Naw, it's not so bad. They've established that real in-game contact will come from in-game domains (unless we get some in-game confirmation claiming otherwise, I suppose). So if it's @hotmail, it's not real. Pretty straightforward.

I sent this email to the hotmail address of steven mae or whoever. lets see if i get a reply.
Dear Mr. Mae,
I appreciate your timely response to my previous email. I just have a few questions for you. Firstly what is ABAES? Secondly Why would your hotmail account work and not your orbicon email account?
Also would you have any idea as to why I would recieved this email from Orbicon?
Dear Ms. Perkins,
It has come to the attention of Orbicon Corporation that there are some
individuals representing themselves as Orbicon Employees.
Please note that all correspondence from Orbicon Employees will arrive
from an Orbiconcorp.com address or related sites owned and operated by
the Orbicon corporation or its subsidiaries.
We stongly urge you to report any contact purportedly from an Orbicon
employee that did not originate from an Orbicon address.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Martha Crappert
Facilities Services
If you are not Steven Mae why would you waste your time and my time pretending to be someone you are not.
If you are Steven Mae I suppose you will have to do something to prove it because now I just am not sure who you are.
Curiously Yours
D.Perkins

September 25? On the Orbicon site, in Recent News, why is the posting about Steven Mae dated September 25? Is it Sept 25, 2004?

Vaporloft So Vaporloft is a completely different ARG? That would explain why the pages I found seemed so ARG-ish.
So should vaporloft be considered completely OOG from OC?
Why would BUDEEFLY automatically get a message from Martha Crappert (how would Martha Crappert know she had been in contact with an 'imposter')? Are we sure that steven_maeSPLAT hotmail.com is an imposter, or possibly:

maybe Steven Mae is trying to get info out without Orbicon knowing so he is using the hotmail instead of his company mail. And maybe orbicon is trying to find him, or what email he is using.
I'm so confused
I'll now stop trying to decipher the messages I found at vaporloft, and return to reality...I mean "alternate"...er...you know what I mean.

Okay, to address a couple of things.
1. Please, this is the thread to talk about the Stephen Mae email. Any other concerns about sites you've found via google or responses to the credit offer should be taken to another thread. This whole thing is confusing enough without bringing in total different topcis.
2. VaporLofts is another ARG. It is being dicussed over here . Considering the fact we have an in-game communication from the OC PMs stating that this "Stephen Mae" is an imposter, we can thus conclude that VaporLofts has no connection to Orbital Colony whatsoever.
3. I cannot stress this enough: This email from "Stephen Mae" is a FAKE. We have been told in no uncertain terms through the Martha Cappert email that this is a fake. I know how easy it is to start second guessing the email from Martha in an effort to rationalize the "Stephen Mae" coorespondence, but sometimes there is no vast conspiracy by the PMs. Sometimes trolls do try to wreck games and the PMs have taken steps to show that this is indeed the case.
Please, please, please stop trying to get confirmation of "Stephen Mae"'s identity via the Hotmail email address. All you are doing is giving this troll the attention he wants. If this was indeed the case that Mr. Mae was trying to communicate with us secretly, it would be unambiguous. We would receive his "secret" email/communication through this game and not through some other, unconnected source.
Due to the very nature of ARGs, it is way to easy for trolls to get a foothold on the game, simply by causing a bit of resonable doubt. When this happens, the only thing we can do is rely upon verifiable sources. The only verifible source we have at the moment is Orbicon.org. Any other information can not, and should not, be trusted.

i don't see why everyone is freaking about the emails. for all we know it's a real person who is simply taking advantage of his personal email in the game. googling, i found this quote:
Quote:
Tiffany and Steven Mae, newlyweds, arrived to Raleigh an hour and a half late from Atlanta after their honeymoon cruise from Florida was postponed.
"Our flight was fine. It just took a little longer than we expected," Tiffany Mae said. "There was just a lot of wind, a lot of rain, a lot of damage to other areas (in Florida)."
"It was kind of unnerving when we were in the room. The windows were shaking a little bit," Steven Mae said.
here's the link so you can see for yourself:
http://www.nbc17.com/weather/4912956/detail.html
so why don't we just relax, and stop blowing this up so much. if it is fake, it's just playing into his/her hands anyway. we just have to wait for these orbicon people to get moving. that is, if there are any of us left to even play the game by the time it starts.

A real person, named Steven Mae, who just happens to be playing two different ARGs at the same time, writing communication to players pretending to be two different in-game characters? Sorry, any one trying to pass themselves off as an actual in-game character when they are not gets the Troll label by me.

Oh, I have no doubt there are real people out there named Steven Mae. I just find it hard to believe they are actually playing this game and are trying to sabotage it.
The only reason I am "freaking out" about this is that I do not want people getting confused about this. Just scrolling up the page makes it pretty obvious that it got some people thinking about this. I am only trying to clarify things so that no one should be confused.

Mrs. Perkins:
I assume since you replied (against the wishes of Orbicon) that you are
not
one who adheres to rules very well. While this does not bother me, I
must
advise you to be careful when dealing with a corporation of this size.
You've already seen what they are starting to do to me, and I would
hate for
anything similar to happen to a seemingly caring person such as
yourself.
Please do not attempt to contact me anymore for your own sake.

Not your fault. You were just following up on a lead - which is what any good ARG player does. Any and all of the blame goes to the troll who thinks it's more fun to mess with other people than it is to find something more construtive to do.

Should we even waste our time? I'm not sure how much time we should spend solving this (since we think this guy is fake) but the row of characters above the text:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
all corresponds to the number line on a keyboard:
)@$#!%^$%)($*!^)$(*%^$*)%&!@^$*&%(*%$^*($!!%^!$%
translates to:
024315645094816049856480571264875985468941156145
I think that's right (might want to double check).
Not sure if/how this could be decoded (or if we should even waste our time), but thought I should share.
[update] Just a quick thought: could the "sm/dl" preceeding these codes be a clue as to how to decipher them?

"sm/dl" corresponds to the supposed initials of the troll:
Steven Mae & Djingo Labbat72 from the LiveJournal post.

@ rowan:
please don't think i was implying that you were freaking out. i think this is a clear message from someone to orbicon to get things moving, dammit. we have been waiting around for this for months now, and someone probably just got bored and tried to add some excitement. while i don't condone what they're doing, i think it's cool that people like budeefly have fun things to do, we just need to keep in mind that once the game starts, this topic needs to be dropped completely, you know?

Right... i'm ill for a couple of days and suddenly there's lots of action on the OC forums... figures
Anyway, I am locking this thread, as it will only further confuse people that are trying to follow what is going on. If you still want to participate in solving stuff that is connected with the fake e-mail, please check out the VaporLofts thread in the ARGs with Potential forum and see how far they've gone with that.
Oh, I've also split the two spaceelevator.com posts that were off-topic, and Rowan, thanks for jumping in there.
