[UPDATE] Scarlet Email 30th September

I just went on scarlets website and there is a new email but she couldn't send it because of problems with her key.

I'm not sending this out in email this week because I'm having some problems with my key. I'm so sorry!

--------------------------------------------------

It's been a weird week. I should be just enjoying my vacation, chilling out, spending time with my boyfriend, but instead I find myself constantly thinking and wondering about this guy I've met, Allain. Even Margot and Sanj, who haven't heard any of our arguments, wonder if there's something wrong between me and Brede. Yesterday, while we were walking through Sleed Forest - it's amazing, there are vines there so huge and tall they look like trees - Margot pretended to have a stone in her shoe so the two of us would fall behind a bit. When Brede and Sanj were a little way in front of us, she said:
"Look, Scarlett, is everything OK with you and Brede?"
I said everything was fine.
She looked at me and said: "Is it about that detour you want to make? The family history thing? Sanj and I will go with you if Brede's being funny about it."
I shook my head.
"Everything's fine, Margot. Seriously."
She looked at me, tipping her head to the side.
"Sanj said that Brede thinks you're interested in that guy we met - Allain. Are you?"
I laughed, shook my head, and marched quickly to join the boys. Margot still looks at me funny, though.

So now I'm being extra careful not to seem to speak to Allain more than anyone else. Still, after what I heard last week, I felt I had to confront him and ask him who he'd been talking to in his compartment. He'd said he was travelling alone - has he brought a girlfriend with him? Someone else?

I saw him again as we were getting ready to board the train last night. He wasn't looking any different to normal - still tall, a little dishevelled, with dark hair and a slightly suspicious air. But no more suspicious than usual. When Brede went to freshen up, I grabbed Allain and pulled him into a corner of the platform. I don't know if Margot or Sanj saw what I was doing. Allain seemed pleased to see me but I realised I was angry. Had I alienated my friends, not to mention my *boyfriend* because of this man only to find out he was lying to me?

"Who are you travelling with?" I said.
He blinked at me. "No one. I'm travelling alone."
I felt sure he was lying.
"Then why were you shouting in your compartment last week? Having an argument? I heard you. You told someone they 'shouldn't have trusted her,' you were angry."
He blinked again. "You heard that?"
"Yes."
He ran his hand through his hair and looked at me. I noticed that his eyes were pale blue. He seemed so sincere.
He said: "I talk to myself sometimes. That's all it was. I don't know. I've been working on this thing by myself for so long that I think I'm going a bit crazy. I didn't know whether I should have trusted you or not, told you about Viendenbourg. I was shouting at myself."
I must still have looked pretty unconvinced.
"Look," he said, "we can't talk now, but I've decided I was wrong. I should trust you. And I have something to show you - I think there's more information on my data button than I thought, perhaps a secret hidden file. Come to my compartment when you can get away."
He told me his compartment number and squeezed my arm. Then he turned and walked away.

I know, in my heart, that I should stop this now. I know that I should forget any of this ever happened. Next time the train stops, we'll be as close to Viendenbourg as we'll ever be, but I should forget that and just carry on with our regular trip. I should ignore Allain every time I meet him. I should go back to my life. But instead of all of that I went to his compartment last night. I waited until Brede was asleep, I put on my robe and I crept out of our carriage, down the train to where Allain had told me he was. I was tired. It was late. Probably my eyes were playing tricks on me. But as I was walking down, when I was a carriage away from Allain's compartment, I was sure, completely *sure* that I saw an old man, with white hair, come out of his compartment. Not just any old man, but the old man I met in the library all those weeks ago. The old man who told me about Viendenbourg. I stood still. I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. But I was sure. It was him. Even the very fast walk, as he sped away and out of the carriage.

In a daze, I walked down to Allain's compartment. I knocked on the door but there was no answer.

Oooh, another death may be? Seems like everyone who hears the name 'Viendenbourg' winds up in sticky predicaments as a result. Smile

Either that or Allain and the old man are one and the same person - perhaps some kind of embodied schizophrenia, or time travel, or something ...

I'm inclined to agree. Both Allain and the old man are described as "tallish" and the two are never around at the same time. Also when Scarlet talked with the old man at the library he looked not as old when they talked up close. Who knows with perplexcity technology perhaps he could even have some kind of personal hologram.

This came to my mind when I read Scarlett's newest update. It's one of the things Allain said earlier that made Brede so uncomfortable.

I like Allain. Embarassed I don't want him to be a bad guy. I also don't want him to be dead. So I could easliy just be reaching. Laughing But Scarlett indicated that he seemed very sincere when he mentioned talking to himself and going crazy. Maybe he is going crazy (in which case, Scarlett might go a bit off herself). Maybe he is both Allain and the old man, using some of the elusive technology. Or maybe he is... under the old man's control without realizing it? *shrugs*

dude, to me that sounds like a i'm going to try and seduce you away from your boyfriend (which obviously isn't going to be too hard - sincere blue eyes - honestly...) into my compartment, making sure you don't tell anyone where you are going, and kill you because you know too much.'

problems with her key? sabotage and/or jamming technology more like, wouldn't want her calling for help or relaying vital information would they now?

don't trust him scarlett!

rach =) (who is possibly too cynical when it comes to guys...)

Plus, remember this about the old man: "His eyes were very pale blue, translucent as if their colour had been worn away over the years."

Allain, naturally, also has these pale blue eyes.

I think it has to do with the super-advanced AI technology they used to have. Or they could be simply related, sure.

I'm personally thinking that it's some kind of hologram cloak device. Such technology probably wouldn't be past a civilization that developed artificial intelligence.

And since he knows about Viendenbourg - I wouldn't put it past him to have found something there and is using it.

Remember people:

"Viendenbourg, before everything changed"

Think Hiroshima, could Viendenbourg have been the site of a huge military clash and it was wiped out?

When we consider "V, before everything changed" in relation to the search for the cube - perhaps we are supposed to believe there could be records pertaining to (currently) unknown activities or properties of the cube, discovered pre-war.

Are we thinking, then, that the cloaking device is cloaking the fact that Allain and the old man are the same person? That still doesn't explain him talking in his compartment.

I suppose they could be the same person, but Allain really is confused about it. That way, when he so sincerely said he thought he might be going crazy, it would have been the truth. Maybe he believes the old man exists as another person just as much as Scarlett does, even if he and the old man are the same.

Or, as Cassandra said, they could just be related. Yet, I still think there's something going on with that unknown technology.

I just hope he isn't dead! Very Happy *crushes on Allain* Embarassed lol

If her key wasn't working properly how did she get onto the internet?? Maybe they just couldn't email it out in time or something and needed an excuse.

Well isn't the answer obvious?
Allain is a super-advanced AI construct! And the Cube is the CPU of the world-spanning AI control that they had before the War! Viendenbourg was where the built it's main control room, but then *starts muttering about conspiracies and self-aware computers*.

No, actually, I like that last theory. In the broadest sense, it's certainly an interesting take on the Cube - we've always been told that it more or less appeared from nowhere, but if we work on the assumption that it was originally part of a military programme unknown to most Perplexians of the time, that 'AC' *does* equal the dating 'After Conflict' and that the Cube was discovered 7 years after the conflict ended, then, hell, maybe there was simply no - one on site any longer to tell those Perplexians what it actually was. Maybe everyone had been so shell - shocked by the War and its events that they'd automatically turned to religious doctrine, and were prepared to dismiss their technological background in favour of reinterpretation via metaphysical ideas?

Admitedly, that doesn't have much to do with the old man/Allain mystery. It seems evident that there is a conflict of interest between the 'pair' (very Jekyll and Hyde, no doubt) and that, as everyone is agreeing, the clues (such as blue eyes) that seem to indicate some kind of direct interaction between them. It seems to me that the options that make sense are:

1. The very straightforward: Allain and the old man are two separate people. They are both onboard together, but have never yet been seen in one another's company. They are probably related (maybe even father and son) which is where the genetic similarity comes in.

2. Allain is some kind of tech construct 'mask' for the old man. This begs the question as to why they look similar, but perhaps the tech operates on the principle of deriving a template from the cognitive patterns of the user. In that sense, what the old man has done is construct his 'mask' using the template of his own younger self (and maybe this was deliberate - he knew that Scarlett was prying into things, and he came up with a 'lure' - a young man to whom she might be attracted.) The main criticism with this theory is that, surely, there would be no difference of opinion between Allain and the old man, if they were truly one and the same.

3. Allain is a real person, who is not the old man as such, but is being used as some kind of 'walk in' for him. That is to say, Allain is possessed by the old man, who only subsists as an energy trace or something. That would explain well why there is a conflict of interest. It's intriguing to think that there might be a time travel element to all this - an older version of Allain latching on to his own younger self - but it would be a pretty convoluted set - up (worthy of a time paradox novel!). After all, it would appear that the old man remembers times long gone (perhaps he's far, far older than he looks even). And yet his 'youth' (if he is, indeed, an older version of Allain) is taking place in our present. So, the only conclusion would be that, in his future, young Allain travels back into the past where he grows old, before making his way back to his own youth, which is past to him, but now, relatively speaking, in the future. Which could be happening....but, hey...

I'm going with Door Number Three, Leevaritz. Laughing But I'd like to suggest some changes to the interior decorating. You're right. Time travel may be too much of a paradox to fit nicely.

What if Allain and the old man are separate individuals? Okay, then, Mokey. Explain their resemblance, why we never see them together, and all of the shady goings-on.

Mokey's Spec: Allain has delved deeper into this mystery than Scarlett. At this point, he's gone so far into it that he can't get out. The old man is a projection of the AI that approaches anyone who asks about Viendenbourg. The strange map does have something else hidden in it -- it allows the old man to slowly take over the map-holder. Like a parasite. Part of this take-over is that the AI begins to look like its host, or vice versa. Soon, there will be only the old man who can function normally on his own... or there will be only Allain who is not himself anymore.

Crying or Very sad Poor Allain!

Laughing Once again, Mokey tries very hard to cast positive light on Allain, and she knows she will look a fool when he turns out to be a raving lunatic. Laughing

Aaaah! Allain is being assimilated by the AI! Kinda like the Borg and Skynet rolled into one! Twisted Evil
