The rest should turn up as the game progresses, right?

We also have the Gambler (Maurice Pikar) and the Drunk (William Shiner), at the very least. I could make some guesses at the others, too... For the record, I agree that Cigarette, and not Simon, is most probably the Killer.

The Slaughterer

Well, in practical usage, more like "the butcher."

Could Hashochet be translated as "the killer"?

Skip to last two paragraphs if you hate linguistic discussions.

Well, I suppose it could. It comes from the root shin-chet-tav, which means to kill or to destroy. That said, there's the connotative meaning to consider as well. Shechitah, from the same root...hold on...do you know about the root system?

I'm going to assume you don't.

Brief digression:

Most words in Hebrew come from a three-consonant root. Changing the vowels between the consonants, adding prefixes or suffixes, etc. changes the meaning of the world, whether it's a noun or a verb or an adjective, etc.

For example, the root qof-dalet-shin indicates holiness, or that something is sacred. From this root you get words like kodesh (an adjective meaning "holy"), kedushah ("holiness"), kiddushin (betrothal), kiddush (a blessing over wine), Kaddish (an important prayer), and so on. (Also, qedushah as used in Genesis, apparently to indicate a type of sacred prostitute, who may have held a priestess-like status in Mesopotamia at the time, just for your bit of trivia. Wink) Or, a root like shin-mem-ayin, basically meaning "hear" or "obey," can give you obviously the verb "to hear," but also words meaning "rumor," "hearing," "audibility," "obedience," "announcement," and so on. Some of the roots produce words with less obvious connections, but I think I've probably bored you enough by now. Wink Sorry you asked yet?

Back to shochet. It comes from the root shin-chet-tav, meaning "to kill," or "to destroy."

So, literally, yes, I suppose you could translate it "killer."

However, Hebrew has a perfectly good word for "killer": rotzeach. It has a lot fewer words than English, which draws its lexicon from a lot of different languages, and therefore tends to have multiple synonyms for most words; that's not the case with Hebrew.

In this case, shochet has a very strong connotative meaning, which is that of a ritual slaughterer, or butcher, who kills animals according to Jewish law so that they are kosher. The same root gives us shechitah, which refers to the ritual slaughter itself.

The point being: you could translate it "killer," but it's very much a secondary meaning connotatively. If you ask a Hebrew speaker what shochet means, s/he is going to tell you it's a butcher or a ritual slaughterer.

Ergo, if it looks like Cigarette is the killer, I don't think this is sufficient evidence to point to someone else.

What about Spider as the Killer? She seems pretty menacing even if we haven't seen any murders by her yet.

Yeh, but using that we could also have Tony Viet. If anything i might think of spider as the kid, but i dont think that's likely.
Also, seeing as cigarette (from the text file in preacher's profile) seems to think he's killing people who deseve it, he could also be the sherrif, although thats more likely to be McPherson, Kim or Rojas, and my money's on McPherson; Kim's corrupt, and i'm hoping that anyone who looks quite so much of a smarmy git as Rojas is gonna die soon. Could also be the "latina cop" mentioned in McPherson's profile

Hey, just adding myself to the list. Got mine on Oct. 1, but I just havn't gotten around to looking at it today. Is there anything that all the people who have got the message have in common? Poker buddies? Number of chips? Or is it just randomly picking email addies?

Perhaps everyone is getting it. I received it at both my "Arana" and "JoshFord" LCP user accounts. One came Oct. 1 late afternoon, the other late evening.

Is there anyone who did not receive it?

Maybe, but the butcher thing from the phone, as shad0 said seems more likely to me, and Cigarette seems to have the Killer role pretty much under control.

I knew there was something odd with the cemetery being a jewish cemetery.

Ok this is where I can really help the group.

I am thinking of Chad Gad Ya which takes place at the end of the passover story that talks about everyone killing eachother but in a different sense.

Very interesting that this is written. I believe this may have been created based on the discussion that we were all having on if we need to get someone in the tournament. Seems like this is saying, nope we are going to show you are hand so you don't have to go paranoid.

The big game takes place wed at 7pm, still curious if that has anything to do with the ARG but starting to doubt it now since 7 is way later than 12 which makes one think are we going to see on Wed.

lol only time will tell. Nice job Puppet Masters wherever you are.

Well, I think someone pointed out that it's a cemetery with a Jewish section, as there's at least one gravestone with a cross on it.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time someone's brought up Had Gadya, but what about it? How does it help us?
