[UPDATE] [EVENT] Manchester, UK - Oct. 9th

mancunian update: nothing as far as i can see. went in to town today and although it would have been a perfect day for it, alas no signwriters. i guess we have to wait for some sort of date? i checked round the rest of the town centre, couldnt see anything obviously receda-ish, even checking all the shops and buying a new skirt for the sole purpose of staying in disguise honest. have also recruited people to look out for signwriters and report back.
as for the sky centre, well, chris, its illegal for me to look up peoples phone numbers or car reg's or give them fake criminal records but they obviously thought land usage codes were too boring to include in the data protection training :)
rach =)

I attempted to merge related topics. This is now discussion for the Oct 9th event in Manchester. --Cassandra

not yet because tbh i sincerely doubt its relevant. i did phone them twice and the number doesnt accept incoming calls. i'm gonna try and find out what type of business it is before going because its not exactly in the town centre, its actually in quite an industrial area which is why i have an inkling its a wholesalers. it just doesnt seem likely atm.

I had a funny feeling it might be the lead..... but I've just done a whois on it and the address was registered in 2000. I was thinking maybe MC were getting sneaky after our whoising escapades, and actually parked a domain with yell.com to throw us off the trail, especially with the number being dud. It's probably still worth a visit there, if it is a shut down shop it might have a poster or something outside. I only live in Blackpool, if you can't make it down there by the weekend, I can pop down on Sunday.

I really can't see MC using sky writing for a clue - it's a clue that would last a few minutes, be expensive and have quite a good chance of never being seen by someone who knew what it meant!

True, but leaving scrunched up balls of paper in Starbucks is hardly a more reliable tactic. The paper is likely to be tidied up, or at best, read by someone who doesn't understand it, and thrown away. They did definitely say skywriting though. I remember looking up all the time when i started playing in the hope of seeing something, and picking up old bits of crap as well Embarassed

I agree, and also they didn't give any time or date, so in addition to all that it's more likely that none of the Cube hunters would see it. As for the Sky Centre, it seems more likely.... but in that case where does the 'town' part of the clue fit in? Maybe it's neither of these, something we haven't though of yet. If it is the Sky Centre, it might not even be anything to do with the building itself, there could be something outside.

I'd offer to go and look for this since I'm in Blackpool too, but I have precisely no money whatsoever, thus no train ticket.

Strange about the coincidence! My accident was a three-car pile-up, too! I was at the front end of it all. You sure you aren't in Orlando, Neuromancer?

If the car behind you was a crappy red micra then yes, that was me, lol!

I agree with The Worminator, as there's no specifics it implies that the clue is a bit more permanent, and has less chance of being taken down/thrown away/not seen by cubehunters.

Josiah's spec does sound viable, but as MC are, by the looks of things, actively trying to get some new recruits I'm not so sure that they'd put a big clue in some backstreet old shop. At least in the last live-event at UCL MC were guaranteed to have a lot of students and various other people see the poster, and perhaps get interested and fork up some cash for cards...then again, the Receda's Revenge page does mention something about buying the next installment of the game so maybe that backstreet illegal-sounding shop is a makeshift MC retro-game emporium!!!

We could be specing for ages so I guess the best thing to do is for somebody to just go and check this place out...

Joderell Bank?

is part of Manchester University; and definitely a sky centre - even if this is the only worthwhile contribution I make to this, I will be happy!

I'm near Warrington & looked skywards in a Manchester direction & saw nothing - but I am busy on Wednesdays Wink

Hey Spugmeistress, which station do you work out of, I have a mate who is at Moss Side (& I have seen the inside of Greymares Lane station once - ewwwwwwww).

Regards, Stew

Take care... isn't this what we said about the Long Island clue? Wink I hope this isn't one of the clues we can't figure out because for some reason we freak without a date/time. Embarassed

now I'm going to be terribly cryptic...but I think I've figured it out. Currently searching for information on whether someone should visit this place in person or if this is another part of the website keywords...will update on my findings before I go to bed.

*****

My findings:

Was looking up "manchester town centre" skyline - this led me to an unusual building: the CIS solar-paneled tower

Until recently, it was the tallest building in Manchester. Also, get this:

The Keywords:
STAR
POWER
(the long island beach site)

My reading, now:
SOLAR or SOLAR POWER
TOWER or TOWERS (9/11 twin towers memorial at the water tower)

(solartowers?solarpowertower? I have exhausted every single combination of those words both in domain search and as subpages for many pxc sites..using blue, cis, and others. and I'm giving up till tomorrow.)

So: I don't know whether it's another part of the keyword list, whether somewhere in here *is* the website, or whether someone needs to go there and check for suspicious signage.
But, Spugmistress, feel free to take a trip down there Wink

Hope this is a good lead...

That link does bear a resemblence (albeit a more "Earth"ly one) to the bottom of Scarlett's page. Probably just red herring, but thought it worth pointing out.

Alright, so we've got three days to figure out for sure where this location is, whether its a website or physical location. Two possible physical locations so far: the CIS tower and the Sky Centre wholesale place.

How many people in Manchester are free on Sunday and willing to check these places out?

I will be able to get down there on Sunday... now they've given us a time frame... I am well on board with it being sky/some sort of sky message because of the short time frame Wink

I will be setting off from Blackpool on Sunday morning (11ish?) if anyone is on the way and wants a lift down, and they promise they're not a psychopath, they're welcome to come along Smile

EDIT: The 'provisionally' sounds like 'weather permitting' to me, another pointer towards sky writing.

The website has just changed to remove the word 'provisioinally'. I wonder if that was because I said I was going, and I wonder if I decide not to go now, they'll add 'provisionally' back on Smile

Or maybe a book will fall on my head and I'll die for changing my mind for no apparent reason!
