I just think it has to do with the way Firefox intreprets certain characters. I've been seeing it a lot over at Vaporlofts as well. Nothing to worry about.

They're finger tabs - in a tabbed bible. They're at the top b/c it is genesis. He used the bible b/c in Germany during the war when he was there, it was the only thing he had to write on.

Is it just me, or does it look like a rather long message is written in capital letters on the reverse side of the first page?

Yes, I opened it up and here's what I can make out:
Line1:
Line2:
Line 3: _ WAS ___ ___ EACH OF THE (CHILDREN?) THE
Line 4: (hard to read 1st 1/2 of line b/c of text) HE EACH OF THE WATERS
Here's what confuses me: Why can we read the opposite page, but not the one it's written on? Old bible pages are tissue paper thin... so that explains why you can read it on a scan, but you should see both the front and the back.
As for why it's capatalized? Not sure. In older bibles the "word of God" is capatilized - new ones have them highlighted in red. But why would God say HE?

Hmm, will open it up in Photoshop when I get home and play around with it.
But:
Genesis wrote:
1: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2: And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters .
I think you're reading FACE as EACH (not hard to do, since F and E are differentiated only by a single line ).
I think it's just the Genesis text, with, perhaps, the first several verses capitalized.

I still haven't found anythign cluelike in any text. they use a lot more flash too. it seems like this is still in the straightfoward stage. i'm almost thinking we will have to wait for them to give us more clues. that way there is an even spread for newbies and for part time hobbiests to find out and get in. almost like an intentional delay.
it seems like the PM really want us to get good at poker. for whats to come. i wonder though. they seem to like different types of media.
I think that if there was something more with the characters the pattern would have more order to it. like a series of characters out of order or something.

It's also interesting that, in the "waters" picture, the girl is touching an 8 of clubs, while the man is touching a 9 of diamonds.
Maybe they're going for a strait.

i thought that too at first, but there's just not enough squiggle to get 2 letters
also, those 3 stones would be
Queen of Hearts, King of Hearts, Jack of Hearts

I think the first Johnson is Alan Johnson, as for the third Gory, it kind of looks like it could be Joey, but it looks more like a 'u' than an 'o' so I'm not sure.
edit: popped up the rules for playing tombstone poker on the Dealer's page and it gives a clearer picture of the names. The third Gory is Suzy.

It may not be text in the image, but I have noticed a few odd things about the book. for one the spine of the book is either split and broken or there is a chunk of pages missing. If you look at the book there is a space between the edges of the pages. Now those of you that are book readers will note that usualy the pages of a book meet up at the spine so either the spine is broken or missing pages.
On the creepy side of things. I see dead people! there are faces in between the pages.
