Main Entry: cringe
Pronunciation: 'krinj
Function: intransitive verb
Inflected Form(s): cringed; cring·ing
Etymology: Middle English crengen; akin to Old English cringan to yield, Middle High German krank weak
1 : to draw in or contract one's muscles involuntarily (as from cold or pain)
2 : to shrink in fear or servility
3 : to behave in an excessively humble or servile way

Yes, I understand this is in the in Console/Video Game Discussion forums now, and if I don't like it then I am not forced to read it. But I am so assiduously debased by the professed mediocrity of human intelligence; I cannot help but cringe when I come across this absurdity. I believe it is God's intention to humble us, by forcing us to live amongst idiots. The human mind is such an extraordinary device, capable of reaching supreme echelons of deduction, yet ruthlessly marred by the inanity it can also produce.
Life—or the diminutive fragment of it made available to us—is a superfluity of erudition ripe for our picking. Even so, the less capable of us elect to deluge their awareness with hogwash. Should you be capable of understanding these notions, then please look up to the sky and praise the Lord for favoring you amongst the herd, and granting you the supremacy of comprehension, while in its place the remnants have only gained the untoward ability of degrading their senses by perceiving faces in the trunk of a digital tree.

Enough with the harsh flaming! There is nothing else to do with this but take wild stabs in the dark with a giant pitch fork. Go flame your mallows... and toast... but in a toaster.

I must be mistaken, I thought the intent was to share ideas and information in the hopes that collectively we could solve the task before us. If you can't see the figures in the base of the tree then how about posting why you think the observation is incorrect or invalid.

Fact is I have now shown over 20 people these figures in the base of the tree and almost every one of them has trouble seeing them until they know what to look for. I found yyz's post very helpful in explaining this.

I suggest you go back and have a better look at yyz's post.

Hmm? I don't see any harsh flaming, that was my personal opinion. Opinions sometimes hurt people's feeling, in that case they shouldn't be on the Internet.

Everyone has a right to post their specs and share their ideas here, please by all means continue to analyze this and post as much as you want. But I have just as much right to nag and whine about this crap. And I will continue to do so until there is a rule against freedom of expression in this thread, or when this thing dies the death it so rightly deserves.

But don't suggest that this is a flame war because we wouldn't allow that to happen on these forums. No flaming; no hurt feelings... please.

If anyone really want to understand why I despise this origen thing, then please send me a personal PM or come to #unfiction and we'll discuss it over a nice cup of pear juice and rabbit cake. But don't respond here, because I will ignore you for fear of really writing back with a harsh flame.

EDIT: Look, guys, bottomline is just do whatever you want here, I'm sorry if I bothered anyone.. your spec is valid and I hope you enjoy this game.. I was wrong to barge in and I won't interrupt this discussion anymore Smile apologies.

I never thought you were flaming, I just thought you weren't contributing anything meaningful. Dunno

Okay, so in the interest of digging the signal out of the noise, and hopefully ameliorating people's desire to engage in tapinosis, and to avoid annoying Scrappy...

A SUMMARY

BEGINNING, WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT ACTUALLY BE A RABBITHOLE

In the Beginning, there was the Tree and Rabbit on the OrigenXBox360 site. There was also a barely-visible countdown to September 27th. There was also a picture that had "origen" written in white on the tree's leaves. The domain was registered to Microsoft. It was suggested that there might be a connection with X05. It was also suggested that "Origen" might be a contraction of "Oriental Generation." September (or October?) 27th seemed too early for the release of the XBox 360, which is rumored to be planned for November.

There was also some weird text at the bottom of the page:

Page wrote:
During the build up to the race there will be 1,000+(i think) London wide(?), running clinics, nike(?) swat team(?) that turn up, morning (gyms), lunchtimes (tube stations), evening (tube stations), theyll look after your bags, split the group up into varying standards, give advice, and then go on runs.

It was suggested that this might somehow be connected to RunLondon.

It was spec'd that the bitemarks appearing in one of the apples were part of an MSN Messenger silhouette.

One of the fonts used was called "Magritte," leading to speculation as to whether there might be clues involving the painter.

DEVELOPMENTS

The camera angle appeared to change slightly, or the rabbit began to move around the tree. Some of the leaves took on a yellowish tinge.

It was noted that the rabbit appeared to be on a stick, so perhaps it was a target. Or a puppet. Someone who must have been there for the ILB PM chat suggested clay pigeons...HOMING PIGEONS!!! Shocked

It was determined, and reiterated, that the Ourcolony blog at Blogspot, which had apparently been claiming to have inside info, was a fake.

A presentation of Jane McGonigal's was analyzed for connections and determined to be OOG.

Many people suggested that this had to do with the XBox360 "surprise" announcement in Japan, but differed as to how, exactly, it connected. Someone posted a pic of an XBox360 advertisement that had been painted on the side of a building in Japan.

Because of the green apple in the face, a connection with Magritte's The Son of Man was speculated. Someone pointed out that the XBox speaker at a game conference in Leipzig was wearing a green shirt with a green rabbit and the website link on it, which was similar to what was done for OurColony. People spec'd a Magritte-Alice in Wonderland connection.

It was reiterated that the OurColony blog was OOG, prompting some to insist that only the origenxbox360.com site could be trusted. Others wondered whether to include the .org and .net sites.

Several news sources annouced a rumor that Microsoft is planning to open an XBox360 store in Tokyo, prompting many to wonder if this could be a promotion for the store opening.

MORE FRUIT

The tree got more fruit, with a deliberate "chunk" missing from it, or perhaps just a leaf covering part of it. Again, it was spec'd that it was the MSN Messenger icon (is MSN Messenger going to be involved with/accessible from the XBox360?) or perhaps the "Friends Online" icon from XBox Live.

In an effort to introduce some humor, Ehsan came up with a Wacky Theory.

Carlo210 came up with a real theory that is too complex for me to summarize, so I will just link to it.

Someone suggested, running with the Magritte idea, that the shadow of the tree looked like a cloud, and wondered if there were some significance hidden in the shape.

LATIN

In hoc spatio arbor noser floruit fecundus pomis Elysii ignoti quo in loco ludent electi, ab Originis angelis circumdati, which someone translated as "In this space our tree blooms abundant with the unknown fruits of Elysium, which will imitate in the place chosen, surrounded by the angels of Origen," appeared at the base of the tree.

The fact that angels were mentioned (angels, presumably, wearing halos) prompted some to spec a connection to Halo 3. Also, John 117 grew up on Elysium. The pros and cons of such a possibility were discussed, chief among them being that the launch date for Halo 3 has been rumored to be in December, if they are even working on it at all (as a quote that they were was later retracted). Although, apparently, Microsoft has repeated something to the effect that they will release Halo 3 when the PS3 launches.

Someone spec'd that there appeared to be a blurry apple in the rabbit's back leg. Someone else spec'd that the tree trunk looked like the Flood.

Bungie commented on the site, saying they didn't really know what it was:

Bungie wrote:
I got a lot of mail from folks about www.origenxbox360.com which as far as I can tell, is some kind of viral marketing thing, and maybe even an ilovebees style ARG. Thing is, that's all I know about it. I got the same info as you – six plums (that's what they look like to me) a stick man, an MSN Messenger icon and two rabbits. I think they might be hares. The only thing I've noticed is that if you switch between .org and .com, the image pops to the right a couple of pixels. I'm helping! And I swear, I really DON'T know what this is.

Someone who was at a conference said that the XBox 360 would incorporate MSN Messenger. There does not seem to have been any analysis as to whether the source was reliable.

Yardarm51, who lives in Tokyo, went and checked out the building rumored to be the store, and reported that there was no way it'd be ready to open on September 27 -- probably in November.

People continued looking for blurry possible faces in the tree.

NOW:

In the interests of keeping this thread somewhat manageable and comprehensible to people who come here looking for information:

1. If I have missed something you feel is important and can't justifiably be generalized into what I've already mentioned (i.e. don't tell me "You forgot to mention the clown face!" since I've discussed the spot-the-face game), please post and add it.

2. Search

Before you post your newest discovery. Please. Even if, theoretically, one deleted all the "Wow! Good job!" posts, and all the posts in which people posted info that had already been posted, and all the arguments about flaming, this thread would still be unwieldy. So in the interest of improving/maintaining the signal-noise ratio, one thing everyone can do is to make sure they're not duplicating something that's been posted a few pages earlier.

3. When you're quoting someone else's post, if that post is one of the posts with tons of huge pictures, unless you need to specifically refer to one of those pictures, please just quote the part of the post to which you're responding. People probably don't need to see the pictures over and over again, and it just means you have to scroll a lot longer to get to the actual response.

Okay. Smile I now return you to your regularly scheduled wild speculation.

Damn fine sum-up, Phaedra. I would just urge additional caution regarding the .org and .net sites.

The Google group that the .org site pointed to was created (after appearing on the .org site) by a user/player and decimated due to a ruse perpetrated by a fake-PM named Sarge. If it wasn't OOG, the PMs would have had a tighter reign on it. Also, a number of players tracked down Sarge to his Yub.com account. His real name is Ray/Rainero Ubillus. The purge of the Google group was engineered to hide his identity.

Also, "Oriental Generation" is a bit offensive since the word "oriental" refers to things not people. Generation, while used in the technology field occassionally, more often refers to people.

That's my two-bits. Thanks again for the sum-up!

No need to apologise, everyone has a right to be heard and as I have already stated I never thought you were flaming anyone. As a matter of fact I had a huge laugh over your previous OMG post so please keep posting. Laughing

Okay. Smile I now return you to your regularly scheduled wild speculation.

Nice summary. For the record, everything I have posted thus far is speculation and I am only looking to share the information so that others may be able to assist in proving and/or disproving ideas.

Another thing I'd like to add: If someone claims to be part of a viral marketing campaign (key word: marketing) and wants you to keep everything a secret, he/she/it is probably playing you.

Hey guys.. I just found this from the first ARG "The Beast"
(For the text that goes with it you can visit here and click the "Martin Swinton" link on the right.)

[spec] away to your hearts content.

Plese take note that this is a truly great attempt to pull all of your collective legs, this is actually from the ARG The Beast and if you try following it up, you'll get no information whatsoever about the origenxbox360 website.

Now that the Xbox 360 launch dates are announced, we can lay to rest any specs on early release in Japan.
