Ah, so that's how Jane is "in game". I was wondering about that. On her blog, it just said that she's helping to fulfill Lucky's last request.

3. When the quest starts, designate a photojournalist, an audio recorder, a photographer/scanner, and a cartographer. Audio recorder records all of the instructions as they are read. Photographer makes a record of all of the pages of instructions and hints. I don't know what happened to the cards/photos from our quest, but I haven't seen them posted yet. Photojournalist records the answers to every piece of the quest in photos. Either of the tombstone or of the filled out instruction if the answer is inside a mausolem and the pic won't come out. get name, date, and whatever else might be interesting about each site. Cartographer has a map of the cemetery. I will try to get an aerial photo of the next site for someone to print out. note on there where each location was. This is the kind of interesting things that I would love to see from the other sites. I will try to put up a scan of my map of the site tomorrow.

The instruction cards were posted in the cypher thread. The "clue" photo scans haven't been posted yet though... they quality of the actual photos isn't that great and my scanner doesn't seem to enjoy them, so I'm going to try them at work today.

Really, really close. Wink I think that helped ariock pick up signal. DarkForge noticed their proximity, too.

Well... it's possible...

Granted... when he went by me earlier, the only thing I saw him fidgeting with was a memory card for his camera...

So, does anyone know what clues (if any) or anything were in those special decks of cards that were given out as prizes? I don't think anyone's ever mentioned...

query:

Were you given chips at the start to play with? Or were the only ones available whatever you picked up off of graves?

Our host that we met at the cemetery entrance gave everyone 10 chips to start with, and instructed us that there were chips placed randomly on graves that you could claim before the games started to increase your personal pot. I looked around, but I think they were all gone by the time I got there. She also handed out unopened, regular decks of cards to a few people. So before everyone could start playing, players found someone with a deck and that was their "table" they played at. We had about 5-6 couples playing with us.

The prize cards were a "crooked deck" with the cards literally crooked. All the cards were in numerical order in groups of suits, so we figured there weren't any clues within. We all got excited for a second when we noticed there was an extra ace of clubs at the end of the deck until we realized it was probably just a feature of the deck's crooked nature.

I guess you could bring a friend along if you want, but half the fun is pairing up with some random person. All my friends reacted the same way as they did a year ago when I told them how fun talking to an AI from the year 2552 through a payphone was. Smile So I showed up at the graveyard solo and as our "host" was handing out chips etc. some guy turned to me and asked me if I had a partner. I didn't, so I took up his offer and we played graveyard poker for hour. I found out he was a game programmer and he heard about this event in some karaoke club when he was in NY. There were close to a hundred people when things got started, so the whole social networking aspect of it can be interesting and pretty fun too.

Of course I played for the full hour while some other people here went on a seekrit mission halfway through the allotted gaming time. Smile

At the entrance to the cemetery, I was handed a program with a picture of Lucky on the front, instructions for Tombstone Hold 'Em inside, and a message from Lucky on the back; a piece of paper listing various "Graveyard Games" that were "inspired by Lionel "Lucky" Brown, posthumous founder of www.lastcallpoker.com"; a deck of playing cards that had "Good luck!" handwritten in marker on the package; and 10 poker chips with the original Last Call Poker logo on them. I posted pictures of these items on my flickr, as well as a few from the day--I sure wish I had taken more pictures.

Right after entering the cemetery, Ariock and I ran into Spacebass, who I was looking forward to meeting. Smile We all looked for chips on tombstones and Jokers (BTW, I confirmed with Mr. Brown's representative that a Joker is a tombstone that has your birthday only--your birth year is not necessary). Having already scouted out the cemetery, I wasn't looking all that hard. There were 7 Jokers for me and 4 for Ariock that we knew of, so we didn't feel the need to find more. Two of my jokers were right next to each other, which would have been great if we had USED them.

People kept showing up--ultimately there was around 100 people there. We were given instructions that the people with decks of cards would be the first dealers. It ended up that in our group, we only played one hand of poker before realizing it was past 2:30 and those of us with phone contacts had missed calls on our phones. My contact was Krystyn, who rocked. Unfortunately, we started too late and I was not being diligent in following her instructions to find the correct mausoleum.

We heard that the box had been found so we found the group of people who were following those instructions. There were a set of maps, with instructions and a picture that went with each one (SMG3er scanned and posted them in this thread). As Ariock pointed out, other people were still playing Tombstone Poker. I was on the phone most of the time with Krystyn, following the group around, trying to tell her where we were going and why. I was holding on to too many things, it was noisy and difficult to hear the instructions, let alone repeat them to Krystyn, so I am sure I sounded like an idiot (insert when do you NOT sound like an idiot joke here).

We ended up at the gravesite of Vincenzo Cirimele, who died the day after his seventh birthday. As per Lucky's instructions, we were to place 500 poker chips on the grave, as an offering, and then form a circle around the grave and hold hands. We placed 666 chips, some arranged in auspicious shapes, formed the hand holding circle and, as already stated, sang "Amazing Grace" because that is the song of ARGs, at least when I am involved in them. Wink

Also, as already mentioned, Ariock, with his digital radio, was the only person who managed to get a signal on 101.9. There was also an envelope that I think came from the box with instructions to open the envelope at sunset. At the Globe, where we went directly afterwards for liquid refreshments and everybody wins--nobody wins poker, the envelope was opened and the coded message that Ehsan ended up solving was inside.

My humble advice for future live event players:

Decide what you want to do--play Tombstone Hold 'Em or play the ARG. This is vital for winning one or solving the other because, unless your event is run differently from ours, you will not have time for both. Of course, you can do a little of each, if you are not interested in being the winner or the solver.

If you decide to play Poker--scope out the cemetery beforehand to look for Jokers--remember, the year is irrelevant--it just needs to be someone who died on your birthday.

If you decide to play the ARG--scope out the cemetery beforehand to familiarize yourself with it--print out an aerial photo of it from Google Earth. Get comfortable--stay awhile. Okay--not THAT long. Not YET anyway.

/me inserts joke.
/me poses sexily.
/me runs away.

Funny thing is, I felt so clever, calling up the cemetery to get the lot number for the dear, departed Roveres, only to get back on the phone with pita and/or DarkForge, and hear that the box had been found, yadda yadda. Ah well! It was fun to hear random things being said in the background. It really sounded like quite a crowd.

I felt a tiny bit useless on the online end, overall, but I am looking forward to this coming weekend, if I have another chance to help out with the Legion of Specters.

Heh Krystyn - i very politely called the cemetery too and asked if they had an online map. Because of this family history I am researching. Wink

Turns out they didn't. Wonder if they got very many odd phone call requests during the game?

Omigosh, I tried to be as absolutely polite as possible. I paused a few times to let him get out of the call, if needed. I so didn't want to waste his time, and I didn't want my excitement of the game to make him feel rushed.

It was like all the dormant etiquette rules rose to the surface and beat me about the head soundly during the entire phone call.

I wasn't as clever as you, though. I totally admitted that I was assisting some friends in the 'scavenger hunt thingy' going on there that day. Heh.

Even on the phone with Melissa during ilovebees I had a difficult time lying or roleplaying. I just told the truth as much as I could, and did the omission trick on the rest.

Krystyn, most of the people working at Cemeteries talk to people all the time about the cemetery. It isn't wasting anyone's time.

Most Cemeteries do have a basic map of where the sections and lots are. They just might not have them on line. If you have access to a fax machine they would probably fax a copy of the map to you.

(hmmm... that sounds like a good idea... /me wanders off to do some phone calling)
