Another connection I have just realised..here is an image of the Angel of the North' in the notebook. This was created by Antony Gormley.

The statue that I mentioned before outside the British Library which was inspired by William Blakes painting of Isaac Newton, looks down on a ring a carved granite boulders in the piazza of the British Library, pic here.

From British LIb website:
Quote:
The planets
Here the planets are represented by a ring of eight granite boulders from Sweden each carved with the shape of a body embracing the stone. The artist is Antony Gormley better known as the creator of the Angel of the North.

Coincidence?

It says "of Man", but yes Law of Five mentioned it at the top of the previous page - but you're right there is an enormous amount of information to sift through and it keeps increasing Smile

Good question. It seems as if every bit of information that comes up intertwines with the the rest in several ways, but maybe it's just the connectedness of everything - sort of like the six degrees of separation Smile

I've been poking around about this 1970 thing, and here are two possibilities I've come up with so far:

1) 1970 is the year that Bertrand Russell died. He was, to quote this page:
Quote:
British philosopher, mathematician and Nobel laureate, who emphasised logical thinking instead of superstition. He realized that the Christian religion, as organized in the churches, "has been and still is the principle enemy of moral progress in the world."

From what I can tell, he has a bust at Red Lion Square - though I'm not positive about this part. You guys may want to check up on that bit a little more.

2) Col. Richard Gimbel died in 1970, as well. He has a large collection of publications, including quite a number by Thomas Paine, as evidenced by this page:
Quote:
The Richard Gimbel Collection is a heterogeneous mix of items connected only by the fact that they were all collected by Gimbel (1898-1970) and that most were written by, to, or about the revolutionary Paine. Of primary importance are the approximately sixty-five letters or manuscripts in Paine's own hand, including Paine's 1776 manuscript notes for Common Sense, his letter of January 10, 1781, in which he takes leave of his former commanding officer, Nathanael Greene, and his January 6, 1789 letter to Kitty Nicholson Few, in which he writes of his view of matrimony and other personal matters.

I definitely think the first possibility is more likely the correct one. But I thought I'd throw all my cards on the table so you smarter people can do something with the information.

Sir Richard Lodowick Edward Montagu Rees (bloomin heck!) also died in 1970 (born 1900). Rees was closley assoisiated with George Orwell.

Hi there.. new to the game and really loving it. So I researched the Paine and discovered the obvious, which as of yet had not been mentioned so I thought I would mention it. Sometimes the obvious passes you by if you look to hard. Paine wrote The Rights of Man in response to Edmund Burke about the French Revolution. Some things of note about this portrait. His eyes have something in them, like little white things, maybe an image enhancer. Also did anyone notice his portrait is done in the same style as the presidents faces on money? The style that is all lines so as to avoid simple reproduction? check out this webpage, its chincy but has the unmodified Paine photo. Woo I am excited.. gonna get some sleep now but this is great fun.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! That's awesome!

The picture of Thomas Paine. Author of The Rights of Man.

There's an arrow that says "of Man" and it points right. The right of man! Or he's to "The Right of Man."

My caffeen must not have kicked in yet if I'm still finding something like this funny at 11:00am.

Well here is something interesting...

Kathy Burke
Born in Islington, London 1964. She was encouraged to act at school and enrolled at the famous Anna Scher Theatre School in Islington. While there was spotted by film director Mai Zetterling who was looking for young actresses to appear in the film "Scrubbers". When Kathy was 22 she wrote her first play "Mr Thomas". She directed it at the "Old Red Lion" and Ray Winstone appeared in the title role. Dangerously Redheaded in BBC's hit comedy Gimme Gimme Gimme.

And finally before I trod off... check the file out I have. Streetmap.co.uk.. if you search for the old red lion, the map is nearly identical to the one beneath the poem.

I think Brimstoner nailed it. It only makes sense.

Just checking in again - some nice leads on the Burke of Islington and on Paine and London since I went to sleep.

I was also under the impression that the Old Red Lion Theatre was in Islington, just south of the Tube station (from http://maps.google.com), but the map from http://www.streetmap.co.uk seems to indicate and Old Red Lion on Holborn, just west of the Chancery Lane Tube stop (which is on the (red) Central line, and thus not obviously connected to the other Northern Line stations we have identified...) This area is indeed on the right-hand edge of map 2 (on the back of the notebook). Interestingly, this map also shows Red Lion Square which is just north of the Holborn tube stop...

Curiouser and curiouser, said Alice...
