[HALO MOVIE] W00t!!! From Sci-fi Wire:

Halo Film Deal Sealed
Fox and Universal have closed their deal to make a movie based on Microsoft's hit video game Halo, with plans to release it in 2007, Variety reported. Universal will oversee the production and is handling domestic distribution, while Fox will take foreign distribution. The studios will split revenues 50-50 out of a shared pot, the trade paper reported.
Former Columbia president Peter Schlessel, who served as a Hollywood liaison for Microsoft, is producing. 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland was paid $1 million by Microsoft to write a script that met its approval. He'll now do a rewrite with studio notes, after which Universal will go out to directors.
Microsoft is guaranteed extensive consultation on the project, but won't have approval over any elements. Several employees at Bungie, the Microsoft-owned development studio that created Halo, will serve as Microsoft's creative consultants.
Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.
So, YAY!
On the other hand, this:

makes me a wee bit nervous, especially as I don't recall being all that impressed with the script for 28 Days Later . (Why don't they do it right and get a Bungie + Sean team to write it? Oh well.)
On the other hand, HALO MOVIE!!!!

Dispite some of the thing Staten has said before about the Halo Universe*cough*ILB not canon*cough*, this article did put to rest some worries about whether Bungie and Microsoft were going to settle for money over keeping strictly to the story.

I just thought of something...
If we manage to somehow turn Jackson on to ILB, it could become canon.

Umm... what does "canon" refer to in this context? I figure it means become part of the official Halo mythos but I'm not 100% sure of that. I gather this is an ARG term I'm not too familiar with.

From Wikipedia :
Quote:
In the context of fiction, the canon of a fictional universe comprises those novels, stories, films, etc. that are considered to be genuine (or "official"), and those events, characters, settings, etc. that are considered to have inarguable existence within the fictional universe. Usually items that are considered canon come from the original source of the fictional universe while non-canon material comes from adaptations or unofficial items. Generally, Expanded Universes are not considered canon, though there are exceptions which are considered near-canon.
So, while Bungie paid for the ARG to be created, they've stated that they don't consider the events that unfolded to be canon. Someone chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC, the only canon material that exists outside of the game or bungie-direct promotional material is the book trilogy .
