Where can I find info on developing ARGs?

I hope this isn't an annoying question, but I haven't been able to find any other boards on the forum that answer this question. Does anyone know of any sites that provide general information on setting up an ARG? I'd greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

You can find some information here at the Puppet Master Guide Wiki.

Although there isn't much on just getting started.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out. I'm not interested in starting an ARG, but I am a fan of puzzles and I enjoy serving as a puzzle/riddle master at times. So this could be helpful if I want to develop some more complex enigmas to tease my friend's brains.

In that case, you may want to visit the Timewasters forum.

(It's not actually a judgment call, by the way, just the name of the forum for non-ARGs. Wink )

Various members of the community frequently make puzzle trails to help entertain the community between ARGs. I'd suggest both visiting the puzzle threads of various ARGs in the archive, and looking at the puzzle trails in the Timewasters forum. That will probably give you the greatest amount of exposure to different types of puzzles in the shortest period of time.

Good luck! Smile

EDIT: Fixed URL tag. Thanks, Rowan! Smile

Hey pharmmajor! Welcome aboard dude!

Beyond what's happened here, the main thing I would reccomend is sit and watch for a while. (Not to say that it would be impossible to set up a game and launch and rock it out from day one, but it's much harder, IMO.)

So my best advice would be play at least one game fully through. Then ask yourself various questions and really probe yourself, regarding your response to the game.

Did I like the game? What did I like the most about it? Was there some convention that I could reproduce, but make better? What would I improve/change if it were my game? What was the focus of the game (characters? puzzles? plot? Red Herrings?)

And many many others. Write your answers down, and really think about them. Then, you can start wrtiting your opus, recruit a team to help make it happen, and then rock the ARG world with your masterpiece! Smile

I know that sounds really lame and trite, but I really think a lot of the games that fizzle out, or just don't connect well with the community are due to lack of connection with what makes ARG work well. And I think the best way to do so is to play the games for a long time, but with the intention of learning at every step. Ok, enough Mr. Miyagi for me... hope to see you around!

He's not interested in running an ARG -- he just wants to do some puzzles. For that, I don't think he really needs to play an ARG, just look at ARG puzzles and puzzle trails for examples.

There have been a number of people who have done puzzle trails, as Phaedra suggested check the timewasters section, and PM the person who did it.

Do a search for JMX (Jaded Media eXperience) - it held several puzzle trails over the years.

I know that there are several people around who are interested in that sort of thing.
