Jan would never care if someone thought she looked fat. She'd just take off their face, and then go out for some pumpkin ice cream.

something occured to me, you'd think that Mellissa/Durga would split part of herself off to help Jan and the 1.1's (she takes care of her crew, afterall). but WHO could ever hope to come close to Kristen's incredible performance?

/CJ wonders if we just ask reeeeeeeally nicely Laughing

As the story goes, the main reason Kevin Morales wanted Jan along was because she had a access to Durga. Any 1.1 story really should have Durga along. I dont think that Durga would be able to split herself at will, unless AI's are able to copy themselves, i dont know about that part of the Bungie universe.

Correct me If i'm wrong...
But Durga did Copy herself in ILB.
At chawla base, she "copied her primary data structure" inside of the chawla base firewall.
There was also a refference made by Jan that there were two running copies of durga, "Outside, sane Durga; inside crazy one... "

So it can be done.

Back in the day, when this idea first hit the waves, we did consider approaching Kristen... But I'm not sure how polite it is to ask a VA of her calibure to give her services free of charge.

But then again, it can't hurt to ask, if we ask politley enough..... can it?

Of course she wouldnt care, same as a smart man would never seriously say that she did look fat. its called (less than) witty banter!

also, pumpkin lattes are back at Starbucks. Made me think of Jan.

I don't know if Rendon or Incit still have chat logs from when we originally started working on this, but there were some good ideas that you guys might want to look at. If I can pull some time together I would be glad to help out, looks like this has more support than last time so it might actually happen!

(Bar required disclaimer: I am not a licensed lawyer and this is not legal advice and you would be a fool and a Communist to think it is.)

Short course: The answer based on the law is that it is a violation of a half dozen federal statutes. The answer based on empiricism is that you'll be fine.

Anecdotal evidence, which of course you'd be a fool and a Communist to rely upon Razz , but I have actually seen some fanfic sites get cracked down upon, and it appears that usually what happens is the Big Ebil Corporation's Nasty Lawyers send you a little cease-and-desist letter and, providing you take down the fanfic, that's the end of it.

The point being, even if we did something like this and it did come to the attention of Microsoft, and they didn't like it and did decide to crack down on it, it's not like they'd sue us. They'd just tell us to get rid of it.

Also, however, IANAL.

Tim Buckley, author of webcomic Ctrl-Alt-Delete, recently put the smack down on a kid on his message boards who adapted the comic strips into a film for his high school video production/theater class. Even though they were done as a tribute for a project and not for a profit, there were still legal problems because the guy put them out on the web. the idea being that it would hurt future intellectual property if CAD were to ever be adapted as a film or cartoon.

maybe this isn't such a good idea, as it might actually HURT the chances of these characters getting resurrected sometime in the future Sad that being said, i'd definitely be up for participating in a machinema, ILB related or otherwise

if we'd like to do a story of the 1.1, fan-fiction might be the better route as it would a more limited audience (and really, who would CARE but us?) and there wouldn't be the limitations of not seeing the characters outside a Mjolnar suit

I think you all are just plain silly about the leagl issues and ramifications of doing something like this.

1. We are not the first people in the world to think of using Halo to make movies and stories. it has been widly done. I think that Bungie recognises this as a benifit to the games and general intrest in the stories than something to really worry about.

2. We may have a little over confidince in our ability to make a machinima SOOOO good that it threatens the very existance of anything that Microsoft or Bungie might want to do. I say if you want to do it, do it. Stop worring about what the big bad corporations are going to do. Im pretty sure they dont care. ILB was a fun ad campain that they did and are done with. Now we can have fun with it.

3. you people think too much sometimes. but I love you.

Well, while's I'm not a laywer, That's likely (optimism?) to change in late October, so thinking about this, and researching it is what I do. Information about the agreement that MS/B came to with the RvB guys is scattered, but it was anything but lasse faire. The concern is not making something go great that it displaces revenue, but rather something so bad it tarnishes the brand, or so permissive that the courts will refuse to enforce their IP when they need to use it.

there's also a distinction between using Halo as your medium, and using Halo/ILB characters in your cast

Times article on machima

For what it is worth, this is a quote from Clive Thompson's NY Times

article on machima
(this link is to his website, not the times so you don't have to login to read the article)

Quote:
PERHAPS THE MOST UNUSUAL THING about machinima is that none of its creators are in jail. After all, they're gleefully plundering intellectual property at a time when the copyright wars have become particularly vicious. Yet video-game companies have been upbeat -- even exuberant -- about the legions of teenagers and artists pillaging their games. This is particularly bewildering in the case of "Red vs. Blue," because Halo is made by Bungie, a subsidiary of Microsoft, a company no stranger to using a courtroom to defend its goods. What the heck is going on?

As it turns out, people at Bungie love "Red vs. Blue." "We thought it was kind of brilliant," says Brian Jarrard, the Bungie staff member who manages interactions with fans. "There are people out there who would never have heard about Halo without 'Red vs. Blue.' It's getting an audience outside the hardcore gaming crowd."

Sure, Rooster Teeth ripped off Microsoft's intellectual property. But Microsoft got something in return: "Red vs. Blue" gave the game a whiff of countercultural coolness, the sort of grass-roots street cred that major corporations desperately crave but can never manufacture. After talking with Rooster Teeth, Microsoft agreed, remarkably, to let them use the game without paying any licensing fees at all. In fact, the company later hired Rooster Teeth to produce "Red vs. Blue" videos to play as advertisements in game stores. Microsoft has been so strangely solicitous that when it was developing the sequel to Halo last year, the designers actually inserted a special command -- a joystick button that makes a soldier lower his weapon -- designed solely to make it easier for Rooster Teeth to do dialogue.

"If you're playing the game, there's no reason to lower your weapon at all," Burns explained. "They put that in literally just so we can shoot machinima."

Crossposted (sorry i didn't know this thread was here lol):

Anyways, i'm down with a ILB machinima series.

I like the similar Icon/Coloring idea but the gamertag thing only comes up when you scope on a person.

A WORKAROUND for this is to use XBCONNECT from xbconnect.com.

This allows us to use any name we want (Profile names) and also perhaps shoot some scenes using Halo 1 and the old Mjolnir Armor....

And Yes, headsets DO work over XBC (if the game supports System link Voice, like H2. H1 does not, so it would be voice'dover. We could use a PC VoIP like TeamSpeak or Ventrilo to communicate.)
