trail

of course then there are people like me who just like to see the puzzles and maybe practice by learning how they are solved. Happily there are lots of puzzles around, so I can live without this trail. I did look at the first few pages and I think the idea of teaching people how to solve puzzles is excellent and works well. I know many of the puzzle people here know that basic stuff, but I didn't when I first started to play ARGs. I think any beginner might want to look at the first series of puzzles -- they have hints and explanations.

Although I still am not sure why spoilers of solves aren't ok here or are they? (Ok, I admit i didn't pay careful attention and I have a headache from trying to learn how to play poker last night. )

still this is good progress and resolution, right?

And like I said, anyone who wants to tackle the Silver elucidate card is more than welcome. Smile

@BigBlizz
Thank you for your - very long! - reply...I felt a bit strange about all of this.
I can understand that getting answers gets easier by the minute if spoilers are posted, but there are some points I'd have to say:
a) first of all, getting the final answers through a search engine isn't that accidental as you make it sound...it's one thing if it destroys the complete google procedure, but another if the availability of spoilers is tempting some people who otherwise wouldn't be...that's entirely their own responsibility...but I guess some of the spoilers slip through the cracks and it can become a problem...
b) so far I can't find any of the spoilers here on Google even when I type "clever waste of time level x"...I guess they need time to arrive at the search bots, but I don't really know much about the whole process
c) the comments made by members of CWOT were unprofessional and came across with the arrogant we-won't-even-begin-to-discuss-this-with-losers-like-you attitude...personally, I couldn't quite understand the attitude of some members - I won't get to name-calling - and I still think they are...well, I'm not saying Razz they know about their issues, I'm sure...none of this is your fault, of course, because they are as you already said individuals and responsible for what they said

Now, I certainly don't want to keep the war going by mentioning all of this again. To the contrary...I'm glad to see that this has been resolved. I'm still playing, anyway. Wink I gave it some time and was optimistic that you would say something. Or perhaps I'm just addicted... Rolling Eyes

Not to miss the bandwagon, let me just throw in my support for the "post answer once in spoiler tags and leave it" method. Infinitely less frustrating than the "send hundreds of PMs to the only person that's solved it" method. The answer is there if you want it but you don't have to read it if you don't want to.

Also, Google results all come with a title. In none of these headings will you find a spoiler from the unforums, because in our case, our Google results headers are our Forum Thread Topics. Usually entitled "View Topic......".

I would merely suggest your readers just ignore any google results entitled "View Topic - x". Simple.

Please see my PM on this. The edits were to remove any contentious postings I may have made (which did get me into some hot water).

I'll be popping in now and then to see how people are doing. There will be no more spoilers from me. I believe that this should be acceptable to CU and the other mods on CWOT so long as I don't decrease the fun level they have worked so hard to achieve in the game.

I played until about level 12 checking my answers in the spoilers each time. Then I saw the source code say "personally I'd use CS but that's just me" and the title "alt_ctrl_i"

I tried a few things but no go. So I looked at a spoiler, which obviously gave me the wrong answer because I get the whole mean-spirited "if you're one of THOSE people" blahblahblah

Yes, I admit it, I'm one of those OTHER people who just recently got interested in online puzzles and ARGs. Translation: I have no idea how most of this stuff is done. I used to program in BASIC, Pascal, Machine code and COBOL but I don't know all the whiz-bang stuff that can be done these days. So I'm looking at the source code thinking "what the hell is 'CS'? what am I supposed to do with THIS?"

Well if no one can tell me, I'll never learn it. So yeah, I'm one of those "pathetic" people who can't solve some of this on my own because I wasn't BORN knowing all these little tricks. I can do integral and differential calculus, write a 1000 page thesis about the sociological impact of flooding in a hunter-gatherer tribe in Africa, clean behind a toilet until it's antiseptic, read 500 pages in one night - standing up, paint a picture, play guitar violin and drums as well as read music, write a 75 page play based on my life after running away from home at 15, raise three kids - one with Autism - fight a two year long lawsuit and win with only about $2000 and i can cook a ten course meal for 20 people, get my EQ2, WOW, CoH and GW characters past level 40...

But oh, hey I'm pathetic because I don't understand how to solve your puzzle without help. Heck I don't even know what your little oblique clues mean because I'm old old old and pitiful and don't know about every shiney little amazing thing this japanese wonder-box can do.

Forget this trail... and I seriously hope most other ARGs aren't anything like that... I've got plenty of other things to tackle in my life that I haven't tried yet and i'm pretty sure most of those hobbies don't involve being told I'm pathetic just because I'm starting out.

Don't be put down by that message- it's just a game. And no, it's not an ARG because they don't provide you with storyline or context.

I followed the outdated spoiler as well and though I know how the puzzle works in theory I have not found the right answer yet. To get some hints, rollover the spoiler:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are 3 hints in the source. "CS", "Ctrl-Alt-I", and "X-If". X-If stands for Exif (google it). Ctrl-Alt-I is obviously some key combination and "CS"? Well, he's referring to Photoshop CS, which apparently everybody has on his PC (yay for advocating software piracy..grrr). I can't afford Photoshop so I am guessing that when you load that jpg into Photoshop, hit Ctrl-Alt-I you will see the hidden Exif data.
I tried that with the free Irfanview program, but all the contained passwords lead to blank pages.

EDIT: Okay, using a hex editor like "WinHex" did the trick..

True, it is just a game - aka diversion, pasttime, pleasurable time-waster etc

If I do not get entertainment, knowledge or relaxation out of a game, i'm not going to play, that's all.

I also had a minor flame-war with one of the less-polite makers of this trail. I sent him the exact same thing I posted above and received a lot of vitriol which actually cracked me up and my replies were much softer.
In fact, his two emails were much more entertaining than the puzzle itself.
Mostly though, after seeing the attitude of the people who make it, I felt pretty sure I am not interested in mingling in any kind of group like they are garnering. Not my type of people, not my style of play. I'm a group-player and I'm not interested in competing at all, for anything. I misjudged this trail and now I know better, that's all.

Can someone help me with T5? I am at the part with
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
eerapapskp and the best anagram I have come up with is speak paper round end. Some other words I found are:

Are any of those part of it or close?

Hi smibbo! Sorry you had a bad experience with this, but I'd just like to point out that this is not an ARG (which is why it's in the Timewasters forum). Puzzle trails share some similarities to ARGs, but basically a puzzle trail is only a fraction of what an ARG is -- ARGs not only (usually) have puzzles, but they are also a form of interactive storytelling (and indeed, generally it is the story and not the puzzles that are the primary focus of the ARG).

The way each community of players that forms for an ARG interacts with one another and the story tends to be specific to the game, but in general, ARG communities are highly collaborative and most of us try to be welcoming and helpful to newbies.

So please don't let a bad experience with a puzzle trail turn you off to ARGs. (For the record, most makers (and, for that matter, most players) of puzzle trails are a lot nicer than, I gather, are the CWoT people, as well.)
