rose : I think someone still needs to go to those coordinates - I suspect that the message changing is intended only to give the impression of a 'real' sleep institute.

Still not sure about the 'go softly' bit - perhaps BriEnigma was correct (in irc) - maybe you need to carry a big stick! (up a tree maybe .... Question )

I wonder whether it means you need to go there in the evening. Confused Since the phone message only provides us something useful during nighttime hours, and it tells us to go softly, it occurred to me that they might have something there that's only available when the sun is down. But probably not... right? They wouldn't have us out wandering the streets past bedtime, would they? Shocked

Hey Rose,

The Receda Sleep Institute has two different forms essentially. One during the daytime hours and one during nightime hours (which starts a little after midnight BST). This just seems to be the nature of the "Sleep" Institute (they are all insomniacs that work during the night...) During the daytime hours, certain messages will leave you with an "extension" number to call back with. One of these extensions
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
131

will then prompt you with a series of questions. If you answer with the correct number each time you will be given more questions until you finally reach the clue which has been discussed at lengths earlier in this thread. For more detail and spoiler to the actually questions and solutions, I suggest rereading the entire thread.

That being said, good luck with the search. I'm sure whenever you go you should be able to find whatever it is we're looking for. Very Happy

ive been on phone to Rose. more details to follow
in lieu for when rose comes back and fill us in:
OK. managed to phone Rose up (i love my voip) and she was at the location - the "bulge" in the path, on the left. The bule to the righ was empty, just benches.
there was v, high hedges around, and manicured gardens. in 30mins spotted 2 cops and 2 gardeners. at one point the cop waved her back onto the path!

but in the "bulge" there was a 9:11 memorial
7 names

bruce d bowhm andrew c brunn
william s burke (jnr)
david j fontana
christian h maltby
charles m mills

its got poems: in every wave in every breeze we remember you
"as the sea sand and sun remain eternal, so does their memory"
jones beach lifeguard corp

no noise around, but crickets.

the obelisk according to Rose does look like the lighthouse of pharos (from roman coin), but it was closed cos of unsafe masonry. its a water tower btw.

park is huge, well maintained etc. no litter, no little plastic boxes.

no bulletin boards. was some skywriting but said something like "samantha i love you" Smile

imo, the "Remeber, go quiety" really fits in very well with the memorial. also bear in mind the poems.

However it feels a bit off using the memorial of such a recent and sad event for a puzzle. More info when Rose gets back from the beach, and there remains one thing to do before i sign off, and thats to thank Rose for going!

THREE CHEERS FOR ROSE!!!

is it the 9/11 memorial

hey guys: sorry I couldn't find this, thanks to krystyn and chippy! Also I am running off for an 8:00pm theater curtain-now late- so I will probably get all the pics up tomorrow. Chippy knows all.

long day but at least I was at (or near) the beach.

Note to self : never go on a GPS based search without a GPS device. Doing this was impossible in i love bees, why did I think this would be different?

My premise was (and is) that the thing I was looking for had to be fairly permanent because this exercise was not time dependent in any way. So it had to be something the PMs would know would last, not be taken away, peeled off, cleaned up, etc. All the other clues at least had a day if not a time.

Second, the Obelisk in the center seems to fit the theme of ancient wonders like the Lighthouse of Alexandria. ( At some point I will find the ancient coin struck while the lighthouse still existed that has the actual image of the lighthouse. )

I don't know if an Obelisk was a wonder. I mentioned to chippy that the World Trade Center was at one point the world's tallest building, was the tallest building in NYC and could have been considered a wonder itself. Not sure if that is relevant to the theme of wonders.

A summary:

1. This is a huge park. The grounds between the parking lots and the entrance to the beach are very large. They are well maintained and formal gardens along walkways.

No way anything could be posted in the park that wasn't official park literature. It would be taken down, picked up, stripped off, by park police or gardeners.

No way anything was buried. (signs announced "buried electric line")

Hedges, taller than I am, seperated the lawn from access on every side except for the gardens along the walkway. No way I was going into hedge to search after I spotted poison ivy. I did see some low bush blueberries, a few cute bunny rabbits, grasshoppers, preying mantis, many sea gulls, Canadian geese, and starlings.

Nothing in or on lawn. Not on any patch of lawn. Lawn patches are mowed and people are not supposed to walk all over them. (though no signs prohibit walking on grass.) Got chased, nicely, by a cop for being on lawn behind the memorial, which is where you guys seem to think I should looked.

Cops and gardeners around as well as lots of people. No way to be stealthy hiding something if you are a PM. No place to hide it.

Nothing in either bus stop. One of the bus stops is the odd building seen in a corner of the magnified photo. They are empty, nothing posted, anything posted would be removed.

No access to obelisk -water tower -as the bricks are coming loose and could fall on people. There is a temporary fence around it. The road around it is a two lane well-traveled bit of highway. I thought it was dangerous to try to cross. And remember I am a jaywalker from NYC. So think lots of traffic moving around a circle too fast to enable pedestrian traffic.

Only a few things on the bulletin board in the park office, which is not even close to the coordinates pictured. They were for the triathlon, a fund raising walk and some carousel. Nothing in lost or found - but it didn't help that I had no idea what to ask for ---um, do you have a bag or plastic box... "what's in it".... "no idea" .... you get the picture.

Beach is closed for the summer, no life guards to ask questions, etc. There is a wildlife center. I did check there but again, wasn't sure what to say.

2. The thing closest to the coordinates is the 9/11 Memorial which isn't in the google photo but was put up,according to a press release, in August of 2003. The memorial is quite lovely and has a center tablet with a message and the names of people who were former lifeguards or family members of employees of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps who died when the towers collapsed.

My only problem with the solution to this puzzle being the memorial-- would the PMs would use it -- do the people in PPC know about 9/11...does that matter? I don't know. Anyway.

The bad news: I am putting up photos of the memorial as soon as I reinstall some software I need that got corrupted. Please be patient. Chippy said you found an image.

Names on memorial:

In Every Wave,
In Every Breeze,
We Remember You
--------------------------
As the Sea, Sun and Sand
Remain Eternal
So Shall Their Memory
Bruce D. Boehm
Andrew C. Brunn
William F. Burke Jr.
David J. Fontana
Christian H. Maltby
Charles M. Mills
Thomas A. Palazzo

3. There is nothing on the other bulge in the semi-circle except benches.

For the time being I uploaded a postcard of the general location so you can decide if I was in the right place.

definitely looks like you were in the right place Rose. Thanks for taking the trip!

I agree with chippy, also, that it would not seem entirely right for the PMs to use the memorial, although I guess we can't cross it out. Perhaps we should cross reference these names with the Wiki?

I'm also going to quadrouple check the coordinates, make sure we were in the right place.

Good job once again Rose! Mr. Green

Well done Rose. Thanks for taking the trip.
I too agree that the PM's are unlikely to use a 9/11 memorial as a game clue so what we are missing here I have no idea.
I am also surprised that we seem to have only ONE active player in the NY area. Thought we had more. Are we loosing players? Are players loosing interest?
There are (or were last time I checked) about 650 players registered over on the perplexcity.com site. How many active players do we actually have I wonder? My guess is not that many. Any ideas why?

*raises hand to represent for Central Florida* Cool And if any of my friends still lived in NYC, I would have sent them along to help Rose out! Even though they aren't ARgers. /sigh

no help to anyone but:

The Jones Beach tower, now a familiar Jones Beach State Park landmark, was modeled on the campanile of St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice.

Long Island

Bold used for clarity in this rambling post. If it is annoying, I will take it out.

We have more than one active player. This was a last minute thing - Brienigma mentioned it to me late on Friday and I said I would go. No time to announce or organize a group effort.

Also - this is not that close to New York City, at least if you dont have a car. The train round trip off peak is about $13.00 and, because the free bus to the beach from the train station STOPS when the beach closes (Labor Day weekend) - it cost about $38 round trip for a cab to the beach. So the total just to get out there and back is over $50 (or in the language of PPC 10 packs of cards.).

Also - we didn't organize a good team effort. I thought that whatever I was looking for would be obvious, like the poster, or maybe some loud music, when it wasn't, I had to call two people (bagsbee and krystyn) just to get someone in chat (chippy) to call me back. (thanks again guys!) I don't suggest doing any more expeditions unless they are well organized ahead of time. If this had been screamingly obvious, I think would have found it. (and maybe I did) If not, then we need more than just me and a couple of my friends. Smile

Many people have been assimilated into the awesome game Last Call Poker. I myself have been mesmerized by learning how to play Texas Hold 'Em. The game is almost totally consuming. As for syzygy, I was waiting until more cards came out for PPC. Until brienigma told me I didn't even know this existed. That must be true for others as well.

I really don't see a point in going back out there unless we have more information or clues. ( OR a freakin' GPS device. I guess I will ask for one for Christmas.) There just isn't anything there that I could see. But they do have the ocean (though it is closed for swimming- no life guards and a sometimes ferocious undertow) the beach and pitch and putt golf.

Questions:

1. Was I in the right place?

2. Do people agree that because this wasn't a time dependent drop- no date or time given that we could see- it had to be something permanent?

3. Did we miss something and it IS time dependent? Something more than just the coordinates?

4. I wouldn't think going out there at night is the answer. It is too far and would be too late for me to go. And it gets dark. Wink

5. Other ideas????

PS. If you arent yet playing Last Call Poker--it is possible to follow along. You don't have to be consumed.

Simply go to the Top Players page on lastcallpoker.com. Click on the Card Hunters found cards - start with the dealer and andadaughter. Each found card has links to info troves, This will get you started on an amazingly well-written story (sound familiar? to people who played i love bees, a well-written story is essential just as it is with the PPC players)

Anyway if you do play, add me to your quicklinks! ( i know shameless self promotion- but I have linked to way more people than have linked back to me.) I am trying to add as many people as I can, I want to see how many people are playing.

Plus, if you add me, add your name to the thread under Hello! at the Last Call Poker threads here. That way people can link you. You get a little skull next to your name. Very Happy

This part isn't one I can help with because I don't have a GPS. Although more and more I'm noticing how useful they can be in this kind of situation. I think I'd like to get an inexpensive one that can simply help me find locations. Not allow me to map my trips, draw new streets, etc. Laughing Anybody want to suggest a reasonable GPS with the basic function?

I'm not sure I believe this must be so. Like the event in the Canadian movies, it could be something that is semi-permanent and can be seen over a period of several days, weeks, etc. Not sure what this could be, though, especially since you noted that no signs would be up that aren't park-related.

My guess would be that it's something very different from the other things we got: posters in England, on-screen ads in Canada. They seem to be trying to cover as many bases as possible, using as many different types of clues as possible. Neither so far has been terribly difficult to find, although we understandably got confused along the way.

I'll bet NY is following their pattern. It should be a new brand of clue. It should be one that can last at least several days (like a poster or a movie ad). And it should be fairly easy once we figure out where to spot it.

Crying or Very sad I hope not!!!

Seriously, though, I doubt it would be time-dependent for two reasons. 1. We received no time/date clue. 2. The posters (if you guys hadn't snitched 'em, naughties! Laughing -- Hehe I'm just jealous I don't have one on my wall.) and the movie ads didn't require that you be there on a certain date to see them. Our dates only told us the dates they would first show up. These clues were more than just clues for us. They were advertisements for future players.

Yeah, I agree. Although the sleep-therapy line and the "go softly" suggestion really confuse me. Are they parts of the clue? Or are they just parts of the act?

*brain goes all squishy* Laughing

Well, has anyone tried calling the number lately? Other than that, I'm just waiting for the next Futures column. Wink

Just tried it again now, on the off chance that it had been changed in some way - it's pre-midnight at the moment though (so, time for sleep in the weird and wacky world of somna-therapy experts)

I am fairly confident that you were in the right place. It is certainly the place that we saw on google maps and mapquest.
Also on the phone line the last phrase before they give you the coordinates is about the lighthouse looking out to sea which seems to make sense with that location.

I called the number last night thinking that it might have changed, but it was the same as before telling us to go softly to those coordinates.
I'll try again tonight.

I just checked. Nothing new. Sad

Just a thought, Rose said there was nothing else in the bulge apart from benches; the benches didn't have plaques or engravings on them, did they? You know, like they can be dedicated to people some times?
