[META] - Finding names

After today's massive update I was convinced, mostly from the dates on the linked information, that we missed a lot on Saturday. Also, the convo in the first poker game with Polaris-- where I had no idea what he was talking about until he pretty much spelled it out for us -- was another big hint.

I went back through the updates try to figure out what we could have missed.

We had the image from Lucky's black book which gave us Franz Mueller. We all tried that name and variations on it. But I didn't think about him being a priest.

Looking at the text from Otto Grif "stomach contents" I found:

Quote:
One of the boys saw Otto. "Father!" he hissed.

Father... Mueller..... by the Cathedral.....

/me sobs softly.

This is the second time that the use of a plain English word has fooled me. I will try to be more vigilant! Finding these names is not a simple task at all.

I know! The thing is, and it really makes me appreciate the work the PMs are doing and the patience they have, they didn't beat us over the head with the trigger that led us to Father Mueller.

*swoon* A game where the PMs have a plan and don't mind letting us believe that we are still pulling some of the strings? Heaven!

I know jamesi and others appreciate that the PMs made us wait for the information about Father Mueller and the avalanche of cards that followed from it. I can see that point as well. But I found it made the day very long and confusing. And we lost a phone call which had to posted as an audio instead.

I know these PMs know what they are doing. It just seems that many people are lost on the story or have given up even trying to catch up and follow along!

Is it just me or does there seem to be a lot more holes/less continuity in the story than there was in ILB? At a glance, there seems to be so many characters involved in completely separate stories and the somewhat random choices in which characters have cards and which don't. Especially frustrating are the dead-end characters that haven't gone anywhere else - hikerd00d, lothar barbel, etc.

Again, it could be just me but the future storyline in ILB was in my opinion more coherent (I really enjoyed the 1945 story b/c it was mostly coherent but the strange decision to not give martin/maria halder a card bugs me). It could also be hindsight being 20/20.

Also, there's not a lot of "interpretation" to be applied to this story - unlike the spider/melissa/queen storyline which required a lot of spec and interpretation b/c of the strange presentation.

*shrug* Look forward to seeing where we go now and I'm having lots of fun and 4orty2wo definitely is a AAA ARG design group so don't get me wrong. Smile Just a little meta-review.

Coincidentally, I was recently chatting (in a PM) with someone else about this very issue. And we all know how much I love to quote myself, so:

Fortunately, I'm still enjoying the underlying story-- I mean, stories-- I mean, trying to figure out the stor-- oh, heck with it. You know what I mean. And as confusing as yesterday was (particularly considering that I, like an idiot, figured we had found pretty much all there was to find by around 3:00 p.m. PST and went off to do some actual work, thus missing EVERY SINGLE DAMN THING THAT HAPPENED with Mueller, Svetlana, Reed, the train, the tournaments, etc.), I've got a pretty good grasp on the 1945 story now, and I like it.

One major advantage that the 1945 story has over the 2005 story is the ability to focus on and develop the characters. Because of the nature of the game -- where three or four new characters must be introduced at every update -- it can be difficult to find anyone with whom to empathize. Obviously Lucy is the "star" of the story, but this is one heck of a huge supporting cast. 1945 is much simpler, both because there are fewer major characters and because the entire story essentially played out within a single week.

That's enough rambling for now. I'm still caught up in the story -- sure, not to the extent we were during ILB at its height, but then again LCP hasn't even been around for one month yet. I have a bit of faith left. Let's see what happens next.

P.S. Regarding Martin/Maria -- it is entirely possible that your sentence would be equally accurate even with the insertion of the word "yet." Mr. Green

(Alternately, it is possible that we've missed something yet again, and that the card is out there somewhere, like fathermueller and johnwhitecloud were last week. Yike.)

I definitely agree on the "yet" - maybe we should try the names: cartoonist, genuisartist, etc. Smile (I didn't but I might).

I think another difference between ILB and LCP is the different character of the dialog between us and Lucky. ILB, primarily through the princess, allowed a very direct sense of conversational dialog -- and what we said and did mattered. LCP is more like we're a bunch of kids gathered around to hear Grandpa Lucky tell us a story. Smile

If I could make a Tombstone Hold 'Em game, I might feel differently but, as much as I enjoy the Live Events, unlike the balloon pics and such, it doesn't feel like we're accomplishing anything. The poker, the small favors, etc all seem like busy work instead of an integral part of the story line.

But, I applaud the efforts of the PMs to create things that allow _everyone_ to be involved... Being in a small university town in Mississippi, there were never any phone calls in ILB here, and I'm not holding my breath for a cemetery-specific favor either. Razz But the small favors and the poker games let me into the game in a way that ILB didn't. But at the same time I feel less part of the story for multiple reasons: less coherence, less interactivity, less opportunity for wild spec.

Note: I am absolutely not just complaining. I am LOVING LCP. And I loved ILB. They are both well worth my time. And LCP is setting the bar in a number of ways... but it also has some, relatively minor, flaws.
