[SPEC] Yr

This is nothing but spec, take it with a dose of speccity-spec-spec.

All of the Lucy-Devon emails have been worded in a specific way. Note in the the email, all words are properly capitalized and spelled correctly, with no abbreviated words, bar "yr"

"yr", supposedly abbreviating "your", has been present in all emails.

You're A Squid
-signed yr sister the criminal case

buckets of snot
-Yr crybaby sister

Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World
-Just think of me as yr sister the nun. (this was different, it was in the body of the message, the others being in the "signature" of sorts)
-yr sister the one day at a time girl

Talking to the alien
-Yr. Sister in Denial

Enter spec:
1) yr is not a common abbreviation for your. The most common would be "ur".

2) Note the misuse of the abbreviation in the last email. The period behind the Yr is misplaced. It would be read "Your. Sister in Denial". I doubt the great minds of LCP would accidently screw up on punctuation.

3) yr is used once in the body of the 3rd email. However, in the other emails, "Your" is used like a regular word.

EX:
-there wasn't even a name for wanting to date your sister.
Amongst others.

Could YR possibly mean something else?

Spec away.

Woah, slow down...I beg to differ.
In all of the e-mails I've seen so far there are several words capitalized which shouldn't be and I was always wondering what is up with that. Is Lucy just sloppy? Is it a certain trademark of hers?
Most of the time the e-mails provide no obvious clues and don't seem to be useful aside from the fact that they signalise a new update.

Either there is something useful about these e-mails in themselves or they are supposed to build up to some sort of shocking - or not so shocking - twist or climax. Or just the update reminder, but that strikes me as too boring for LCP. Razz

Edit: Ok, I checked back on it and I think I know why she capitalises some words. She uses caps whenever she wants to either
a) emphasize on something like "because it's Warm Here"
b) use the equivalent of those air-quotation-marks you sometimes use, like, you know, gesturing with your fingers, uh...I don't know how to describe it...there was a funny running-gag about this in a Friends episode (way to be vague Laughing)...basically it's like in "I kept thinking of this woman I, uh, Met in a Bar.", where "Met" is the thing you emphasize on
c) she uses the words as an expression like in the "Night in Jail"

c) is common, but a) and b) are quite unusual. I don't know about you, but for a) I'd use all-caps and in the case of b) quotation marks.
Which means, Lucy got her very own style and writing "yr" for the over-used "ur" doesn't seem all that strange to me any more. Razz

Until Lucy starts speaking in tongues mid-mail, I am pretty sure this is just her style of writing. imo.

I hate to be barking up this tree again, but today's update revealed another yr.

http://www.lastcallpoker.com/user/robertrichardson/gra_planningtoget/

This time by Mr. Capone himself.

And again, used improperly.

"Yr. Brother,"

Seems like Capone and Lucy have similar writing styles. Razz And remember, back in the 1920's they didnt have Instant Messaging. Very Happy

Any more plausible than before? Spec away.

I suspect it's a writing style...

"Yr is an abbreviation for "your" started by the Beat Poets. Sometimes it is clearly an abbreviation, complete with a period ("yr.") and sometimes it looks suspiciously like the abbreviation for "year." Sonic Youth used this abbreviation for a number of their titles."

...but that said, I thought it was interesting that Lucy and Al share this affectation... coincidence?

Re: [SPEC] Yr

Perhaps Capone used "Yr" because [META]the PMs didn't want us barking up the wrong tree about Lucy being the ooooooonly person in the whoooooole world who uses that abbreviation in correspondence.[/META]

Neither the Beat Poets nor Sonic Youth were around back in 1929 though Razz

Unless they used some sort of extreme time machine, in which case, this game just got a whole lot cooler.

For some reason, I seriously doubt that in the history of the written english language, that the Beat Poets were the first EVARZ to use Yr. for "Your" in a missive. Sorry, I tend to agree with Shad0 that the likelyhood of this meaning anything than "you're a paranoid schizo, but thanks for playing" is HIGHLY unlikely. I'm being tough, but you know what I mean. I like the spec idea, but the premise is more than shaky.
