Request for new topics for the player's tutorial

In chat today, Price asked me for a list of the topics that have not yet been covered in the tutorial. These are topics most recently requested in the last couple months plus a couple left over from the original list on the argn archive.

-Map Coordinates (Steve says he's working on this)
-Using Base 4,6,64, etc. to encrypt messages.
-Cryptograms (try as I might, I simply can't wrap my head around this concept)
-Modular DONE
-dtmf decoders
-Language translators
-Tips for googling

Feel free to add to this list if there is something you'd like to see someone tackle for the tutorial. If you write something for the tutorial, post it here or a link to it here. I'll capture it and add it to the tutorial. Review the topics already covered: http://www.unfiction.com/dev/tutorial/

Yes, TL. It's pretty much done. Having someone read it right now to see if it will be clear enough for the newest of newbies.

Diandra's wonderful Mod Tutorial is available on the Gamer's Handbook at http://www.unfiction.com/dev/tutorial/mod.html
Note that there is a link to a printable mod.doc to make it easier to do the exercises.
Many thanks to Diandra...excellent job, girlfriend.
Main tutorial page is here: http://www.unfiction.com/dev/tutorial/

You're most welcome, TL.

For those of you printing out the Word doc (which I highly recommend doing):

after opening in MS Word, click "View", then select "Print Layout" to be sure the tutorial formats correctly and prints the page numbers.

anyone got any tips on recognizing how a text has bee encrypted?

e.g Simple substitution, vigenere, base 64 etc etc.

Or is it just trial and error? Confused

I find it's a lot to just "feeling" it. After you've done it for a while, you can start to get some sense of what you're dealing with.

A ROT string will have much of the structure of regular english, and will tend to "look" better I find.

I can't tell the difference between a simple substitution and vigenere just by looking alone. If you take some time and really look into it, you won't find as many letter pairs as you would expect in a simple substitution, and find more 1/2/3 letter words then you're used to. The easiest way by far is to look at the letter distribution. A vigenere will have almost a flat letter distribution usually, while a simple substitution will have peaks around the "EATS" characters.

Base64 will contain a mix of letters, upper and lowercase letters, +, and / characters. It may also end in = characters, that's a dead giveaway that it's in Base64, but it's not required.

I was missing a basic code I don't know what it's called but in dutch its called "biggenrencode" (pigletpencode) It would look something like this:

I always thought of it as a classic. It can easily be edited into a picture like:

Not the solution of the crosword but the grid would be the real code.

The code is not called pigletpen for nothing. Its bases on #. Twisted Evil
