy may be onto something here, if you look at the prime number cards they DO have those funny letter markings on them, im gonna go with hutchy on this one... we shall just have to wait until every prime number card has been released... or will we?

Well it says "show your proof," so maybe they really do want us to figure this thing out... (assuming they mean us to prove the equation mathematically)
