 		[UPDATE] Somebody broke the game
In case anyone was wondering, according to reports on the IRC channel, somebody broke [maybe broke into] the game. It looks like someone took the username that the ftp files and directory were originally owned by (before the PMs fixed the ownership slipup) and rooted one or more boxes. FTP and many of the sites seem to be offline now. Hopefully those in charge will fix things, secure the boxes a little better, and let us continue to play.

I hope it doesn't mean it is over. My guess is that they pulled the network plugs on everything, are currently securing the machines a little better, and will plug stuff back into the network as soon as they are done. I am not sure I have the quote anymore, but it was somebody in the #matrix IRC channel from the SomethingAwful forums. It is now unclear if someone brute-force hacked the username that was supposed to be unknown or if someone used the cassius login on a different FTP game site--but they were able to traverse directories, grab log files, and look at the /etc/passwd file (which, fortunately, had shadow passwords).

I would rather not post more than that, which might be too much info anyway. Let's just cross our fingers that things will be fixed and working shortly. The plot looks like it is just starting to take off, and I would hate for a script kiddie to have ruined the game for everyone.

I suspect the game will be back. We just have to be patient while they do what they have to do.

 		It was me!!!
I am the man who broke the matrix (sort of). All I did was use the aquapolis login over at meta's ftp. Obviously, if I did "break the game", its the pm's fault for leaving such an open door. I mean, I cant believe nobody tried it before I did. Maybe it even worked for the other sites, not just metacortech and aquapolis. But, yes, it is entirely my fault the game is down right now (grins from ear to ear). You are all welcome Laughing

Games like these evolves with us.

If something did break ( unintentially ) and something was found out. They could easily just change things, like caesar could say, i knew people were watching so I placed redherrings in the directorys.. look at this clue for the "real" info.
Or Stone ( the security guru ((if he's not fired )) ) could say there has been a breach in security, please change your passwords etc and the "secret" stuff was secure on another server.
So if someone has broken in and has found stuff and not letting on, dont hold a grain of salt to it because it can easily evolve into anything. It's all in the PM's hands and I'm sure they are clever enough to entwine this into the game ( if it's not already a part of it ).

Yeah, hey thanks, buddy. You're a real player. You're probably an internet pirate as well aren't you. You like to dl movies a year before they're out and then spoil it for everyone else (like with "Return of the King"). No doubt you already have "Revolutions" on your computer.

But like someone else said, some good will come of this. They'll just make the game harder. So don't break your self righteous arm patting your back. You aint done nothin' to the game.
