[Hold 'em Lesson] A tip for beginners...

Until you get a real feel for the game and learn every little detail about the game, it's important to be patient. Being patient and waiting for your cards will pay off more then getting into every single pot just to see if you get lucky with 2, 7 offsuit hold cards in last position.

I won't go into how playing on-line is so much different then playing in B&M (Brick and Mortar) areas, or how you need to take notes on every player and their style, or even how someone chats can tell you about their personality/playing style.

However, I will give you a little lesson in position and cards to play in those positions.

Positions are broken up into 4 sections and starts from the left of the dealer (also called the "button"). If you view the table as a pie chart it will be easier to understand this.

The first section are the blinds. The blinds were inserted into the game to ensure that there would be a little money in the pot every time. When playing in the "blind" positions, it is important to keep your playing cards to only the best possible. These include pairs that are above 10 and suited connectors (J, Q same suit, Q, K same suit, etc.) that are above 10. Because you are in the 1st section, you'll be betting first in every round (a round occurs 3 times... after the flop, after the draw card, aka "4th street", and after the last card, known as "the river"). This means that you will not be able to get a feel for other people's hold cards as well as you would in the later positions. But this also makes "bluffing" a little bit harder.

The next section includes the next 3 seats after the Big Blind position. You still must be strict, but can also play a little looser. The cards to play in this position includes those mentioned in the first position as well as all combinations of cards 10 or above.

The third section involves the rest of the seats, excluding the dealer. The cards to play are all the previously mentioned, as well as suited and unsuited connectors from 7 and up.

The fourth section is the "dealer" position. This is the best position to be in and it also allows you to be able to play more cards (basically anything above a 7). The "dealer" always bets last in every round, so it's much easier to get a feel for what people are holding before you put any money into the pot. It also makes "bluffing" a lot easier.

Once you get a feel for the game you can play a little looser then what was described here. But remember to always watch the table and play your hands accordingly.

Now, go out there and learn about "outs", "odds", "kickers" and all of those little things that will make you a much better player in the long run.
