I didn't see any names on any benches. As I recall they were concrete and pretty permanent. I hope to have pictures up tomorrow afternoon. I took a bunch with a disposable camera and they should be on a disc by tomorrow afternoon.

Did we have to find a new site from these clues? Is that it? One can only hope the next futures will shed some (nice) light on the next thing to do.

Also - I noticed that the pitch and putt located on the beach was a location that others seemed to over ride. I did walk over there and there is a shack that you can get golf balls, clubs, etc. Go quietly could apply to being near a golf course....As for the remember, there is an exhibit of the 75th anniversary of Jones Beach opening.

I am really wondering about the accuracy of google maps. Is there another map index service? Xnb or chippy or mapmaker or any other geography person - care to check on some super-duper professional version of whatever software you have?

As for the golf place. I spoke to the girl in the shack and got a score card. Saw nothing unusual. It was a very dingy and dark place.

I just checked Topozone, which allows you to put in your coords in the original form without conversion. Same place came up, it's definitely somewhere around there. Interestingly, topozone got the exact same place, but only went down to 2 decimal places, not 3. Does google maps refine it more? Can we find some program that will?

In any case, a closer look of the area seems to be called for.

The postcard of Jones Beach almost looks like it could be a map piece on the back of the puzzle cards.

1 degree of latitude is around 111 km, which per 0.00001 of a degree is only 1.11 m

1 degree of longditude is around 85 km at 40 degrees (longditude changes it's representative size as you get to the north pole of course) which per 0.00001 of a degree is only 85cm.

So the co-ordinates that we were given were extremely accurate, which points to the fact that it probably isn't the obelisk or the 911 monument but that specific location.

If you do a search in google maps and try 40.5957 then 40.5958, and -73.5089 and -73.5090 the co-ordinates for those locations are all very, very close to the original one, and I think it doesn't really matter if google maps truncates it to 4dp, because it still gives us a square of 8.5m x 11.1 m, which doesn't include the memorial or the oblisk.

If MC had have wanted us to hit there, they would have been able to easily specify co-ordinates that would have landed directly on top of the specific item.

Which leads me to believe that two things are possible

1) Someone needs to go back to the location and search the exact spot given on the map

or

2) The co-ordinates are not what we thought, either a different system (i've looked at some but can't find any that fit), or not co-ordinates at all.

The whole sleep phone line is worded perculiarly, and that actual phone line text itself could be a clue, although I can't see any obvious patterns msyelf apart from the 7 wonders being used.

That's driving me crazy, too. Especially the "softly" part. In the context of a sleep-therapy line, we assume it means quietly. Could it mean something else? Like a place where the ground is soft, or a place you aren't supposed to stomp around?

Reaching out for anything here...

If we are given such an accurate reference maybe it would be a good idea to bring along a spade.

From Rose's description:

Quote:
"Nothing in or on lawn. Not on any patch of lawn. Lawn patches are mowed and people are not supposed to walk all over them. (though no signs prohibit walking on grass.) Got chased, nicely, by a cop for being on lawn behind the memorial, which is where you guys seem to think I should looked.

Cops and gardeners around as well as lots of people. No way to be stealthy hiding something if you are a PM. No place to hide it."

Which makes me think a spade isn't necessarily the answer Wink

Actually a 8.5m x 11.1 m hole might be a bit large. Embarassed

Ok, so the clue said "Go quietly" and that does fit a memorial. I guess the main thing I'm struggling with is how they can use the memorial respectfully as part of the game. Obviously they can't deface it in any way (attach things, bury things nearby, set anything on top, etc).

They could create a puzzle based on the names of the people or on the poems, as has been suggested, but what kind of puzzle?

Ok, well that was pretty much a waste. I guess I'm thinking the memorial is our best bet at this point. Maybe Rose's pictures will reveal something.

I just wanted to clarify that you can enter the coords into Google Maps without having to convert it first - you just need the right format: 40 35.745 N, 73 30.539 W. If you enter that, you get this map; which is the same as all the others ones posted Smile
