Good Times...

I took the day off as a vacation day, and hornswaggled what'ser name...pita something...into hitting the Berkeley axons. Why Berkeley? Well, since I was the one into it, and Berkeley was closer to my house. I had told her to come out a little late in the morning since I wasn't even sure if there was going to be anything interesting going on.

I mean...it might have only been dancing robots.

So, I picked her up at the Bart station, and we made our way to an axon at the intersection of University and Shattuck. It was there that we saw a very intent young man standing in front of the phone. It was Lt. Adam (aka Zudini), and I asked him if he loved bees.

I loved asking people if they loved bees. and having other people ask me.

This axon was easy and I believe Adam replayed the clip for us and the other beekeepers who arrived. It turned out that Berkeley had quite a group assembled.

The next axon was more complicated...it showed up as being in the middle of a short street with no payphones. At one end of the street were a couple of payphones in the sidewalk. At the other end and about a half block away was a library with a bank of payphones inside. Half of the group (led by a young woman with curly red hair) went to the library to wait, while the rest of us watched the outdoor phones. A nice tall dark fellow who appeared to be with the leader of the other group volunteered to stand at the midpoint of the two sets of phones to be signaled by the group who got the call and relay that information to the other group.

Oddly enough, the library was where the call came in. Smile

so the rest of us ran over and swarmed the library....and kind of startling the already slightly worried security guard. I did my best to explain the game to him, and I think he even had a listen. Or maybe that was some other library patrons...I remember that someone outside of the group had a listen.

I believe I met missphinx for the first time that day.

I had spent several hours the previous weekend scouting this location, but went on a sunday, when I believe the library is closed. I never thought the phone would be that far away. I really enjoyed the scouting. Pita and I later went on a search in downtown SF for the axon that later was the first to be officially removed from the list. That was when I met ceantari, darkforge, mazian, and RangerD.

So much fun. I really feel bad for the people who couldn't answer any axons. And I don't think I will ever understand how people got sick of them. Of course, running around downtown SF and Berkeley was definitely an adventure. Maybe going to the one phone in the mall wasn't so much...

I don't think I will probably be able to do this again. Unless they wait until I re-enroll in college anyway. so I suggest rollout in one more year. Don't want to rush things, you know. Laughing

hm. a long post by ariock...have we gone back in time?

can't help it...
I've got a decent setup with the transcriptions and audio in an easy to follow, flowing order at www.thebruce.ca/ilovebees/TheAxonPlot.asp which can be downloaded in order.

Also, at creepy.thebruce.ca, the "Axon Week" chapters are narrative versions of the audio, where each scene is downloadable as an audio (that is, each break within a 'subject' separates a scene - eg, in a Jan subject, there may be 3 scenes, but they released the full Jan subject as one audio - I'm splitting the scenes into individual mp3's so that scenes can be crossed between subjects). If that's not confusing Wink

I'll also be setting up an index page to download the scenes separately in full, in order, rather than going from chapter to chapter in Creepy... Smile

and FYI, yes, there will be an update tonight Very Happy heh

One year ago today....payphones rang.

I knew a thread like this would pop up. It's great to see some familiar names again. Smile

Here's my quick token "first axon" story:

One of the five San Francisco axons appeared to be about two blocks from my office. How could I have been so lucky! I hopped over there in the afternoon and guarded what looked like the closest phone to the gps coords. All of a sudden some guy on a bicycle (syfer) rolls up and shouts, "beekeeper!?" Taken aback I reply in the affirmative. I guard this phone, he guards another set of phones, and.....no ringy. We went back the next couple of days with no ring, and finally on that friday compiled a crack commando team of over 10 people. Those I met for the first time there included ariock, pita, addict, ceantari and others. We covered about 4 square city blocks, including payphones in building lobbies. And still no ring. The axon we were hunting ended up being the very first axon to be canceled. Smile

I took phaedra's suggestion (thanks!) at calling Dana's voicemail.

So many emotions, all at once.

Took a trip down memory lane today.

The 1st Boise phone had the # wrong on the payphonedirectory.org list. Once we got it corrected there, it was answered every week. That's where we took all the photos with Lt MadCow in his mjlornir armor etc. I stopped by this one 2 days ago as it was on the way to mail off the last of the ILB DVDs that were in my possesion.

Location #2: This is the phone that matched the coordinates exactly. It is part of an old abandoned gas station and we had almost 20 people there the first day to answer it (of whom I only ever saw Lt MadCow ever again). It is about 50 yards from the phone in the pizza hut that did ring and scared the poor pizza hut girls. Later to be the phone that was answered weekly by the Pizza Hut manager who eventually became Lt Furious Jack.

Final Boise Location: The infamous weephun-turned-in-the-Sleeping-Princess-from-here phone. Originally just the middle phone rang, but in following weeks all 3 started ringing (usually within about 15 minutes of each other ... thanks PMs Wink). This was also the location where I called the phone on the right and got some random passer-by to answer the middle phone the week no-one could make it.

Crazy times, good memories.

In addition:

My first attempt at an axon was the first week out near Paradise Valley (but not near enough to be out of a sea of creepy strip malls.) I still swear it was the phone at the bowling alley, since it was the only one we could find that accepted incoming calls, but I guess it eventually became consensus that the correct phone had long since been ripped off the wall at the gas station or something.

My first enhottenated axon was on September 11, 2004 in downtown Tempe, on the southeast corner of Mill & 7th. A buff, jock-looking guy who was nevertheless familiar with the Halo canon, including the books (!), had toted along his cheerleader-esque girlfriend, who of course thought we were all batshit insane. Bob (Cmdr Pegasus) was there as well, but I got the honor of answering the phone. Nothing like muttering "Apocalypso" into a phone on 9/11 in the middle of a crowded urban area. But we got a recipe3 axon (alt_burgundy) live all by ourselves, my second-proudest moment of the whole game Smile

I never made an axons either (curse you assembly plant!!) however, This is right when I joined up, and I've been an ARG fan ever since.

Dear Bungie and 4orty2wo,
You are my heroes, forever.
