It's registered to The Concept Farm (fair warning, it's one of those reaaaally annoying flash sites), which seems to be an advertising firm.

Also, the whois for instituteforhigherliving.com mentions agency.com, which says it does "interactive marketing campaigns." Miller Brewing Company is listed on their "clients" page. I'm not terribly clear on why a beer company would be doing interactive marketing for a book that's targeted towards a fairly young audience, though. Clicky for description of what agency.com did for Miller in the past. I'd guess that maybe what we have is a leftover domain name or something, but I don't really see how a domain like instituteforhigherliving.com would fit into that campaign. Also, it ran in 2002, and the website was registered in 2003 (ETA: wait, didn't the book just come out in April 2005? Was the Institute mentioned in previous books?). So, are we sure that the domain is related to the book? Is there some connection between Miller and the publishers?

On the other hand, it would seem too coincidental for the domain not to be related to the book, since the blog mentions that they're trying to hack into the institute's webpage, and that is the exact name of the institute. (I mean, I haven't read the book, but it is, right?)

In conclusion, I'm confused.

Umm okay.. well I've been holding back basically because i'm not sure how much of a game this is, and if I go ahead with what I have than we are hacking an actual live server, not just the web pages..

It wouldn't be too hard for anyone who knows how to use nmap to check out that institute's IP... look at all the fancy stuff you can find, and access them (not necessarily with a web browser, there's a very interesting service there..)

Needless to say I need a username and password.. but I'm not willing to read the book, the blog, or anything else to figure it out.. and i don't want to announce what I've got to the other group cuz they might bust up a real server which is not a game.. but maybe they already know?? aaaah....

Maybe the thread from Various and Sundry should be moved up here instead of using this new one? It'd make discussion easier, and it probably does belong more in this forum, for all that we don't really know what this is exactly. But, hey, that's what News and Rumors is for, right? Mr. Green

Just wondering, But where is this?

(The first photo)

http://www.wingkidsarereal.com/sightings_photos.html

P.S. Whats with the large gap at the bottom of some of the pages?

Is that just a coincidence or does it hide something?

P.P.S Do any of the photos actually look real to you?

Actually, all of them except the latest two. That one seems edited, because it really looks like a winged kid. On the rest of them I just see birds or planes...

I'm not really sure why I'm guessing, but the first one seems to be maximumrideSPLATgmail.com. Rolling Eyes

e-mail address

Whatever it is, it's a school address. I'm assuming this since it ends in "u" and the only extension that I can think of that ends in "u" is .edu. But atleast we have MRs' address.

The context here is the kids are on the run from the "School" and the "Erasers" (other wolf like kids that work for the school as henchmen). Maximum Ride is the name of the girl who is basically their leader, I think she's 14. So anyway, they are genetic experiments, winged kids and what not and they basically escape to capsulate it and are on the run, went to NY and are trying to find a place called the institute for higher learning. Max hears a "voice in her head" that tells her things and sends her images. The voice basically speaks in riddles. Oooook so, the voice tells max where to find an ATM card (winged kids have no money Wink) but the caveat is she needs to figure out the password to use it. This is the only real mention of a password in the book. Here' s a caption.

"So do we have money? I hope?" the Gasman asked as we passed a vendor selling Polish sausage.
"Maybe," I said, pulling out the bank card. What do you think?" I asked Fang. "Should we try this?"
"Well we need money, for sure," he said. "But it might be a trap, a way for them to track where we are and what we're doing."
"Yeah." I frowned.
Its ok Max. You can use it, said my Voice. Once you get the password.
Thank you, Voice, I thought sourly. Any hopes of you just telling me the freaking password? Of course not. God forbid anything should come easily to us.
We had to have money. We could try begging, but we'd probably get the cops called on us ASAP………Taking a deep breath, I swerved over to an ATM. I swiped the card and punched in "maxride."
No Dice.
Next I tried our ages: 14, 11, 8, 6.
Wrong.
I tried typing "password."
Wrong. The machine shut down…..
I tried the first initial of all of our names: "MFINGA." Nope
I tried "School" and "Maximum."
It told me to call customer service.
Farther on, I keyed in "Fang," Iggy" and "Gasman."
In the next block, I tried "Nudge" and "Angel," then on a lark I tried today's date…..
Angel looked up and said "Why don't you try 'mother'?" ……..
Fang and I exchanged looks, then I slowly swiped the bank card and punched in the numbers that would spell out "mother."
WHAT KIND OF TRANSACTION DO YOU WANT TO MAKE? The screen asked.

The last page of the book has a "hand written" note that says;

"Remember what I said at the very beginning?
Now, I am giving you a choice:
You can put the book down now-
but you'll just have some of the story.
look other places for more of it.
Dig even deeper, and you could become part of it.
The web of answers is out there.
If you can find the portal.

And be careful. And don't say I didn't warn you.
Max"

The next page has www.maximumride.com

The book is obviously left very open ended as well.

I should add that I got this book a month or 2 ago and it is still in hard cover as far as I know so if this is a arg it might actually launch when it goes soft cover. As of now its either VERY shortsided to leave that type of ending only to promote the books website or it'f going somewhere.

Can we get a merge? I'm getting confused Smile And would rather have all of this in News & Rumors cause it seems worthwhile.
