I had no sign earlier today. After talking to a buddy who thought it was related to how many characters you add to your quicklinks, I went on a mad list-adding-fest, doing all the characters in case I had missed any.

After finishing that, I instantly had a club. Make of it what you will. Perhaps because I was "clubbing" the quicklist add feature to death?

I have no one in my quicklinks, and I'm a club Confused (btw, I'm going to go and add about a thousand people there now).

Speaking of the Dead Man's Hand, that's the hand that's blood-spattered in the lower left corner of the Lobby window: black aces over eights with a five of diamonds as kicker.

It might be how many people have quicklinked YOU, not the other way around. Just a thought.

Only 4 people have quicklinked me, and I'm a club (as well, last night when I had only one person quicklink me it was a club). Confused

From here:

So, labelling the four player types abstracted, we get: achievers, explorers, socialisers and killers. An easy way to remember these is to consider suits in a conventional pack of cards: achievers are Diamonds (they're always seeking treasure); explorers are Spades (they dig around for information); socialisers are Hearts (they empathise with other players); killers are Clubs (they hit people with them).

I should probably finish reading this thread before I comment on this, but Bartle's Types. (Above) Are more about social groups and online gamers (mmo's in particular) then poker player stereotypes.

However, since the suits are dependent on our actions rather then how we play, I really like that this has been pointed out.

There is a book that boils down players into various styles... Which I will have to find... One moment and I'll edit this post I'm sure.

Right now, I'm a diamond.

That would be it.

tarok vs tarot vs cards

Tarot is orginally based on Tarok - the first "card" game.

Tarok has the original 4 suites, and when switched over to the "classic" deck we know of now, they removed the Major Arcana. The Major Arcana are 21 "archetype" cards and were a kind of trump card. Many people felt it made the game heavy having 5 different suites and eventually it was dropped to only the Minor Arcana or the 4 types we know these days in a deck.

However, the Major Arcana and Minor are still used for Tarot cards. It's possible that thedealer is playing a sort of "high priest" position, handing out info as we "earn" it. In a way, that's what is happening whether intended or not. That's how the Tarot work - they reflect life and archetypes.

I'll find a link to a good explination of the original game, incase anyone is interested. I used to play it and it's one of my favorite cards games ever. (I grew up on Saturday night poker and such) I'm having trouble right now finding a English site - as it's still rather popular in some German speaking countries.

Also - personality and card types. In the Tarot, each person's personal card is based on their personality. Swords are often strong, sometimes overbearing people with dark hair and dark eyes, who tend to be sharp tongues... as an example.

I'll see what I can find if people want more info.

Foudn something, and with pictures: http://www.pagat.com/tarot/dantarok.html

edit: if you notice, it states in the rules that the Joker is often designated by a star. Could this be a possible link to the "mark of the joker"?

I did some playing with the icon urls just now

http://www.lastcallpoker.com/img/icons/icon_unlock01.gif
through
http://www.lastcallpoker.com/img/icons/icon_unlock16.gif
are all different.

Progression goes: diamond, club, spade, 2 of spades, 3 of spades, etc up to ace of spades.

Looks like a leveling system to me, though slightly out of order perhaps?

edit: after posting I noticed that some 2 of spades have appeared on the leader board. I need sleep.

I think your right...

I've noticed that whever my icon is the diamond (rank one) and I click to goto thedealer's page, then back to my profile, my rank moves up to two (the clubs).

I don't know how to advance to rank 3 yet... Could this be because I only have two poker buddies? Maybe I'm just tired...

Also, we have found 12 characters, if we find a 13th we'll have a full suit... This probably doesn't mean anythning though...

...that might explain it.

[SPEC] If you get an account on LCP, you're rank 0, unsuited. If you do anything with that account -- quicklink people, play poker -- you're rank 1, diamond. If you go to thedealer's page (or any of the other card-pages? or a particular card-page?), thereby doing something associated with the ARG half of LCP, you're rank 2, club. (I'm not quite sure if this holds true or not, so I'd say this part is definitely SPEC. ElGameR said "whenever my icon is the diamond", though, so maybe there's a time element attached to these three?)

If you actually find a card yourself, you're rank 3, spade, and as you find more and more cards, you're rank 4 (2/spade) or higher. Judging from the Top Players page, the only spades are people who've found cards and all people who've found two cards are 2/spades, so I think this is less SPEC than the first three ranks. It might be possible to get spaded for other things, but so far all that's definitely proven is card=spade.

Unless anyone's found stuff to contradict the above?

I registered for the game yesterday. I have played a few games of poker and visited all in-game characters sites at least once (the ones we know of so far). And I am still a diamond.

There goes that theory. Smile Especially since it sounds like you've done more looking at the in-game character pages than I have (I think I've clicked through to each of them at least once, but I've only looked at a couple of the attached files) and I'm a club but you're a diamond.

I think the spade part is probably accurate, though. We haven't seen anyone with a spade who hasn't found a card, have we?

RELATIONSHIP TO STORY Different characters in the story have been labelled "cards." Do we think this means there will be 52 card-characters in all? Do they relate to various cards in the deck and their meanings/symbolism?

Funny, one of the characters is named Corazon, which of course is Spanish for "heart." Perfectly normal hispanic name, of course, but still an amusing choice.

- [SPEC] There are 39 card-characters (Clubs, Hearts, Diamonds) to be found.

- [SPEC] The old man who showed up in Lucy's apartment is the Eight of Clubs.

- [SPEC] The remaining 13 Spades are reserved for us - card hunters striving to become the Ace and Eight of Spades - in the Dead Man's Hand that Lionel "Lucky" Brown has dealt Lucy Brown.

Possible clues to support current speculations:

* "Every man is a card ..." at http://www.lastcallpoker.com/user/thedealer/txt_tipsfortheliving

* "I can't rest thinking maybe I dealt her the dead man's hand ... I'm hoping you can help Lucy, so I'm dealing you in." at http://www.lastcallpoker.com/user/profile.aspx?UserName=thedealer

* "It was the shoes that placed him for her—Italian, hand-made, size 8 or 8½" at http://www.lastcallpoker.com/user/andadaughter/txt_unwelcomevisitors/

* Ace of Spades is the highest rank for card hunters - http://www.lastcallpoker.com/img/icons/icon_unlock16.gif

Let me know if I'm over-analyzing Smile -- Lloyd
