[INFO]Personal File Puzzle

OK, I searched for this, so I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but trout me if I'm wrong here...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

OK, here's what I found ... in the personal directory for Ms. Schreber on Vaporloft's site, there is a file x.html. This file contains the following hexidecimal code:

0

So, I'm getting ready to analyze and try to figure out what base10 decimals this equates to, and perhaps from there ascii or some other code? Not sure ... but wanted to post to get other's input as well ...

PS - OK, it's official ... I'm playing this one ...

Actually, it had been mentioned before in this post, but as none of the orginal text was quoted (and the url hidden) it's not surprising that you didn't find it (or didn't recognize it when going through the thread).

The long strings of numbers are actually hex. You can read the decode at the first post. I'm not sure if we ever figured out what the smaller numbers were for.

Embarassed

Well, at least I can stop working on the code now ...

Thanks for the link. If this is Schreber's personal folder, and this is in there, ... perhaps she is possessed???

Since we never really talked about the actual numbers in that text, here's just something I noticed, maybe you can do something with it:

All the small numbers are in Base-16 notation, aren't they? Where it goes 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F,G? My use of Base notation in the old RAMA video game fails me right now, but this seems similar. I assume this because the first digit increases from 1 at a rate of 2 integers, and the final digit is 10, so the missing letter would be G = 16

I found a converter, and here are the numbers in base-10.

0 - 0
1E - 30
3C - 60
5A - 90
78 - 120
96 - 150
B4 - 180
D2 - 210
FO - 255
10E - 270

The only anomaly is "FO," which doesn't really follow the "+30" pattern. Could that be a point of interest?

I hope this is of help.[/url]

I don't know where to go anymore are we stuck on this or waiting for the PMs? Or is there anything suspiciouse that you think may have not been solved yet? I worked on the movie for a long time trying to get something from it. I don't have a background in sounds at all so am still having very little luck. HAHA, slow it down 90% and it's sounds really spooky with all voice almost gone and some ghostly sounds. Has anyone else had any luck finding anything new?

Doing a hex to ASCII conversion on the long strings gives the following text:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
many times
we have fallen
we, the angels
and the demons
many times
we shall be resurrected
by man's memory
and perhaps
his devices

like vapor
like shadows, or fog
something brings us
back to this place

where the world
turns round
and should end
yet still

gƒ persists.

Note that there's one non-standard ascii character in there. 94 could be interpreted as either "ƒ" or "Ÿ". Also, the sequence 0, 30, 60, 90... looks to me like degrees on a clock face. What that has to do with anything is beyond me...

Since we are analysing the hex bit:

F0 in hex is 240 and not 255, which makes the pattern whole again.

While those numbers are increments of 30, all of the lines have exactly 60 characters.
Personally, I don't think there's anything more to it (yet), but perhaps dividing them in half - or skipping every second - gives something new? It's not very likely to get two working codes from one piece of hex, I guess...

0xF0 is 240, not 255. In ASCII (using the old-school IBM PC character set), this is the equivalency symbol (like an equal, but with three lines instead of two.)

Edit: it looks like Abraxas posted at about the same time I did. The post wasn't there when I started typing! Don't trout me! Smile

OK, I sent off an e-mail to Anne ... let's see what type of response I get. Here's a copy of the e-mail I sent (if anyone is interested)...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Hey Anne,

I just wanted to drop you a note and tell you that I've been reading your blog over at LiveJournal. I am not a member yet there, so I couldn't leave you any comments.

Sounds like a real wierd place to work ... Vaporloft. Be careful...

On another note, I do like what you've done over on LiveJournal. Have you been able to find anything else out about Sarah Belton? Perhaps she had some personal info on Vaporloft's servers?

I did try to find any personal folders she might have had (like the one where you posted the scary video), but no luck. Also, please forgive me, but I was snooping around in there and saw the picture of your grandmother. You miss her very much, don't you?

Well, that's all for now ... hope to hear back from you soon!

Best Regards,

Dave Brandon

I will post any reply that I get.

Good call, guys. The only thing is that if you look at the strings again, the FO is not F-Zero (WOO FLYING CARS), but F-O, the alphanumeric letter. At the same time, you're likely right.

Hehe, you know you're need a new part to the ARG when you're flogging old puzzles for new info. Razz

Then all of those are letter-O, because they all look the same. Wink
If you want to "flog old puzzles" go for the one with the seemingly random words decreasing in length. Someone already counted the letters and wrote the numbers down. The only thing I notice is that some numbers appear several times - some words have the same length, that is - but my imagination stops right there.

If this has been mentioned before sorry, but I noticed in the Wiki that the only two users are called Kender and Bluetrident, and their user info just lists them as "A curious man" and "Also a curious man."

Dunno if that helps.

Also. Hi. Lurker unlurking.
