[SOLVED] Bellefontaine Small Favor

It was a sad, overcast day with constant hints of rain. Lots of gold and maroon leaves on the ground.
Named for the old Fort Bellefontaine (pronounced by the locals as "bell fountain"), it was established in 1849.

A lovely cemetery employee, Jeanie, accompanied me on this quest.
Such a sad old place where not many come back to visit. Years of history to discover. So many mausoleums that are million dollar shrines to the departed. So many markers that are worn away to the point of anonymity.

Quote:
The gateway city, and in it, another kind of gateway, from one world to another…

Off in the northern corner lies half of a famous duo of explorers, so it'd probably be appropriate to give you a little navigational aid to get you started: 38° 41' 54.48" N, 90° 13' 46.69" W. Find the mountain lion who needs dental work.

Gen Wm Clark died in 1838 (famed explorer with many many descendents)

Quote:
Now, beginning on the road to the east of this marker, follow the road south until you arrive at the 4 th intersection. Now, diagonally to your left, you'll see a broken down cannon in a shroud belonging to a Dragoon.

Gen Richard Mason died 1950 (did he know that his widow would marry Gen Buell? His crypt is next to Gen Mason, with Margaret Hunter Mason Buell buried between them)

Quote:
Westward on the road to the north of the cannon, always westward, until the road turns south again. Once you head south, continue to the first intersection. In the southwest corner, you'll find Sadie Waters asleep for an unknown time at the foot of an obelisk.

Who was Sadie? Was she Sarah's daughter? Her lovely likeness immortalized above the grave (see attached photo).

Quote:
East of Sadie, return to the road. Head south, then turn left, then right, then left, then straight, then stop at the crossroads. Head into the plot on the far left. At the base of a large tree, you'll see another obelisk, this time for Thomas Benton.

Sen Thomas Benton died in 1858 (nicknamed "Old Bullion"). First Missouri Senator, serving for 30 years.

Quote:
Find the road East of Benton's spire. Turn south, then follow the path, turning left at the Y, then straight through the crossroads, then right at the T, then to the crossroads, where you will stop. Almost directly to the east lies another obelisk, that of a genius, erected by his associates.

William S Burroughs died in 1898, at the age of 28 he perfected the mechanical calculator (and grandfather of the pulp author, William S. Bourroughs).

Quote:
Now south further, following the road along the lake. Continue straight through the crossroads at the SE corner of the lake, and though the road twists and turns, follow it through the following two crossroads until you reach a third. There, on the far left corner, prepare to be stunned. This is the Shadow Box Girl, the lovely Italian behind a pane of glass, who never returned the love of the man who now forever lies at her feet.

During a trip to Italy, Herman Luyties fell in love with a scupture's model. She declined his proposal (made more interesting in that he was already married at the time). He commissioned this 8-ft marble statue, shipped it to St Louis, and displayed it in his home. Eventually he had it placed in the family buriel plot. He died in 1921 but is found alone in the large area because his wife put the rest of the family in a different plot down the road.

Quote:
Finally, continue along the road you traveled, to the next crossroads, where you will turn left. Head north on this path, then make a hard right to head southeast, until you come to the circular Mausoleum of my distant kin, virtually in front of you.

Shoe manufacturer AD Brown died in 1913 (of the Hamilton-Brown Shoe Company)

Didn't Burroughs found a company that later became part of Honeywell? (So he's a tech god too?)

It's a pleasure to play with someone who knows their way around the graveyard. You've helped me tell my story and made this place more worthwhile.

You'll be getting a little something from me to show others that you're a Can-Do sort. Pleasure playing with you.

Keep up the good work-

The Dealer
