Re-reading the Without Rancor (July 12, 1969) link, I noticed the picture didn't seem to have anything to do with the text.

The title of the picture is 1006_2_Excelsior_View.jpg
Which I found that they got from this web page:

Maybe this is where Pikar stayed. Could simply be decoration, since I don't think they want us to go to Paraguay to check the guest list from 1969.

 		I think its just *generic paraguay picture* rather than a clue. especially since "The hotel has a plaque saying it was built in 1983 (I could have this wrong), only 20 years ago" so he was unlikely to have stayed there in '69

Hello sapagoo,

Could you share how (the method you used) to find that the photo originated from Bob's ride across South America?

I was trying to do the same, but I couldn't figure it out how you made the connection.

I'm not Sapagoo, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

A Google Images search turned up the page in question:

I didn't think about googling the name of the picture. But I took Excelsior from the name of the picture, and Asuncion, Paraguay from the text, and put those 3 words in Google.
That came up with multiple hits for the Hotel Excelsior. I then used Google Image Search to try to find if it was a view from the hotel, or the roof of the hotel.
It was on the first page of Excelsior Asuncion Paraguay.
