[UPDATE] Favors for the Dead

Spacebass noticed that there are now favors!

The one in Chicago is at Bachelor's Grove Cemetery

Quote:
Chicago. One of my favorite towns. Mo Pikar was born there, did you know that? Plenty of good games going on in the graveyards there, but let me deal you into one in particular. It's called Bachelor's Grove, but ladies are more than welcome.

Here's your hand.

* Begin at the big white dead tree.
* From the tree, head north just a few paces, until you come to Moss that no longer grows.
* Now head west to the one stone that has remained unmoved. It shares a name with a famous inventor.
* From here, head northeast until you come to the grave of the most recently deceased in the grove.
* Go south until you reach the checkered base of a headstone that is now gone. (By the way, there's a famous picture taken of one of my pals here.)

Now connect the dots from the first grave to the last.

* SHOW ME you and any friends at the final stone.
* TELL ME what the dots reveal.

Sounds like a little scavenger hunt to occupy ourselves with? For more info (and some spoilers) about the "haunted" Bachelor's Grove cemetery see here

Is this Lucky's pal? Shocked

The Evergreens in New York:

Quote:
I knew a girl in Brooklyn once, her kiss would suck your socks up to your belly button. Spaghetti and red wine at her apartment, jazz on the record player (this was back when jazz was still fun). She had this chuckle that sounded like a silk dress coming off. Mm, mm….

This one's for her.

1. Stroll in from the Bushwick Ave. entrance and go about 250 yards, looking to your left. You'll come to a beautiful woman leaning on an anchor. Who of the four J's here lived longest? Take note of the year that person died.
2. Now head to your NE (be sure of your directions). As the crow flies, you'll be going about fifteen yards, but then again you're not a crow. Look for the angel and the ocean. Find the stringed instrument and take note of the year of death.
3. Now, heading back almost due west, you'll come upon a mausoleum with a feature befitting Ebenezer Scrooge. See if anyone's home, then look down to your left for the year in the stone. Take note of it.
4. Now, head back to the path, and turn SW. Turn NW at your first chance, then keep your eyes peeled for a lovely weathered angel atop an ornate base. This is the Christoffel family. One of them was a Sergeant in the 304 th Field Artillery. Good guy. Take note of the year he joined his dearly departed family.
5. Next, head NE until you reach the last, northeastern row of The Lawn. About 65 yards from the Christoffels, you'll find one who is always in trouble with the Lord. Note the year he left this earth.
6. Three stones away marks the place where the red ferns died. What year did the youngest shoot go?
7. It's time to head SE back to the road. Once there, go NNE for just 50 yards or so, until you meet some more of my kin (another white sheep in the family). Find the year he went to his doubtless just reward.

Now:

* SHOW ME you and any friends with the Angel and the Ocean.
* TELL ME the first of the 7 to die.

And some other small favors...

Quote:
Some kids never seem to feel loved. I guess maybe it was my fault. I don't know.

He wasn't much of a man, maybe, but he was my son. Find a grave that looks lonely, or lost, or unloved, and fix it up, would ya? In honor of my son.

Maybe he had a tough childhood. Maybe life never dealt him any cards. I don't give a good god damn. Find the grave of someone whose full name can be anagrammed into a curse on the bastard who killed my son. I'll see him in Hell.

If it wasn't for bad luck, some guys wouldn't have any luck at all. He was a putz, but not a bad putz. Show me the tombstone of someone whose full name can be perfectly anagrammed into a blessing for poor Vic Aldridge. What's the blessing?

It's the cemetery B & E. Cemeteries are loneliest at night. So come after dark--if it's allowed, of course. Paco and me would never want you to do something against the law. Bring at least one friend. Use flashlights to show me who you're keeping company.

I volunteer to take Vic's hat around Palm Beach County. If there are a few other People in the South Florida area maybe we could carpool down to Key West and take a picture of it at Daddy Hemmingway's house. With a six toed cat.

First one to finish wins only applies to the Places favors, right?

Because my girlfriend and I are planning a Columbus Day trip to the local cemetery for the People favors.

A little warning for anyone planning on doing the Chicago favor:

graveyards.com wrote:

WARNING: Do not go in or near Bachelor's Grove Cemetery at night. Do not go in or near Bachelor's Grove Cemetery at Halloween, or for several weeks before or after that date. You will be arrested and charged with trespassing.

The author of graveyards.com recommends that you don't go to Bachelor's Grove at all.

"Tick-chin creeps".

I sent in the blessing favor. Anagramming the name left me with this blessing for Victor:

"The vows I desire."

Not the best, but I think its passable.
Other blessing possibilities I fanagled with.

The desires I vow.
The vow is desire.
I desire the vows.

Amongst others.

"B & E" stands for "Breaking and Entering," by the way. Fair warning.

I've been blathering about it in IRC far too much to repeat it all here, but FourDSwissCheese and I drove alllllll the way down to Bachelor's Grove.

We were totally in the wrong place.

We walked about 4 or 5 miles.

In the wrong place.

However, we saw a bunch of deer, walked under some scary crackling power lines, and used a very fine port a potty with no LouMac in sight.

I know where to go now, I am very excited, and will try not to feel stupid and dumb until I start out again tomorrow morning.

(Many thanks to ThaJinx (Legion of Specters, yeah!!) and Mapmaker for their recon via phone and IRC. I wish we'd known more where we were, because Mapmaker totally had the right location. We were just very, very confused.)

I think the favors for the people that can be at any cemetery count regardless of when.

The first shows respect for the dead. It's a way to make one take a moment to think about those who have passed on before us.

As always be respectful, and take a small token of esteem for those who have gone before, be it a stone, a flower, a drawing, a small flag to leave at the grave of a veteran (sometimes the cemetery office may have small flags on sticks for your use).

I sent a picture of me with the hat for Pinzano.
And I put a nice autumn arrangment on a bare headstone for RobertBrown.
