archetypes

I haven't caught up yet completely with 1929 - still trying to understand 2005 - but I think it would help if we listed the characters and the archetype they match. That way we should know what sort of person we are looking for.

Here is what I have so far. They could be wrong. So please post what it should be..

Preacher - Armageddon Jones
Gambler - Jake Guzik
Banker- Al Capone?? or who owns the 4 dueces??
Half-Breed- ??
Drunk - Mikey Ross
Kid - Peter Schwimmer?
Sheriff - Robert Richardson or Uncle Seamus
Killer - Jack McGurn (machinegun - yes the nick was a hint)

I think the Banker is going to turn out to be the commodities broker with whom Jack "Machine Gun" McGurn has something going, according to Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik's blabbing during the second poker game. Maybe that's this Strauss person; maybe not.

(Also, I think Jake owns the Four Deuces, since Mickey Ross says that Jake's the one who hired Anita DeFazio.)

I don't know if the banker is a commodities broker, or if it's just what Jack wants to be, or both, but owing someone 70K certainly puts your short and curlies firmly in their grasp.

Re ownership of the Four Deuces - these are real places, guys, where Al Capone really ran things, and for example McGurn is also real. I am sure there are fictional characters here too, but google is our friend to figure it out. Two of Al's bases of operations were the Four Deuces and the Hotel Metropole. Ownership, I think, is not relevant if the mob wants to set up shop.

Quote:
Directly under Capone on the organizational flow chart was his good friend and business manager, Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik. For liaison with the Unione Siciliane, there was Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti. His departmental chieftains included, for bootlegging operations, Capone's brother Ralph (nicknamed "Bottles") and his cousin, Charlie Fischetti; for brothels, Mike de Pike Heitler; and for gambling, Frank Pope. Farther down on the chart were Capone's musclemen: Jim Belcastro, the bomber of breweries; Phil D'Andrea, the sharpshooting bodyguard; and Samuel Hunt, alias "Golf Bag," so-called for the luggage in which he preferred to carry his shotgun. (Golf Bag's first intended victim survived the buckshot, Kobler notes, and was thereafter known as "Hunt's hole in one.") Other torpedoes of importance included Anthony Accardo (alias Joe Batters), Sam Giancana, Paul "The Waiter" Ricca, Murray "The Camel" Humphreys, and Jack "Machine Gun" McGurn, whose real name was DeMora and to whom police over the years attributed no fewer than twenty-two murders.

from: http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/1979/2/1979_2_82.shtml

Quote:
Capone had headquarters in Chicago proper in the Four Deuces at 2222 S. Wabash, the Metropole Hotel at 2300 S. Michigan Avenue, and the Lexington Hotel at 2135 S. Michigan Avenue.

Definitely a good idea. Would be good to post the one for 1945 in this thread too.

Anyhow, I think the updated list for 1929 is:

Preacher - Armageddon Jones
Gambler - Jake Guzik
Banker- Palmer Strauss
Half-Breed- Anita DeFazio
Drunk - Mikey Ross
Kid - Peter Schwimmer
Sheriff - Robert Richardson
Killer - Jack McGurn

I'm not 100% sure about Guzik, Ross and McGurn.

Our set of 8 cards for 1929 is now complete.

Archetypes on the Wiki

And still no card for Martin..

[spec]
I fear we missed something, though not something that would hold up the game. Thus, no help from the PMs on the card for Martin.

I'd reverse these two. Mickey is "playing cards a little" when we first meet him, and he is playing in a poker game when Richardson finally shoots him. Jake, on the other hand, can't keep his mouth shut during the poker games. Plus he runs a bar.

Just MHO.

I don't think there will be a card for Martin, only maybe a 2005 one.

We already have 8 cards for 1945. I don't think we're going to get any more than 8 cards from the past each week.
Jerry Monteverde could be the kid. He is young enough, and seems quite naive regarding his 'relationship' with Mitzi.
Martin/Maria Halder seems a red herring to me.
(and did anyone other than Lucy start playing poker so young?)

Mmmm, no, I disagree. I can't get to LCP ATM, but when Jake first mentions Mickey he says something along the lines of: "Mickey ordered a bottle of scotch"
Then in Anita's "accordion" piece we see: " Mr. Mickey Ross was sitting by himself, which was good. There was a half bottle of whiskey still on the table in front of him, which was also good. She wanted Mr. Mickey Ross to be drunk enough to talk but sober enough to keep his hands to himself. "

Drinking alone == a drunk.
[edited to add]
Jack's two links are:" Deal me in" and "Let's play"

Reading the text with those two links on Jake's page:

Quote:

The screams from upstairs turned to sobs, and a few minutes later Mickey Ross came in. "Hey, boys," he said brightly."Deal me in!"

So that one, which you attribute to Jake, is actually said by Mickey Ross.

The second:
Quote:
Mickey called down for another bottle of scotch, put it on Machine Gun's tab and squeezed the waitresses' ass when she brought it up. "Leave her alone," Jake said. " Let's play."

is Jake getting Mickey's greasy nasty hands off of a waitress's ass, and actually IS Jake asking that they just play the game.

If you ask me, neither one of them is fantastic for either the Drunk or the Gambler. I think SickoWanker and Bully'sSideKick work best Razz

Weephun has been insanely busy with auctions and other competitions and a 3rd baby and whatnot. I'm about 2 weeks behind on the updates now. All this should relax (well, except the 3rd baby) in the next week or so and I'll be back. Though I think somebody else should really "pull a weephun" this time around. I'd hate to hog ALL the glory. And in "I heard about your accident," Guzik nurses a glass of seltzer water all evneing while Anita sips champagne. Yeah, it looks like Ross may be the better candidate for both the Drunk and the Gambler.

[WILDSPEC]Actually... Guzik's the accountant. So what if he's really the Banker, and Palmer Strauss is really the Gambler? Maybe that's why he owes McGurn all that money?[/WILDSPEC]

Naah. I'm gonna go with ScarpeGrosse on this one. Mr. Green
